Coming: A Rock Musical of Biblical Proportions

If you're unbendingly religious to the point you refuse evolution as a concept, this is not the play for you. If you have no sense of humor or can't handle religious humor, this is not the play for you. If you're against gay culture and homosexuality, this is not the play for you. But for the rest of the world, you finally have a hot new musical that will blow you away and have you Coming back for more.

2011-02-09-20110203_0383edit.jpg

In a recession-era New York City it becomes difficult to justify spending money on a musical, and Broadway is certainly feeling the sting. Amazing, edgy plays like Avenue Q, Urinetown and the ubiquitous Rent have left the Great White Way, and the void is aching to be filled by the next big smack-in-your-face thing. Coming: A Rock Musical of Biblical Proportions is that bitch slap that will shock you and leave its impression after you leave.

A mash-up of Velvet Goldmine, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Labyrinth, The God Delusion and The Holy Bible; Coming shows us how religion impacts love, sexuality, drive and fame. The lead character, Damian Salt, played by the playwright Erik Ransom, is the direct descendant of the King and Queen of Sodom & Gomorrah. A blending of Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert and Marilyn Manson, Damian is sin incarnate and, of course, an obsessed-over rock star living in NYC. And, since you can't have the Devil without God, in steps Josh Crenshaw -- a pious singer/songwriter from Bethlehem, PA who wants to spread his message of love and faith on American Icon.

2011-02-09-20110203_0205edit.jpg

While Damian sees his star waning, Josh wins over the American Icon judges as well as the American public and finds himself under fame's microscope. With so much anger, hurt and sadness in the world, Josh appears to be the shining light that the public desperately craves. When Josh's personal life is called into question, he loses everything: American Icon, his love, his fans and his faith. Like a chapter ripped directly from The Bible, the Devil tempts Jesus, as Damian brings Josh under his wing. As Damian and Josh learn from each other, they both find that neither needs the absentee "Father" that had influenced so much of their life. Where Damian once considered no one but himself, he now finds love and beauty in others while Josh realizes having blind faith is ignorant and begins asking questions. Both are willing to sacrifice for love, and while neither abandons their original message, a compromise is made that satisfies the entire world.

Like any great play, there is tragedy and strife, comedy and love -- you will feel your face ache from laughing and your eyes water from tears. Between Coming's timely material, apocalyptic visions (birds falling from the sky anyone?), and edgy subject, New York City is the perfect venue for this next big thing. I am not a huge musical guy but this does sound very good. It's always nice to hear of something new and unique and this seems to fit the bit. I will be looking forward to this in NYC. Keep up the great articles!

Wow, what a great article. I've never heard of this show before, can't wait to see it when it (hopefully) reached NYC!!!!

I will confess I saw the show 5 times during the 3 weeks and each time I saw it, there were things that I saw that I had missed in the previous shows. Be it a innuendo that was done or said, a facial expression or the reaction of the audience. I had an AMAZING time and I am embarrassed to admit on closing night I was "caught" by several of the cast members singing the songs along with them. This will go far if I have anything to say or do about it. I even brought a movie director to come and see it, to get him to direct a movie version of this Epic! I will say this "Bravo" to Erik and to the entire cast I couldn't imagine anyone else in your parts!

I've spent most of my professional life as a musician in the music world. I was reticent to get involved with "Coming:" because I'm in a protracted moving process. I am so glad that the producer/directors, Bill Egan and Mark Dahl and the MD, Jacob Bremkamp, twisted my arm and pulled me back into the fold. Erik Ransom's energy and creativity are indeed magical and contagious, and I had suspected this from the first time we met. Everyone involved was on their "A game" and brought their best to the table. One could not ask for a better, hotter experience in a long cold Philadelphia winter....Hell, we even had a big crowd on Super Sunday !!
Truly, truly an honor to involved that I will never forget !!

Great show with so much meaning behind it. The writer had so much to say and you could tell he really wanted to make a statement with the conclusion. I consider myself to be spiritual but I didn't feel offended in the least, he made valid points. Not to mention the outfits were SO well done. Definitely a must see show!

Never has so much fun been fit into so little time. Great dancing, fabulous costumes, wonderful songs and a tremendous cast and crew. And the best part is that everyone gets to be in on the fun, the jokes and the message! kudos to you all!

@Douglas. what makes this show so great is it is "self-aware" of its own camp. Spoiler alert: Jesus and the Anti-Christ fall in love. And in that it transcends it being another LGBT play and becomes about all extremism. At its heart Coming has a biblical message - "love your enemy,"

The first time I saw this was at the reading in Philly and it had me laughing and crying from opening to the finale. Seeing the full production was even more amazing. All of the actors were top-notch and the costumes by Bobby Fabulous were well, fabulous. The music is funny, moving, clever, toe tapping goodness. I have been singing the songs from this amazing show since I saw it. I can't wait to see this on a stage in NYC. Erik Ransom is the most talented new writer/composer/actor out there!

I'm gay, but not sure this is gonna be a thing....this looks camp at best.
LGBT theater mostly has an intellectual advantage over LGBT films, but this looks like a bad LGBT film made into a play. A theater version of Drag Queens In Outer Space.
When I think of LGBT related theater, Angels in America, Bent, Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage Aux Folles andI am proud.
Then again, there is no reason why I wouldnt be completely wrong in my cynical intuition. I often am.

Douglas, I am biased, because I was part of the production, but please do yourself a favor and put your cynical intuition on sabbatical and check this show out... To categorize it as camp at best is a huge disservice to yourself, theater phreeks, straights, LGBT, and this quite baddass steamroller of musical theater. I've said enough, hopefully some video clips will be posted and a new production run will be announced...

No problem! I definitely will especially now that Oscar winner, Jaye Davidson has reccomended it ! Ive always loved you.
Did you do something for Tanya Sarne / Ghost several years ago or am I very confused?

Douglas: Don't use the photos of the show alone to make yer decision--you gotta see the thing! I think you will be pleasantly surprised. Erik Ransom is one of the smartest, most well read and scholarly artists I know. His book and lyrics are clever and well rooted in sincere intellectual questioning. There's a happy balance of substance and camp in this piece, which is what I think makes it so unique. I hope this show is produced again somewhere where you can see it. Cheers!

This is such a great project! I wish I could have seen it in Philly- How about you bring it to Pittsburgh?
12:21 PM on 02/10/2011
This musical is unlike anything i have ever seen! Charming, dirty, funny, heartbreaking, and hot... All wrapped up into one great moment of theatre! Erik Ransom truly is the best thing to happen to musical theatre since Sondheim...

What an awesome show! I saw it twice in Philly and definitely want to see it again. Erik Ransom and Adam Hostler played perfectly off each other! Collen Corcoran was hilarious as each of her characters, especially the open mic hostess. The sexy cast was drenched in impeccable costumes by Bobby Fabulous. The gents at Traverse Arts Project (Bill Egan and Mark Dahl) put on a hot ass show with all the pomp you'd expect from an apocalyptic rock musical. So much fun! Get ready, New York, this show is about to give you a swift kick in the face. Mark my words. I got dibbs on the movie rights. Seriously.

A moving piece of original theatre. Seeing the premiere of this musical, one really felt like something special was happening. This is the kind of art that can make waves. Kudos to the cast and crew for being brave enough to make this statement, and in such a fun, energetic way! I know Philly isn't the last stop for "Coming"!
