Mainstream Media Fails Again in Coverage of Jerusalem Bombing

Posted: 03/23/11 05:10 PM ET

The media in this country never ceases to disappoint. Media outlets all over the world make mistakes and lack in their coverage at one point or another, but I wanted to throw a few things at my TV after watching CNN's coverage of the bombing in Jerusalem this morning. And to be fair to CNN, I didn't get a chance to check out how other American media outlets covered the bombing, but I'm sure they didn't veer off too far from CNN's coverage.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the bombing, but Isha Sesay, one of CNN's genius anchors, started off the news hour with, "We begin with a gruesome explosion in Jerusalem." Gruesome huh? How come there was no "breaking news" graphic when eight Palestinians were killed in Gaza yesterday? Palestinian children were killed by Israeli air raids, but I guess that's not gruesome enough for some media outlets. The death of innocent Palestinians is not considered breaking news. These "news" outlets always seem to pick up the story half way through and never from the beginning (when Palestinians are getting killed by Israelis); it's only when an Israeli gets killed or injured that breaking coverage begins.

The era of responsible journalism is long dead; I know that, but tell us the ENTIRE story. There is always a beginning, middle, and an end. Tell us about the Israeli blockade on Gaza that has crippled the Gazan economy and has made living conditions there unbearable for its 1.5 million citizens. The UN described the situation there as "grim", "deteriorating" and a "medieval siege."

Then CNN had the mayor of Jerusalem, Nir Barkat, on the phone to discuss the bombing. Barkat began by telling us how "innocent people were hurt" and how they will find the "coward person" who committed this act. Yes, innocent people were hurt and that's always wrong and unfortunate, but "innocence" isn't exclusive to Israelis. And the Israeli military commits acts of cowardice on a daily basis when it drops bombs on defenseless Palestinian civilians.

Carol Costello, with a really sad looking face like she's about to cry, told us about two Israeli pregnant women who went into labor after the explosion. Again, this is unfortunate and no one should have to live through the fear of being blown up into a thousand different pieces, whether it is on a bus or via an Israeli air raid, but there have been countless pregnant Palestinian women who have had to deliver their babies on Israeli checkpoints due to arbitrary restrictions on movement. Not to mention the deaths of Palestinian babies on these checkpoints due to complications and the lack of medical supplies.

Yes, I write this from a Palestinian perspective, but it doesn't mean that I am insensitive to the loss of innocent life on the other side. Yes, I am angry about the Israeli occupation and treatment of Palestinians, but it doesn't mean that I agree with or support bombing a bus full of innocent people. Neither do the majority of Palestinians. But at the same time, I cannot stand how some media organizations in this country jam Israeli propaganda down the throats of their viewers and readers. The Pro-Israeli slant in the media here makes me cringe with disgust. And I KNOW I' m not the only informed viewer who does an eye-roll when it comes to American TV stations' coverage of the region.

The American media's coverage of the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the conflict that ensues because of this occupation really infuriates me to say the least. Tell me both sides of the story. Provide me with context. Present me with the facts and explain to me the WHY! Overlooking such basic elements of journalism places a good deal of responsibility on mainstream American media outlets with regard to perpetuating public ignorance about the Middle East.

Here is both sides of the story:

Arabs are offered their own state but decline, Israel says yes and creates a country for any Jewish refuge. Funny none of the Arab states have allowed the Pals to do this.

Instead Arabs attack the new state of Israel and Israel wins. They get the land, which is usually how it works.

Suicide bombers kill thousands of Israelis, so checkpoints are created to weed out the terrorists. Oh...don't forget that EGYPT also has checkpoints in Gaza.

Pals allow their leader, Arafat, to steal all the money they are given so they end up living in poverty.

Gaza is made Juden free so Pals can create their own country. Their corrupt government and leaders AGAIN keep them in poverty, although did you see the new Gaza mall? Somebody is shopping.

Gaza sends hundreds of rockets into Israel civilian areas...Israel retalitates and unfortunately, civilians who are human shields for Hamas, get killed.

Now the third reign of terror is starting with the Pals killing Israelis and the Israelis retalitating and creating more restrictions. If the attacks stop, Israel has no reason to retaliate.

There will never be an end until Pals put down their weapons and bombs and accept Israel's right to exist. Simple as that.

Al Jazeera has a natural bias toward reporting on the Palestinian view of the conflict because there is a natural sympathy amongst Arabs. Arab viewers around the Arab world automatically "get" the Palestinians and are naturally inclined to empathize with them more than the Israelis.

American news organizations have a natural bias toward the Israeli view simply because Israelis seem more familiar and "Americanish" than do the Palestinians. The Americans "get" the Israelis and are naturally inclined to empathize with them.

It's not a conspiracy. It's not about money. It's about affinity. People are drawn to others who are most like themselves. Period. That's why most people in Morocco (far away from the middle east) will see things from the Palestinian perspective, while most westerners (equally far away from the middle east) will see thngs from the Israeli (more western) perspective.

If the conservative, Christian-fundamentalist backed media were to report the truth on Israel and Palestine, the following "problems" would occur:

* the media would have to admit that it has been lying or at least severely biased all this time, about this and so many other things,
* the US and its allies would have to admit that the forcible formation and defence of Israel may have been an error, losing moral high ground,
* American Jews would begin (in number, because I know some who already do) to question the validity of their right to the Holy Land,
* the business of returning Jews would dry up,
* Jews would remain in the US or return to the US, to the dismay of the anti-Semite, pro-Israel fundamentalists,
* the process of bringing about the end times and Christian dominance (which, according to their mythology, depends in part on the return of the Jews to Israel) would be diverted,
* Americans would begin to have sympathy for some groups of Muslims, derailing support for the military-industrial complex.

