6 Resolutions to Make Your Life Better Next Year

Posted: 12/30/11 08:32 AM ET

I confess -- I'm a resolution maker.

I've found that I'm significantly more successful if I stick to just one realistic resolution. Case in point, "I'm going all organic" in 2003 was a total bust. I was back to Quik Trip corn dogs by mid January.

I've found the best resolutions, those where I reap immediate and lasting benefits, are when I set goals for improving my side of an important relationship.

Here are my six favorite high-impact resolutions. They don't require any fancy equipment or organizing products. They're free. Pick one, stick with it for 30 days, and you might find the life improvements astounding.

1. Find Something To Appreciate About Your Spouse

Once you get a negative lens on someone, it's hard to see their finer qualities. I'm sure your spouse has flaws; they may even be big ones. But instead of trying to fix the things you don't like, which rarely works, find something to appreciate about him or her. Your spouse may not change, but when you can change your own inner dialogue, you'll experience a more satisfying relationship.

Whats with all these interacial advertizment photos??? What are the advertizers trying to depict??? And why is it always a non black girl with a black guy? Why not say a black woman with a non black guy? How rare is that? Or why not a spanish guy with say a chinese girl? Doesn't happen! Why not?!?

I haven't done resolutions in years and years. I figure if there's something you need to do, why wait until Jan 1 to decide to do it. But since the world is going to end this year, I figured I'd make a minor exception. My new years resolutions are carry-over from things I'm already doing for myself:

1. Eat better - more vegetables, less junk, cook at home and eat out less.
2. Get more exercise. Go for a walk every day no matter what the weather.
3. Lose weight. If I can get number 1 & 2 working that should follow as a natural consequence.
4. Get rid of all the STUFF that's cluttering up the place. Reuse & recycle. That pair of 29 inch waist Levis from 1967 is NEVER going to fit again; take them to Goodwill for somebody else who CAN wear it.
5. Clean the house. If the world really is going to end on Dec 21, I don't want to be shuffling off to eternity with a sink full of dirty dishes.

These are all great ideas. I can't argue with a single one, though I don't advocate making resolutions at all. I learned a better way to think about how to make it a great year.

I finally solved my 25-year weight problem, losing over 100 lbs. for good, when I stopped making resolutions and adopted sound behavioral therapy technique to turn my life around. Here's my article about the problem with making resolutions: http://theandersonmethod.com/category/goal-setting-for-a-truly-happy-new-year/
