CNN's Rapid Decline and the Future of Cable News

What's Your Reaction:

The cable news wars continue unabated with Fox News Channel holding a wide dominance in viewership over its rivals. But in the last several months a surprising development has occurred, as one-time upstart MSNBC has overtaken long-time stalwart CNN behind Fox. MSNBC's rise and Fox News Channel's strength, coupled with CNN's precipitous fall speaks well to pervasive trends in news gathering and the challenges that media outlets face in remaining viable in today's more hard-charging, opinion-centric world.

Fox News
has had an impressive run of success. With its stable of incendiary hosts including Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck, Fox has not just built up a fiercely loyal audience of conservative viewers, but in the process it has redefined how news and media are disseminated in this country. Whether you like it or can't stand it, Fox News Channel under owner Rupert Murdoch and executive Roger Ailes has transformed the coverage of news into a brutal contact sport.

Clear opinion is now a must, particularly in primetime programming, but more importantly, the delivery of news on Fox is ceaselessly and viscerally sharp-edged with an underlying tone of right-leaning snarkiness. This model, once renegade, is now standard and has played a critical role in remaking the national media landscape.

MSNBC has tried to emulate Fox's approach, albeit from the opposite political direction. With loudly liberal hosts like Keith Olberman, Rachel Maddow, and Ed Schultz, MSNBC is trying to replicate the Fox blueprint, and this maneuver has already borne fruit: last year, MSNBC largely overtook CNN in the primetime ratings, and in the first quarter of 2010 it further solidified its standing as the number two cable news network while CNN has collapsed.

The growth of Fox, and to a lesser extent MSNBC has major implications for CNN and the need for it to radically reshape its focus.

While its critics might contend otherwise, CNN is defined by vanilla programming and a markedly detached style, particularly in political and domestic affairs. Its biggest names including Wolf Blitzer, Campbell Brown, Anderson Cooper, and Larry King host more nitty-gritty, dry affairs, and their shows are sleepier than their competitors, and frankly, a bit dull.

And viewers seem to agree: the New York Times is reporting that CNN's top hosts lost approximately half of their viewers in the last year, and CNN now finds itself behind its competitors in primetime - where advertising revenue is most lucrative. For their part, Cooper and King lost over 40 percent of their audiences in the first quarter of 2010. CNN is even finding itself threatened by traditionally smaller networks like HLN and CNBC.

CNN has failed to adapt to the opinion-dominated trends which Fox created and MSNBC has embraced. The recent addition by CNN of Erick Erickson, a prominent biting right wing blogger, may signal a change in direction towards more opinionated programming for the channel, but CNN executives are reportedly still steadfast in their commitment to having primetime hosts deliver material without a partisan point of view.

This is a major mistake. The current strength of both Fox and MSNBC is due in large part to the networks carving out loyal audiences for themselves: the right to Fox and the left to MSNBC, with CNN flailing because of an inability to pick a side and grab that crucial audience share.

But these reasons cover only half the story. In today's world, tone matters as much as substance or even political tact, and therein lies the challenge for CNN: whether to take on a more hard-hitting, in your-face-approach that Fox, MSNBC, and a host of Internet platforms have adopted with gusto.

And indeed, just as CNN has been hurt by the focus of its industry competitors, so too have newspapers been hindered by a collective inability to change. Yet, while many periodicals have been badly - and in many cases mortally - hurt by a marked refusal to more rapidly technologically advance themselves and better use the Internet, papers are also being held back by their clinging to the time-cherished model of American newspapers that they must be scrupulously balanced and even-handed in their approach. Like CNN, newspapers risk becoming completely irrelevant if they fail to appreciate the need for a sharper, even more clearly political center.

It is no accident that Rupert Murdoch comes from abroad and has been so wildly successful as a media baron in the United Kingdom . In England, newspapers and media are deeply cutting in their coverage and have long fallen into clear political camps. For example, readers of The Guardian know they are getting a left-leaning paper, while patrons of The Times - another Murdoch broadsheet - know their paper has right-ward views. Fox News Channel has taken the same approach: you may not subscribe to it, but what you see is what you get; all nuance is cast aside.

