Is the Tanning of America Only Skin Deep?

Posted: 05/17/2012 4:47 pm

It's official: The United States is officially "tan." According to the U.S. Census Bureau's first population estimate by age, race, ethnicity, and sex since the 2010 Census, "50.4 percent of our nation's population younger than age 1 were minorities as of July 1, 2011. This is up from 49.5 percent from the 2010 Census taken April 1, 2010. The population younger than age 5 was 49.7 percent minority in 2011, up from 49.0 percent in 2010."

As expected, media flurry ensued. The Associated Press was among the first outlets to pick up the story reporting, "For the first time, racial and ethnic minorities make up more than half the children born in the U.S." USA Today noted the nation's changing complexion and described the Census Bureau's report as "a sign of how swiftly the USA is becoming a nation of younger minorities and older whites." And according to the New York Times, "such a turn has been long expected, but no one was certain when the moment would arrive."

Now that the moment is here we must reckon with it. Today's Census statement marks a social milestone for a nation that has struggled with issues of diversity, privilege, and power. But, as I suggest in my forthcoming book Clearly Invisible: Racial Passing and the Color of Cultural Identity, the tanning of America might be only skin deep. Or, putting it differently: Is the U.S. passing as "tan"?

Some say no. Among them is entertainment marketing icon Steve Stoute. Stoute writes that "tanning" is more than a change of complexion for our nation. "Tanning" is a change of mind that can lead to increased participation in media, culture, politics, technology, and economics for our nation's youth. The LA Times, for one, hopes that Stoute is right:

The new numbers indicate that the upcoming generations will be more diverse and could have an increasingly broader view of issues -- such as immigration reform -- that are based on race and ethnicity. There will also be cultural changes -- as there have been in recent years, with foods, music and ideas from Latino cultures, for example, spreading into the mainstream.

But a quick Facebook poll shows that many people are doubtful that the effects "tanning" has had in the worlds of culture and marketing will be seen in the worlds of politics and privilege. Take the focus on language: "the irony of the phrase 'majority minority'" or "minorities, really? New terms needed badly" or "Yep. Oxymoron somewhat." Responses like these show that we don't even have the proper language to have a full color conversation about our nation's changing demographics. Then there's the political angle: "This does not mean that white supremacy disappears, one can look at places such as South Africa where even though whites may be in the 'minority' they hold the most power;" or "it appears that the more the numbers change, the more the white establishment digs in;" or "What is the hard work we do now to make that a new reflection of representative democracy?" Responses like these show that looking at demographics without also looking at political representation and effects of legal and social histories does not imply social justice.

Here's why you should care. Because looking at tomorrow's "tanning" generation in demographic terms only subtly promotes them as the chosen ones who can and will dismantle racism that took centuries to build. When we take this perspective we are shifting the responsibility of solving institutional and structural racism off those of us who were born before July 1, 2011 and off our legal and social histories. This is not only unfair -- it's unrealistic. Predicting the demise of racism by the rising number of nonwhite births is probably not the best way to fulfill our desire for a more just society. Wouldn't the present-day elimination of disparities in income, employment, health care, education, crime, punishment and family structure for this new generation (as well as their parents) be more accurate measures?

Before we rush to judgment on whether an "tanning" or "majority-minority" nation is finally doing away with its troubled racial past, we would be wise to remember that having the conversation in demographic terms only forces us to isolate the concepts of race, ethnicity, and racism from the legal, political, and social customs that got us into this mess in the first place. A demographics-only conversation also makes ending racism and ethnocentrism by legal, political, and cultural means all the more difficult to imagine.

As tutdivo stated...the tanning of America is an illusion. All other Ethnicities view Blacks as the bottom of the ladder in our society.

It has already occurred in history numerous times, that the definition of "white" has shifted to suit the needs of the institutional power structure in suppressing the identifiably black and brown populations.

Ethnic Irish, Italians, and Jews were only deemed acceptable to WASPs in melting into the American pot, when it was realized that their numbers were useful in continuing that surpression.

Hispanic Whites will further be granted the knapsack of white privilege in order to continue the divide and conquer techniques that have been in play for hundreds of years.

I think the census data will counter intuitively shift to show a more white majority as more hispanic and mixed people choose to identify as white to escape any stigma of being an ethnic "minority".

Hell, some of the blackest Indians consider themselves white and/or Caucasian, just because they have straight hair.

Anything BUT Black will be the new motto going forward in our future further proving that we will be far from a post-racial society.

Lol. Have we forgotten that many "non-Whites" are just as racist as Whites and carry the same attitudes towards Blacks as Whites. Many will be offended, but even Blacks carry disgustingly racist attitudes towards their own people ultimately hurting themselves. Many Latinos are also technically considered "White" by race. In other words, the tanning of America is an ILLUSION! Whites(a subjective term) could become a minority tomorrow, and they would still be in power as a collective. Until Blacks use their buying power to create an abundance of great black-owned entities, Blacks will always be at the doorstep of someone's form of discrimination and approval. But first, Blacks would have to desire to want to work together and live near each other. But how do Blacks expect to end discrimination towards their own people when Blacks themselves instigate the discrimination of their own people by the racist generalizations they make about their own people. There is power in numbers, but unless those numbers use their power, the power remains in the hands of those who use it most efficiently, even if they are a minority by population. South Africa is mostly Black. It didn't change the intense amount of racism experienced there.

I would answer "Yes" to the question this article poses.

