My "Get Through It" Playlist

Exhaustion seems to make me a more forgiving listener.

While I am still looking for a scientist to back my claim that my body is totally devoid of endorphins, I must endure thrice-weekly cardio sessions until President Obama amends the constitution to decree that ice cream and candy be considered health foods -- my actual wish to former Pres. Clinton as a five-year-old.

Even though it seems as if I can barely tolerate regular exercise, I know how important it is for my health: I literally run for my life. So I jog, which is an active verb for listening-to-my-iPod-while-briskly-moving-outside-and-using-Instagram (because if it's not photographed and published online, then it didn't happen). Initially I built my playlist to increase in intensity as the fatigue set in. I liked this method and still employ it sometimes, but now I more often switch to shuffle, taking inspiration from my love of dancing. And that's forced me to admit that I enjoy a Miley Cyrus tune -- and several other artists who would seem shameful for a music snob to mention, let alone jam to -- while under extreme duress (or, you know, mile five).

Listen to this playlist chronologically for a slow climb of intensity or try it on random if you enjoy eccentricities like I do. Exercising to a variety of tunes from 1970 to 2012 elicits a plethora of emotion. Every cliched, cinematic scene from a military helicopter flies through my mind during "Gimme Shelter," but on the other hand, I cannot avoid acknowledging my angsty teen years with The Libertines. Of course, the influence of my Soulcycle practice is undeniable here with motivational remixes, and these tracks have lead me to the conclusion that House doesn't necessary belong indoors -- instead it's most effective while running outside. Still, it was important to discover that all music can be appropriate in the right circumstance: Exhaustion seems to make me a more forgiving listener.