Unquestionably, American audiences have moved closer to the British model in their tastes, as exhibited by the growing popularity of Fox News Channel and MSNBC. As more people get their news exclusively from cable, outlets like CNN and many newspapers could find themselves extinct if they fail to change in adapt, both in substance and in tone.

CNN could keep their "non partisan" stance if they added some content and context to their stories. Empty headed talking heads who don't comprehend the topic they are covering is one of the reasons CNN chased me away.

CNN is not "non partisan". Many of their talking heads repeat the same talking points that the Republicans gave Fox News that day. CNN then reports those talking points as FACTS. They never analyze the talking points for level of truth or proof.

CNN's promotion of some hatemongers (Lou Dobbs and John King) were the final straw.

I only watch CNN when nothing else is on (MSNBC really needs some decent weekend content) or Fareed Zakaria and Christine Amanpour are on. Fareed Zakaria and Christine Amanpour are the only ones on CNN that bother to go indepth into a news topic. I might not always agree with them, but they at least cover a story or concept by analyzing it.

I like Rachel Maddow of MSNBC because she often brings in real researched facts to back up her opinions. She is very good at pointing out hypocracy without being offensive.

On CNN, a person could contradict themselves in the same sentence and no one would call them out for it.

As a conservative, I remember telling my liberal freind professor that the Internet was going to be bigger than the printing press. He said I was crazy.

I urge you to embrace change as we conservatives consistently do. Also get ready for Nov.

Cable news is the worst thing that ever happened to TV, to politics, and to news. It is tawdry entertainment based on the news, pretending to be news, but devoid of news. Unfortunately, TV ratings increase as quality decreases—go figure—so the race to the bottom will continue and cable news will only get worse, and people will be even less informed. Don't watch.

CNN still beats the whiners on PMSNBC daily. So I predict PMSNBC fails before CNN does.

Oh, and since FOXNEWS beats both combined on every time slot on every day, they will be around forever!!

To win an audience on cable TV news means a to dominate a demographic that is 54 plus, low inclome, low education and unwilling to change brands. It may make for interesting conversation but it is without significance to advertisers and the general public. Without a growing base of viewers or revenues, it may make noise now but mathamatically, you have already lost. I guess you should enjoy it while you can. I remember liking Soupy Sales in his day too.

I find myself spending a lot of time at FactCheck.com lately. They do help me keep score. So far, accordiong to my count, It looks to me like Faux news lies or misleads about 2/3 of the time when discussing progressive issues and MSNBC tells the truth about 2/3 of the time when discussing NutWing conservative issues. I shall continue to check.

What is so great about America is the fact that people still have the freedom to watch and support the media they choose.

Evidently, most people feel that MSNBC and CNN are not fair and balanced in their reporting.

...But, have heart! Obama is making us buy insurance, he might also force us to watch liberal news station; or at least make the taxpayers support those station so the liberal population can get their daily dose of lies and spin.
04:08 PM on 04/04/2010
MOST PEOPLE FEEL MSNBC are NOT FAIR and BALANCED? You mean people who watch FOX are the only people getting fair and balanced news? Really?

I think your fallacious assumption is typical for a Fox News watcher. I would say most people don't watch Fox News or any cable news. Check out the actual viewership versus the U.S. Population and I think, I think... you might just find the number of people who watch cable news are a very small percentage of all Americans. People watch cable news to hear more discussion about their beliefs, or to get the spin on news from their beliefs. OR worse, to decide how to feel about something. Maybe the last reason is the most prevalent one.

As for your last assumption it's remarkable you form your opinions from a company whose founder and driver of focus isn't even an American. If you are anti-immigration how can you take your positions from an Aussie? Do you think Murdoch gives a rats behind about you? No, he's in it for the money and he's found that his minions can spew his venom and because they are white and noisy you follow along like lemmings. Sort of like AH, not even German and probably half Jewish but the German followed him to the bitter end

Yes, what is so great about America is that they can choose which version of reality they like best.

I just hope news media can regain it's political equilibrium. As it is now, people are only reinforcing their own biases.