It's not going to happen any time soon, which is one reason I hope that Al Jazeera gains a foothold in the US, not because I agree with everything they put forth but because I believe that their perspective is vital to the development of honest dialogue about the world.

If you do read this: I often turn to the BBC (among other outlets) for information. Have you found their reporting to be

When it comes to the MSM stories concerning Israel and Palestine, I always know that the MSM will portray Isreal as the cowboy in the white hat that is always right and Palestine will be the cowboy in black.

Personally, I find it infuriating and nauseating.

As a Canadian living close to the boarder I have access to news stations in both countries and there is a big difference in reporting between our countries. It seems that in America much less time is given to report a story and much less detail is given - regardless of the issue.
But even still the Palestinian side is rarely adequately reported due to the relationship between western governments and Isreal.

We all know why coverage of these stories is slanted. In the U.S. anything Jewish or Israeli is innocent and good and anything Arab or Muslim is terrorism and bad. It is a sad situation.

How do we correct it? We have to have leaders that will stand up to AIPAC and we don't have any of those.

US news coverage is not biased toward Israeli because of AIPAC or because powerful American presidents for some reason can't "stand" up to 12 million Jews or 7 million Israelis or 6 million American Jews. No, the coverage is biased toward Israel because Americans feel more affinity with Jews and with Israel and with their bible stories than they do with the Palestinian story. That's why.

"The media in this country never ceases to disappoint". This clearly points out the lack of understanding this writer has about American news media. Our media provides very little news, they provide statements with little or no factual foundation - corporate mandated perspective. The israel and palestinian conflict have little importance to Americans, we are struggling with our own problems. What concerns us most is our government keeps giving israel billions, and we are asked to cut our social services. isreael will get the 20 billion they are asking for, but the American people will not know about until after the fact. The media never asks why Americans have been designated as the financial provider to israel, they just follow their owners orders. As far as most Americans are concerned we should stop funding any country in the middle east, and let them throw rocks at each other. Like most HP'ers we are here to seek sources for information (not news) that will provide us with facts, so we can judge the validity of stories our media feeds us. Good media news died in the 50's, it has been replaced with half-truths, self serving opinions, and out right lies. Americans have to spend hours researching facts in order to truely find the truth. Internet freedom is important to us for this very reason.

I agree with her overall point in her article, news coverage should cover the beginning, middle and end of an event be it a good, neutral or bad event. The audience needs to be informed and when news coverage selectively covers the chronological sequence of events the audience is hampered in their ability to evaluate and understand the event in its proper context. Our international news coverage has always been lacking compared to other foreign press and that has hurt us as citizens of the world because since our government engages in foreign conflict we as a people should be better and more objectively informed of foreign events.

The media in this country never CEASE to disappoint. It's plural!!!

As long as the U.S. supports Israel with money and weapons we will never be allowed to see a true picture of Israel's oppression and occupation in the Palestinian Territories. We might protest so much of our tax dollars being sent to support such activities when people here are being asked to sacrifice their health, jobs, education, homes and food because America and the States are "broke". If you want to get an unbiased picture of any country watch AlJazeera.

Al Jazeera has good coverage, although it too has a bias: a bias against the developed world. Also, it doesn't report any criticism of the gulf states or Saudi Arabia. At all. During their coverage of Egypt, while big demonstrations were going on in Bahrain, they were completely silent. Of course, they say nothing about oppression in Qatar.
05:14 PM on 03/24/2011
Whats the other side of the story? That Israel targets bomb factories and terrorist leaders in Gaza, and that palestinian civilians get killed because the palestinian militants purposely use civilians as human shields? Be careful what you wish for. The "other side of the story" isn't more flattering.

no story when a couple weeks ago settlers upset with the government shutting an observation post threw molotov cocktails into palestinian homes and beat palestinian with clubs.....roles reversed the screams of terrorist would be deafening

My post sums up her pathetic bleating about the poor sainted Palestinians and how unfortunate it is anyone should dare bother to notice their barbarism. Sure the Palestinians commit an atrocity here and there but, but, but them Israelis they’re the bad guys! I’d say she should be ashamed of the fact that she took the time to write this screed, but why bother, shame is unknown to Palestinian fetishists like herself. How unfortunate.

American media follows the views of it's owners which are mostly conservative owned. Only the independent films on PBS shows both sides of the conflict or even just the plight of Palestine. Follow the money, always. There is little coverage of the future election either. If we in America want truthiness we have to turn to social media. It's not on the TV except for some PBS.

I would also recommend the investigative journo-docu's done on Current TV, they are very good.

Thank you for the advice. If it is cable or satellite I don't have it unless it's on YouTube. I will look there. I can only afford rabbit ear reception. I just moved up from dial-up to broadband recently. Wow! I doubt that I would spend money on TV anyway. The conservatives ruined it. I keep informed by social media and progressive talk radio. And thanks to PBS for expanding channels when we went digital. I cannot recommend talk radio enough. The hosts keep me busy verifying their issues. Your Current TV sounds interesting and something that would interest me. Thank you for the personal attention, it's very kind.

Agreed with your assessment of the news here. MSNBC with Dylan Ratigan was no better yeaterday. Is as if the attacks always happen in the vacuum.
