Romney's Independence Day Advice: Buy Foreign

Posted: 07/02/2012 8:25 am

America commemorates its Independence Day this week with food, festivity and fireworks. To supply these events, Mitt Romney recommends: Buy foreign.

Americans naturally think the patriotic choice would be to buy American. But for Romney, capitalism trumps patriotism. Romney goes where the money is. He made big bucks as CEO of Bain Capital by investing in a series of companies that specialized in shipping American jobs off shore. For him, it's fine to kill an American job as long as he can make a buck on it.

Americans must decide. Do they pledge allegiance to money-grubbing? Or do they pledge allegiance to the United States of America? If it's the United States, then on this Independence Day, demonstrate patriotic pride by deliberately buying American. Search for that "Made in USA" label. Pick the product that will create American jobs, the one that is an investment in an American company and the American economy.

Romney's decisions over his business and political career clearly illustrate that for him the most important symbol isn't the American flag. It's the almighty dollar. As the CEO of Bain Capital, he could have invested in any sort of company. He chose several that helped corporations move or expand off shore. In fact, Romney was, as the Washington Post put it, a pioneer in this area.

Romney took that "buy foreign" philosophy with him to the Massachusetts governor's mansion. There he specifically permitted state contractors to move work overseas. He vetoed legislation to forbid the practice. Romney thwarted lawmakers' attempt to stop a contractor from using state tax dollars to move work from America to India and Bangladesh. As a result, unemployed Massachusetts residents who called the state government for information on food stamps got connected to foreign nationals performing jobs that unemployed Americans could have had.

Some American CEOs deliberately do the opposite of Romney. They find ways to buy American. Iconic American companies Starbucks and Google are examples. Last week, Google released a wireless home media player, the Nexus Q, that is made in America. The New York Times said "the most intriguing feature" of the player is the inscription on the bottom: "Designed and Manufactured in the U.S.A." It's fascinating, the Times explained, because:

It has become accepted wisdom that consumer electronics products can no longer be made in the United States.

Google, always an innovator, decided that accepted wasn't wise. Starbucks did too.

Starbucks stopped buying its mugs overseas. It located a tiny pottery manufacturer in Ohio and gave the business to that firm -- American Mug and Stein Co. As a result, American Mug added eight workers. That's how American jobs are created: one American Mug at a time.

The mugs are part of Starbucks' Indivisible project. The sale of Indivisible merchandise supports the Starbucks "Create Jobs for USA Fund," which helps small businesses.

Similarly, last month, Starbucks decided to build a factory in Augusta, Ga., to make its Via instant coffee and ingredients for its Frappuccino drinks. That will create 140 American jobs.

Later this month, Congress is scheduled to vote on two measures that would, like Starbucks and Google, create American jobs. One is the Bring Jobs Home Act, which would end tax loopholes that, inexplicably, reward companies for firing Americans and moving their jobs overseas. At the same time, the Bring Jobs Home Act would give tax credits to companies that shift work from overseas back to the United States.

The other measure is the United States Call Center Worker and Consumer Protection Act. It would prohibit federal grants and tax breaks to companies that send call center jobs overseas. It also would require those firms to tell customers where their calls are being directed and provide the option of a U.S. call center. This would prevent companies from getting millions in tax subsidies based on promises of U.S. call center employment that are quickly broken when the centers lay off the American workers and move their jobs overseas.

Romney does not approve of the Bring Jobs Home Act. That's clear from the pledge he signed with Washington lobbyist Grover Norquist to protect tax loopholes. In fact, Romney would go further to encourage companies to offshore manufacturing and jobs. He promised to eliminate all taxes on foreign profits.

But then, Romney's a quarter billionaire who owns a $100,000 horse and installed a car elevator in one of his mansions. To him, it's all about profit and not at all about patriotism.

To working people, however, the Bring Jobs Home Act and the Call Center Act make sense. Working Americans don't want to pay corporations to move jobs overseas. American taxpayers don't want to subsidize call centers that quickly close American operations and offshore the jobs

So on this July 4, tell your Congressman to vote for these two proposed laws, then buy American-made American flags; red, white and blue American-made pinwheels, and American-made baseball bats for the backyard game.

