Questioning the Question Order in the Latest Horserace Poll

Posted: 02/ 6/2012 1:07 pm

Today the Washington Post/ABC News released a survey showing Obama over majority support among registered voters (51% Obama, 45% Romney). But as Romney's pollster Neil Newhouse (a partner in the firm Public Opinion Strategies) pointed out in a blast email, the poll asked about a few of Romney potential liabilities just prior to the vote question. This goes against polling best practices, and it's possible the survey shows elevated Obama numbers as a result.

In the full questionnaire, respondents were asked a few questions about Romney's wealth, his 14% tax rate, whether he cut or create jobs, and whether his Mormon religion is a reason to support or oppose him. Then came the general election vote question. Respondents were primed to think of some of Romney's potential liabilities, without similar questions about Obama's personal liabilities. However, it's worth noting a series of Obama job approval ratings on the economy, the deficit, taxes, and others also appeared before the vote. To avoid all these potential complications, the horserace should come quite early in a questionnaire.

Now, to be clear, the individual questions about Romney's liabilities were balanced. They were not the message-testing questions typical in internal campaign polling. And I don't think (nor did Newhouse mean to imply) that the poll is deliberately skewed. Lastly, this is not a "push poll," a term referring to negative persuasion calls masquerading as polls (but frequently--and incorrectly--used to describe any negative message testing).

However, I do think Romney is now facing a likability problem nationally, even as he excels in the Republican primary. In this particular poll, over half of voters say the more they learn about Romney, the less they like him (a question that appeared before the series of questions on Romney's liabilities). Familiarity is breeding contempt, as I wrote about here, and pollster.com tracking shows Romney's unfavorables continue to surge while Obama has opened up a larger lead. But I'm not fully convinced this particular poll adds as much to the discussion as some might think. And it's also a good reminder to watch out for methodological quirks--no matter which candidate benefits.

[Disclosure: I've worked with Neil Newhouse on a series of bipartisan research on Walmart Moms.]

And the Southern primaries and caucuses in early march are really gonna foul up the numbers. Gingrich will take the deep states, because those folks are not gonna vote for a Catholic or Mormon. Louisiana though will be interesting between Gingrich and Santorum. And lets see how much pull Falwell and Pat Robertson still have in Virginia.

The republican party has a quandary. How to appeal to a broad base of Americans that they seek to subvert at nearly every turn. How does the party sell the fact that they are responsible for nearly half a century of undermining, prostituting and betraying hard working Americans? How do they make a U.S. Pluocracy, at the expense of the majority of the population, look appealing ? Beyond pandering promises, disinformation, out and out lies, voter fraud and disenfranchisement, I just don't know.
What I do know is that we all have to take a close, hard look at our candidates, on every level, local, state and national, and determine if they are the candidate of ALEC, Koch Industries, unregulated greed, and unfettered capitalism on steroids, or if they are the candidate that will work with the American people to restore a Democracy that we can all live and thrive in.

The overiding number from the poll Obama 51 Romney 45 was culled from 1000 adults, not likely voters as most polls are. Secondly, ABC/WaPo are not releasing their breakdown of Dem/Repubs/Ind as most polls usually do. ABC has been pummelled before on the ridiculously high number of Dems polled, so this time they just skipped it altogether.
Anyone getting giddy/depressed over this poll should chill out......

I initially supported Romney in his political career, including his 2002 MA Governor's race. However, as I followed him and saw that he changed positions to suit his political ambitions, abandoned his own state and then didn't even bother to run for re-election, I realized what a fraud he was. In 2008, his vacillations and about-faces just confirmed this assessment. Now he has completely absorbed teabagger rhetoric to win the nomination. I'd say Romney would sell his soul to win, but I'm sure he sold that long ago.

I think that there are more reasons for not liking Mitt for both his chameleon character or arrogant attitudes than the 59 in his economic policy plan.

How can anyone like Mittens?

Seriously, before you can like someone you have to know something about them that is likeable and all we really know about Mitt is that his position on issues is ever-changing, he mistreats his dog, doesn't care about poor people and is a Mormon.

Nothing to like about the the first three and I don't care about his or any other candidate's imaginary friend.

I have the same opinion about the disaster in the White House.

Bush left in 2009. Since then, Obama has righted the economy, began rebuilding jobs, destroyed Al Qaeda, and ended Bush's 2 interminable war. The only disaster was Bush, who presided over 9/11, two recessions and Katrina.

The good old evangelical club is not voting for a Massachusetts Mormon no matter what shape he tries to contort himself into.

And they will vote for a "Muslim Socialist"?

Obama is neither a Muslim nor a Socialist, and he got the most popular votes in US history in 2008.
