Ricky Martin's Concert Boycotted by the Church

Posted: 03/26/11 07:05 PM ET

Ricky Martin's tour started with accusations from self-proclaimed apostol Wanda Rolón, stating in a press conference that he was condemning Puerto Ricans to hell with his new tour: Music, Soul and Sex.

On March 22, 2011, three days before his first show, Wanda Rolón wrote on Facebook:

This weekend Puerto Rico receives a man saved and brought from hell to the light, Nicky Cruz, while another one pretends to drag us all to hell. RM [Ricky Martin] has been proclaimed its ambassador (hell's, that is). Puerto Rico wake up, everyone praise the lord. This is the island of the Lamb. Alert God.

This statement was later deleted, because angry Ricky Martin's fans reported the hate-speech through the site's abuse policy.

Pastor Wanda Rolón expressed her disapproval toward homosexuality in a press conference held on March 24, 2011 at the Capitolio. In said conference, she reinforced her opposition to Ricky Martin's behavior, stating that he was leading children and young people into the abominable world of homosexuality.

On Friday the 25th of March, a group of anti-homosexuality activists held a protest in front of the Choliseo, while avid Ricky Martin's fanatics arrived for the anticipated concert. Wanda Rolon's followers promised to be there for the remaining three days, condemning Ricky Martin's confessed sexual orientation and the nature of his concert. According to Wanda Rolón and this group, the whole island will join Satan in the afterlife, since four shows were completely sold out.

Ricky Martin hasn't responded to Wanda Rolón's accusations, but during his concerts he said, "Don't be afraid to live, Puerto Rico."

Before anyone listens to the Church's opinion on anything, they should read just the first 6 pages of the Grand Jury report about child rape by priests, and the cover up by the Church. It will take you 5 minutes, and will show you the results of a legal investigation (not an internal Catholic one). You will be horrified. Wow... Over 63 priests in one state alone! Horrified indeed.

Your headline implies that Pastor Rolon speaks for the church. Well, I, too, am a pastor, and let me state that she does not speak for me or for the many Christians I know who believe that God loves and accepts all people regardless of sexual orientation. "The Church" is not boycotting Ricky Martin, as much as Pastor Rolon may wish it were.

Thank you! I believe we have to accept each other for our own differences! Even if it means it's against our own beliefs. I think the world should have there own freedom of religion. Our sexual preferences should remain our own. As long as people aren't committing crimes. Such as rape etc. God stands for love and freedom. Not hurt and hate. Thank you for stepping up!

Thank you for replying and I'm sorry you felt that way. Wanda Rolón was not the only one who condemned Ricky, but it's true not all pastors think alike. Thank you for being a refreshing religious person, and may God grant you the wisdom to love all humankind.

Why not let Ricky Martin sing? How does someone's sexual preferences influence there gift of song? What's up with that. Do the religions own us?
02:25 PM on 03/31/2011
I hope one day all religions of all the world would realize how important it is that we don't live in FEAR or HATE! Why not let Ricky Martin sing? We are all created equal and it is our birth right to choose our own paths in LIFE!!

Right on Ricky Martin! :) I think the churches have to take a step back for once! We all are created equal. It is no one's concern what anyone's sexual preferences are. What gives them the right to boss other around? I say serve your god out of love.. not FEAR! What comes around goes around. God is not judging us by our acts of love. We are being judged by our acts upon each other! I'm happy for Ricky.. You would think after all this time. The churches would realize it is our RIGHT as people to choose our own paths in life! There should be a law against HATE! and yes it should fall against the wall....... I am for gay rights and for Ricky Martin's happiness. If you church people don't like it.. Then too bad!

The next time a Christian whines about being 'persecuted,' I am going to direct them to this article.

Absolutely hateful, delusional, and ridiculous! You Christians made your bed....

I agree! Ricky should be able to sing!

I'm happy to see that Puerto Rico loves one and only Ricky Martin,

Ricky is performing tonight for the forth time in San Juan so that will make 60.000 people
who attended his PR concerts in 4 days.

And Ricky didn't tone anything down, his performace is very provocative.

Me too! I love his boldness and courage. I feel sorry for people that claim to be Christian and then go about their lives spreading so much hate toward "different".
