One of the funniest Web series in ages has an all-new episode. Drag Queens Reading Obituaries, the brainchild of comedian Mike Kelton and produced by Amey Goerlich, an eight-part Web series with probably the most self-explanatory title ever, features eight hilarious drag queens reading real obituaries.
"This all started from a tweet," Kelton told me in an interview. "I thought to myself, 'Wouldn't drag queens reading obituaries be the funniest Web series in the world?' I tweeted it, sent it out into the world, and the response was overwhelming. So many people retweeted it and responded, so I decided to move forward with my idea."
Kelton teamed up with Goerlich, Jarvis Derrell and Kahve Coffee in Hell's Kitchen, New York City, to produce the series. Together they called drag queens and asked if they wanted to be a part of it.
"These ladies are absolutely hilarious, and all so unique!" Kelton told me. "So many people are doing Web series about an upper-middle-class girl living in Brooklyn while navigating dating life in New York. I wanted to do something short and weird, something that people could quickly watch at work and have a good laugh."
Short they are. Each episode of Drag Queens Reading Obituaries clocks in at 2 minutes or less. And don't worry: Kelton and company have made sure that the last names of the dead are kept anonymous.
"We don't want to offend anyone, even thought it just may happen," Kelton said. "We want to celebrate their lives. And what better way to do that than to have a drag queen read your obituary?"
New episodes of Drag Queens Reading Obituaries debut every Wednesday at 10 a.m. ET (or sometimes at 11 a.m. ET, because these people are running on drag-queen time). New episodes continue every Wednesday until Christmas.
"I think for Season 2, we're going to do Drag Queens Reading Bible Verses, but we'll have to cross that bridge when we get to it, God willing!" Kelton remarked.