I think it is wrong for all minorities to be grouped together and compared as one percentage to the white percentage of the population. Whites will still be the majority ethnic group in this country. At least until 2050.

These numbers do nothing and solve nothing for racism, more specifically institutional racism.

As long as the white majority controls all the wealth, institutions of gov't, the private sector, and education of this country, no minority group will ever be on equal footing. And not to say that some other ethnic group should have control, but there should be more of a balance of power in these pillars of our society.

Also, African Americans are highly mistaken if they think for one second that the other minority groups will couple with them on political and social issues. Largely, other minority groups hold the same attitudes and views towards Blacks as White racists.

And this is largely why I feel like Black folks need to start paying attention more towards controlling our own sub-economy, dollars, political strength etc, for the good of our community, but NOT to the detriment or expense of any other community. This is not a zero sum game, however we will always be on an island by ourselves as it relates to our economic and political future.

Whites are not a single ethnic group.

Wow - really? You believe that other minorities all have racist views about african-americans?

I can attest to that. Its a culturally American thing to attribute badness with 'blackness' or very darkskinned people. When considering the social strata- very few other minorities will align themselves with Aa's because for so long Aa's are viewed as ideologically at the bottom of the totem pole.

YES! They mist certainly do. All other ethnicities see Black as the bottom of the barrel and will align lock and step with white folks in a heart beat if it meant survival politically and culturally. Even if they are doing so against their own best interest. Any but Black is the mindset most have.

An example of Cultural Marxism. The objective was to weaken the relative solidarity of the racial majority (white folk) in this country, and then divide the country up amongst various competing ethnic/racial enclaves. Classic divide and conquer move.

It is essential, people argue, to preserve some form of "ordered" existence because without order there is chaos. The trouble with order is that you need someone leading. Getting to a consensus on leadership is much deeper than an electoral college or an elected official acting out a congressional role. Here, I think, the above-mentioned post/article makes valid points about fears of isolation and exclusion from a larger discussion on survival. If people can be relegated to certain roles then they are considered controlled. This argument changes when the majority pop. is minority. Will other ethnic groups and idealogues adhere to majority consensus. It's arguable that they won't even if you argue they have no choice. Every democracy presents choices, and people display group choices in how they lead.

Aside from seeming overly spiritual or "churchy," I believe it is obvious that the ever increasing numbers of people of color, meaning Latinos, Asians, African Americans and other non Europeans is becoming the major political power base in this nation. That is causing acts of desperation, overt and covert in the ranks of the white male dominated Republican Party. They see the hand writing on the wall and the Foxes, Limbaughs, Sessions and others are fighting for their political lives.

What do you think that graduate school graduates who are Asian and compete in the world market place have in common with poor immigrants from Mexico. Do you really think both groups have the same desires for public schools, infrastructure, or taxes?

I think the autor has spent too much time in the library. The reason for the "tanning" is illegals and their anchor babies. Why should we be happy that our country is being "bred" out of existence? Some people have the wrong impression of latinos, they seem to think that they are in step with Blacks as "we are all people of color". And they would be dead wrong. Our ancestor BUILT this country with their blood. And unless we come together and stop GIVING America away it wont just be tan it will be called North Mexico.

This is what latinos REALLY think about Blacks:

CrestedSparrow No, actually, you are not more American than indigenous peoples but you THINK you are even against a backdrop of historical and continued discrimination and slavery; I shouldn't have to go into details about it. We have exceeded blacks as the largest minority in this country and we will continue to grow exponentially while non-natives diminish in numbers as nature intended. Let's not talk about countries in bad shape because Africa is no winner; in fact, it rates the lowest in GDP and education even compared to Latin American countries. You only have yourselves to blame right? People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

Brazil is very diverse, with a white minority, but they have quite a lot of race problems and significant problems with wealth disparities. I think that's the future of the US.
04:09 PM on 05/19/2012
No it is not, because the wealth disparity in Brazil is between blacks and whites, and the blacks in the US already have much more parity with whites in business, government, and media than those in Brazil do. So the racial situation in America would have to get worse to become like Brazil.
11:16 PM on 05/19/2012
I think it will get worse in the US.
It already has in some areas.

"The median wealth of white households is 20 times that of black households and 18 times that of Hispanic households, according to a Pew Research Center analysis of newly available government data from 2009.

These lopsided wealth ratios are the largest since the government began publishing such data a quarter century ago and roughly twice the size of the ratios that had prevailed between these three groups for the two decades prior to the Great Recession that ended in 2009."

Now that they are the majority, they are going to take all our wealth. We're going to be impoverished.
01:42 AM on 05/18/2012
This isn't even a good attempt at race baiting. But now that whites are a minority who will you blame for everything?

Now that the "tipping point" has been reach, the birth of each new Hispanic baby and the arrival of each new Latino immigrant will decrease rather than increase diversity. One wonders if diversity proponents will argue for a reduction of immigrants from Latin American countries.

Actually, I lived most of my adult life in El Paso, a city of about 750,000 that is more than 80% Hispanic. El Paso continues to congratulate itself on its "diversity," as if it will become 100% diverse as soon as it becomes 100% Hispanic. While most colleges practives affirmative action to "promote diversity" on campus, the University of Texas continues to expand its efforts to attract more Latino students, even though the student body is 90% Latino. Latino students graduating El Paso high schools get affirmative action preference even though they have been members of the majority all their lives.
