Never underestimate the power of fiction.
Over the years literature has provided us with a lot of kick-ass characters; characters who inspire us and motivate us to better ourselves as individuals. Characters who we can relate to, who we can rely on.
Male, female, animal, even inanimate objects. The list of "kick-ass" characters in literature is long, way too long for just one blog post. So for today at least, I'm thinking it's best to begin with my top ten favourite female characters (which actually proved quite the challenge!)
In no particular order...
1. Elizabeth Bennet - Pride and Prejudice
I admire Lizzie Bennet for so many reasons. Her intelligence, her quick wit and how head-strong she is. She always stands up for what she believes in, regardless of consequence.
2. Molly Weasley - Harry Potter Series
Mother to Ron and a maternal figure to so many others, Molly Weasley is quite frankly amazing. Strong, selfless and fiercely protective of those she loves; a winning combination in our eyes.
3. Jo March - Little Women
The second oldest sister to her siblings Meg, Beth and Amy. Jo inspires me and so many others; she is brave, passionate and caring.
4. Jane Eyre - Jane Eyre
Jane's integrity is hugely admirable. She overcomes adversity whilst always remaining true to her beliefs and self-worth.
5. Anne Shirley - Anne of Green Gables
Anne is flawed but that's part of her charm - she is relatable to all. Her optimism, resilience and rich imagination are all traits that are hugly admirable.
6. Scout Finch - To Kill A Mockingbird
Scout has a lot of admirable qualities. Three favourites are her honesty, her boldness and her willingness to learn, discover and accept.
7. Hermione Granger - Harry Potter Series
Hermione possesses a lot of wonderful characteristics. Perhaps the three most admirable are her fierce loyalty, her bravery and intelligence. A brilliant role model - it's cool to be smart.
8. Arya Stark - A Game Of Thrones
Arya is adventurous, non-judgemental, and independent. She rejects the restricting societal norms that encompass her world.
9. Eponine - Les Miserables
Eponine has had a tough life and experienced many hardships in her short existence. Resultantly, she is resilient, courageous and possesses a wiseness that far surpasses her years.
10. Bathsheba Everdene - Far From The Madding Crowd
Thomas Hardy created a character who, despite her many complexities, was adored by many. Bathsheba is real and relatable; she is head-strong, feisty and witty - a character with a number of inspiring qualities.
There we have it. Ten kick-ass female characters from literature. Who would be in your list?
