My move to a new house has spurred my creativity, but most of all its the backyard space that excites me even more. For me, this is the time of year to consider my options for creating my sacred space because I am into summer. Having a private spot where I can process, meditate and rejuvenate helps me to feel more positive and enlightened.

An outdoor space doesn't have to be complicated or expensive. The most important consideration is your intention regarding what you want that space to do for you. Consider the following before beginning.

1. Figure out much space is available to you, and is that space conducive to all weather conditions? Granted, it you live in a place that sees the same weather all season, then you will have less to consider.

2. Decide whether it is truly outdoors or on a patio that extends to the outdoors. People with seasonal weather usually create an area on a covered deck or patio so they can use the space pretty much all year around.

3. Use as much of the landscape as possible by incorporating objects that are simple and personal to you.. This will help you to claim the space and feel more at home there because you've put a bit of yourself into it.

4. Gauge your feelings and make sure you are completely comfortable with the space. The more comfortable you are, the more you are apt to go there.

Creating an outdoor sacred space can come together quickly, but will unfold over time as you add and remove things from it as you and/or your environment change. Take your time and enjoy putting it together. It is that energy that will set the tone and help you reveal many fond moments of a personal and/spiritual nature. Above all, it may help with releasing stress and is a great way to enjoy the outdoors.
