Limitations. Boundaries. Moderation in all things. Those words are just not part of the holidays. So when shopping till you drop is the only option, you need some way to cope. Our Department of Holiday Stress Relief has been busy coming up with something easy and painless.

Here's a little something that can help you make it through the holidays.

Nature's Stress-Buster: Magnesium
1 of 8
I'd like to introduce you to magnesium, the fourth most abundant mineral in your body. Magnesium is the most critical mineral for coping with stress.

That's right. Number one for helping you handle stress.

With the adrenaline-fueled rush of shopping and partying, stress levels go up, up and away. Taking a little magnesium (or eating magnesium-rich foods could help bring stress down to a manageable level, and even let you enjoy the holidays more.

Magnisium supplements also have a laxative effect. They can also affect the absorption of certain drugs, like CellCept.

I take lots of opportunities to bring up cannabis because it is one of the most useful plants on Earth, yet is so unjustly disrespected by this (ever so evil) industrial society. Magnesisum is surely healthy but "natures chill pill"? If cannabis were legal in the US, it would be a much more healthy country: Netherlands have 85% fewer hard drug overdoses than the US (according to a recent NatGeo piece on the plant), largely because people can use pot legally; as for magnesium, yes yes, it's healthy, but for people to turn to that in seek of stress-reduction is 'flat out' perverse given the multiple health (& industrial) benefits of cannabis. It's worth mentioning frequently because it's very unethical for it to be illegal.

Is also a powerful psychoactive drug that causes structural damage to the dendrites in the brain resulting in short term memory loss. To the degree that your short term memory is damaged your ability to learn is damaged because you have to make a short term memory to make a long term memory an thus ability to learn is damaged. It is additive. and legalizing it would result in more DUII deaths. Case in point the woman smoking marijuana that killled 8 bicyclists.this week. The notion that it is harmless and benificial herb in nonsense. The same could be said of heroin and cocaine. Time spent in marijuana high is time not spent with family. I have been a chemical dependency couselor for 30 years and I know of what I speak.MM LCSW Now I expect all those who love their marijuan to tell me I am wrong.

I agree that magnesium is a critical nutrient that usually requires supplementation in a stressful environment. The following are excerpts from the book "The Wellness Project" which devotes several sections to magnesium because of its importance.

Body magnesium levels are rarely tested by any MD. Blood tests are mostly useless. The only test I consider useful is an intracellular tissue analysis. For information, Google: exatest.

Many of the food sources of magnesium listed in the article are extremely high in phytates, which bind to minerals, including magnesium, making them unavailable to the body. See:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/10069480

http://www.westonaprice.org/food-features/1893-living-with-phytic-acid.html

Calcium competes with magnesium, so I would avoid any supplement where the ratio of calcium to magnesium is greater than 2. In my opinion, taking a calcium supplement without magnesium is a very bad idea, since magnesium improves calcium absorption. See:

http://www.mgwater.com/calmagab.shtml

For magnesium supplementation that provides rapid absorption without gastric issues, apply magnesium chloride or magnesium hydroxide (an excellent deodorant) to the skin. For more information, Google: magnesium oil.

Thanks for this excellent information. I have been supplementing with magnesium for quite some time now. If everyone would be aware of our chronic need for this mineral and take action, I believe the health of our country would dramatically improve. Based on personal experience, I believe the product below provides the best absorption:

This is very, very helpful. I do all the 'right' things. . .semi-veggie, avoid flour, sugar, dairy, mat-based yoga and Pilates. . .an EKG this week indicates damage to heart beyond what high blood pressure will do. . .up for the task, but this will certainly help with powerful and debilitating headaches. Thanks.

Anybody know what form 'chelated magnesium' is? It says "from magnesium oxide, amino acid chelate" on the label. I might need a different form.....????

Why is the form you are taking giving you the runs?
09:06 PM on 12/03/2010
It refers to the chemical compound containing the element magnesium. In this case magnesium oxide has been allowed to react with amino acids. The acids took the magnesium atoms from the magnesium oxide and combined with them to form new coumpounds. It is believed that these compounds are more easily absorbed by the body than the magnesium oxide.

That was great. I agree. Many of my patients are magnesium deficient, and I find it is a common cause of muscle tension, spasms, foot and leg cramps, and constipation. I find patients tolerate magnesium glycinate the best. Many of them get the best results with 200-400 mg per day. It is fairly difficult for most people with Standard American Diet, ie. SAD, to keep their levels up without supplementation. They are overstimulated by constant texting, cell phone use, electronic games, work, family issues, lack of exercise, interrupted sleep patterns, too much caffiene, and they eat far too few servings of vegetables per day to get enought magnesium from their diets to cover their needs.

Magnesium works wonders for me to relax, but I don't take it often because it gives me diarrhea. I've heard taking vitamin D with it will counteract that effect. Have you had any experience with teaming it up with vitamin D?
