Right now, out the windows of our office in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, we can hear the chanting. There must be at least a hundred or so immigrants -- mostly Mexican -- who have heeded the call to protest today.
Waving Mexican and American flags, the loudest and most persistent chant is "USA! USA! USA!"
No matter what you might think about the issue of immigration - and it's a very complex issue -- you have to admire the fact that they're out there, protesting. With the new "security state" we seem to live in, some of these folks, especially those who are here illegally, are risking potential deportation by even showing their faces in such a public way.
Passing cars are honking their horns in solidarity, and at least one police helicopter hovers overhead.
Is this the emergence of the next rights movement? Are they the ones to remind the rest of us who we are and where we come from? Are they the best and the bravest among us, after all?
As a child of immigrants myself, I stand at the window and chant with them, "USA! USA!"
