iPad DJ's New Video Composed on iPad, Shot and Edited Entirely on iPhone 4

Posted: 07/01/10 12:21 PM ET

A few months ago, Rana Sobhany made waves as the world's first iPad DJ. Now, she's back with Solace a brand new video shot and edited entirely on the iPhone 4, with music composed and produced on the iPad.

Playful and electro-poppy, Solace is essentially the world's first all-mobile music video, with no computer used in the production process at all.

The video was shot the day the iPhone 4 came out -- Rana spent 9 grueling hours waiting in line at the Apple store, then went straight to production. She used two apps to create it -- AKAI's SynthStation and Sound Trends' Looptastic.

What makes the effort particularly fascinating is that it exemplifies the blurring definition of "mobile." Once merely a communication technology, these devices are now small but powerful portable computers with the kind of creative capacity that really lowers the barrier of entry for production, offering creators an entirely new platform for self-expression. The idea of using devices that fit in a desk drawer to do what roomfuls of studio equipment were required to do merely a few years ago is one of those sign-of-the-times moments that really gives you pause as it fast-forwards to the future.

Please stop calling her a DJ. You can call her a producer, but not a DJ

does the iPad play videos like that (the three faces playing, then being wiped to the next) or does the iPhone 4 have some sort of video compositing app?

dunno about the first one, but I don't see any technical obstacle; and yes to the second:
Apple announced (and demoed) iMovie for the iPhone 4 at its launch.

Why is this news? If someone were to make music using a new kind of forced air filter no one would hear of it.

Oh, wait. It involves Apple. Question answered.

The music was rather tired and repetitious, but the concept was imaginative and well executed. Impressive effort.
