I have been working in the kitchen since I was a kid. I'm usually the one behind the scenes at parties -- slicing up lemons and hunking up cheese, pulling food out the oven and getting it ready to serve as guests start showing up at the door. But this past week, celebrating the launch of my new book Lulu Powers Food to Flowers, I've had to drag myself out of the kitchen (where I really am the most comfortable!), throw on my party dress, and play hostess. I love entertaining and have friends over almost every week at home, but when the party is all about you, it's a little different. Here are a few tips to remember the next time you're supposed to be the center of attention.

  • Dab a little perfume behind your ears -- you want to smell good when you're kissing all your friends.

  • Do a pre-party taste test in the kitchen so you know the food is all up to par.

  • Remove the ponytail holder from your wrist.

  • Have a sip of champagne and forget about yourself.

  • Enjoy your moment, go with the flow and have fun!