ABC News anchor Diane Sawyer makes buying American easy by listing American-made products by state.

And, of course, buy American-made sparklers to celebrate. There's still one company manufacturing them in the United States. It's Diamond Sparklers in Youngstown, Ohio. Phantom Fireworks stores stock them.

America just isn't independent if it's dependent on foreign manufacturers for its Independence Day celebrations.

Romney heard "love it or leave it" and by golly he left it.

I read the first paragraph and knew that you do not understand business economy and government incentives put under the Clinton administration to outsource jobs overseas an a tax advantage for the company. The job I am in is that the cost of outsourcing to say India saves very little in what we do here.
Change the tax incentives and the jobs will stay here. Get rid of the union strong arm and the jobs will stay here. There has to be a balance and until the government and unions adjust the jobs will go else where.

I don't think Romney ever specifically said "Buy foreign". This author is simply speculating what Romney would say based on his previous business and personal financial decisions.

I'm sure Romney would not recommend that anyone buy foreign. I haven't read anything that shows Romney not supporting the Bring Home Jobs Act. I do believe that actions speak louder than words, and Romney may have made some decisions in the past that benefited himself and not his country, but this article is misleading.

The only problem with this logic, is that everyone else outside of the US, should by that logic refuse to buy US goods and only buy products from their own countries--or countries that engage in fair international trade. The last time the world engaged in heavy handed protectionism was the 1930s--that certainly worked out well, now didn't it?

Of course. But I remember in 1965 the Cdn Minister of Econ & Dev Robt. Macaulay started a Buy Canadian rally. I understood then that if you buy your stuff fro elsewhere, your factories to dwindle and don't be surprised if your son/daughter or brother/sister do not have jobs. With the manufacturing being closed down in the US (Bain/Romney) and going to Taiwan & China, (Bain & Romney) then for the "price" of cheaper goods you lose all. As now. ANd today I read that Romney has stashed away $250 million and we won't be able to get it to tax him crafty, wily fox who doesn't even realize what he has done to us. The thing is, we need to balance it; All our expenditures are going overseas now. thanks Romney Scuzzbuckit.

The productivity of and value received from American manufacturers is demonstrably greater than that of the Chinese. I once bought a Chinese-made 12" tongue-and-groove plier (channellock type) for $12; they soon bent, and having no warranty, became an ugly paperweight. I spent $17 on the original American-made Channellock plier, which is both lighter and stronger, and has a lifetime unconditional guarantee; I'm still using it after 10 years of heavy use.

American-made products are more often than not of significantly higher quality than Chinese-made, hence the pricing differential. When a Chinese product is of equal quality, pricing is much the same as American-made, if not higher.

One example of many: at Home Depot, a 4-pack of 60-watt incandescent light bulbs from Sylvania, made in the USA by American workers, costs $ 2.59. The same 4-pack of light bulbs from GE, made in China, costs $ 4.99.

The cost of American-made products is a reflection of the manufacturing paradigm of high-quality tooling and highly trained craftspeople. The Chinese manufacturing paradigm is to use LOTS of low-skill labor -- it takes 5 days and 325 (VERY low paid- ~$350/month) minimally trained workers to assemble an Ipad.

If you only use a tool once or twice a year, and don't care if it is awkward and clunky, by all means purchase Chinese products. Want to buy a tool just once, buy American. And light bulbs? Shop smart...

A word of caution regarding Romney: Watch very carefully what he says when he thinks all ears are aimed away from him. Just let someone challenge his "buy foreign" comment and watch him do such a fast flip flop that all whose eyes are on him will be dizzy. Yesterday, there was a piece on here about Romney owning into the Stericycle company which disposes aborted fetuses, and it noted how Bain Capitol stamped down this information in 1999 while Romney was campaigning for office. One person commented on here that Stericycle waste was ground up & included into supplements & green foods, BUT there was no way to know whether this person heard such facts or was attempting to be silly. Say what you mean & mean what you say, people. Although I wouldn't mind seeing Romney squirming over information about him being "out there," since he was enjoying the Trump lies.