The problem with CNN is that they don't do real journalism. At all. They never point out misinformation because that would be "taking a side" and is therefore partisan. They should just call both sides out on their crap in a sharp, confrontational style and establish themselves as the channel for the independents.

CNN does have a bias and their failure to be honest about it works to their disadvantage. Of course, they have the most boring on-air talent, if you could call them that - campbell brown, as well. The right is taken, go the for the middle or the left.

CNN never challenge lier and state what the real facts are , leaving one not kowing what the real facts are.
MSNBC The rising stars provide indept analysist and research that can be checked and verfied, MSNBC undestands reporting facts comes first .
FOX NEWS Most reporting the news has no formal educations, are really not aware that news only matters when facts are reported, Fox is not a real news channel, it's entertainment for the hillbilly half of the country.

You article is nothing but extremely biased opinion put forth support the conclusion you want rather than explore what is really going on in the news marketplace. Maybe CNN lost so many of its viewers because it has failed to continue providing the good, reliable, unbiased, hard hitting news coverage that made it successful under Ted Turner. Ever since he sold it, CNN has been sliding steadily down the abyss of bullshit media. Sure, it could try to become another Fox or MSNBC and fight over that section of the viewer audience or, gadzooks!, it could go back to its roots and get back all of us who no longer watch any TV news (free or cable) because it ALL sucks. OPINION IS NOT NEWS AND IT IS NOT WHAT WE WANT. People like you have destroyed the news media and should be hung by your gonads.
10:53 AM on 04/03/2010
I disagree, just because your competitors play in the mud and throw dirt you should the same too. That's what is being advocated and it's a further dumbing down of american people. I remember the days when CNN was the shining star bringing news that you could believe in - where's Ted Turner, give him back his cable station. Not everyone wants this rapid fire sticker bumper garbage opinionated sound bits masquerading as news. It should be called 'he said, she said' junk speak.
CNN should go in a different direction adding more legislation indepth discussions not so much political discussions, current day news events, lots of history. There is a channel on Canadian Broadcast that does an excellent job weaving current news and history. People have a thirst for knowledge and want to be educated so they can understand what is happening in government and business that impact their lives.
Praise be given to Murdock and Ailes for creating a massive entertaiment machine masquerading as news using vile, gutter-like tactics marketing on the base instincts of people while their fellow co-harts loot and steal everything not nailed down. Their viewers are wide eyed, low information voters, enraptured waiting for the 'rapture end times' to come. And this is what CNN want to mimic, please...

Your article shows exactly why Fox does so well. Your article is totally slanted in its analysis. To read this at face value, one would come away with the impression that MSNBC ratings went up and CNN went down. The facts, never presented in your article by the way, are that both channels suffered major declines on viewership and only fox inceased viewership, by a lot. CNN just dropped faster than MSNBC allowing them to take over second place.

Also, you describe MSNBC hosts as "loudly liberal hosts like Keith Olberman, Rachel Maddow, and Ed Schultz" yet describe Fox's hosts as "stable of incendiary hosts including Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Glenn Beck. I would say Olbermann is at least as incendiary as any of the Fox hosts and NEVER has an opposing view on his show, unlike Fox that almost always has an opposing view.

You should write for the New York Times, you would fit right in.

CNN lost it when they failed to stand up to right wingers during the run up to the Iraq invasion . They acted like cowards during the Bush administration , scared to tell the truth because they might offend conservatives .
04:43 AM on 04/03/2010
I find it hard to believe that people are not interested in actual news any more . I could care less about some partisan opinion , I want the facts so that I can make up my own mind . Since when has opinion started passing for actual information ? What education or experience does Glenn Beck or Sean Hannity have that would make serious minded people care what they think about anything ? When opinions count more than facts , reality will lose out and actual informed Americans will become a thing of the past . This will be when we lose our democracy .

Fact is you just don't like people having opinions that are different than yours. The American people are far smarter than most think. What they think, you needn't control.
02:43 PM on 04/07/2010
I don't like it when people have opinions that are not based on facts . While Americans are smarter than they are given credit for , it is impossible to make an informed opinion when you can not get the facts . The media more and more does not hand out facts .