Democrat help unions and unions donate to democrats. The article seem to be more BS then facts. This adminstration is making a trade deal in San Diego and will not release the facts or allow anyone in. This deal will allow companies to come to America and build but they will not have to obey American laws and rules. There will be a panel of people from other countries to decide if They obey or not. American companies will have to follow the laws and rules. Obama penalizing American companies again. Unions who are in bed with him do not fight this.

What is your source of this stuff you're repeating? If your source is FOX or Limbaugh, shame on you for believing & trying to spread such bunk. Or is it the sleeze from Texas who tried to trash the President with lies about origin? Or sleezy Trump?

re: Call Centers, never could understand why centers went to India etc, that India call center may pay workers less but the infrstructre is actually a larger investment than if left in the US. If a company if only interested in reducing costs they would be better off going into the Midwest for example. A $10 per hour job in some small towns in the Midwest would allow the person to purchase a home for example. Infrastructure would not require loads on additional Satellite time or generators etc, etc as with an India call center where dependability of power must be taken into consideration. Government in the Midwest would also take kindly to someone providing 100/150 jobs in a small town of 5000. This also does not even consider callers ability to also understand the English being spoken.

Call centers in India or any foreign country only anger Americans who have to deal with people they can't understand, thus they lose business for the companies. This is the reason I quit my land phone to get away from Verizon & quit Sprint's cell phone to avoid really poor english from unkind people who I couldn't understand in the first place.

This is one of the many things that bugs me with republicans. They love to talk about Patriotism. They love to criticize this President on the flimsiest of evidence that he doesnt put America first that he weakens America etc. Yet for them its fine to buy foreign to put your money in Swiss banks, outsource jobs. They criticize and challenge other people's patriotism but no one is suppose to question or challenge theirs. Personally I dont care if the person's politics is in line with mine I would NEVER vote for President who has a bank accounts in Foreign countries. But if anyone brings that up its sacrilege for republicans but imagine if a democrat was running and had money in a Swiss bank account.

Willard enjoys the priviledges and protections of being a US citizen, imo, why shouldn't he should pay his taxes like every body else . imho, if he wants to be a citizen of Cayman, or Bermuda or Switzerland or whatever he keeps his treasure, then he could move there LOL!

From Mr. Gerard's article: "It has become accepted wisdom that consumer electronics products can no longer be made in the United States.

Google, always an innovator, decided that accepted wasn't wise. Starbucks did too."

What consumer electronics does Starbuck make? Pay attention!!

I see no reason that electronics can't be produced in the US just as easily as bringing back call center jobs. You know Romney really favors offshore production as well as money stashing since he hides his billions offshore and says, "buy foreign." People, take a closer look at Romney, and in fact, use a magnifying glass to see his wrinkles & squirming.
12:40 PM on 07/03/2012
Electronics can be produced just as easily in the USA but not as inexpensively. Even though many of these are designed and prototyped in the USA, they are produced overseas because it is too costly to produce them in the USA. Since these goods need to be competitive world-wide, it would be foolish, even silly to produce the world-wide goods outside the USA and produce the USA goods within the USA. Both would be more expensive in their target markets. I certainly don't know that "Romney really favors offshore production..." I can more readily imagine that he favors having America be competitive in the world-side markets that USA made goods must be competitive in order to maintain our standard of living relative to the rest of the world. Now our standard of living is being maintained as a result of borrowing now with promises of future repayment. That future repayment can only be made by either becoming much more competitive world-wide or inflating our currency or a combination of them. Unless the American public recognizes and acts on this we are two generations away from becoming Greece writ large.

Time for a cover song??

"I Think I'm Turning Chinese?"

We as a nation have to start somewhere and these to bills make complete sense for America. Why is it that the GOP/TP are always talking patriotism and how much they love America, but sell it off to the highest bidder. It is shameful. I always try to buy American, Im so happy with my new Chevy Sonic made in the motor city. We need to give incentives to the companies bringing jobs back, not the opposite. Our nation can't survive on low paying or service industry jobs. If your congressman opposes these measures to bring prosperity back home, SEND HIM HOME on election day :)
