Molly Jenson and the House Concert Phenomenon

When we released Molly Jenson's debut album, "Maybe Tomorrow," in March, one of the first things we did was get her on the road, opening for a new act named Fiction Family, comprised of Jon Foreman of the rock band Switchfoot and Sean Watkins of the bluegrass band Nickel Creek. This fall she'll open across the U.S. for another band, WPA, comprised of Watkins and Glen Philips, the singer of the '90's band, Toad The Wet Sprocket.

But in between those gigs, Molly has discovered something very interesting: She's on the road on a multi-state tour playing in her fan's living rooms in a tour essentially booked by her fans. We have seen the democratization of many forms of media, but according to articles like these and others, we are now witnessing something very interesting happening as more and more artists skip the middlemen, booking agencies and large venues, and play directly for their fans in their homes.

I attended my first home concert last year at my friend Adam's home. Adam has been a huge fan of the singer Bill Mallonee, former lead singer of the band Vigilantes of Love, so he did what any fan would do: he called Bill and invited him to play at his house and Bill said yes. Adam provided chips and drinks and Bill brought his guitar and played in Adam's living room for 30 or so of Adam's friends. The transaction differs depending on the artist-some charge $10 and attendees are encouraged to buy a CD and the artist walks away with money that doesn't pass through the hands of a booking agent and the fans get a chance to hear their favorite artist in an intimate setting and hang out with them a bit.

Molly loves people, so she's having a blast, and to prove it, sent in this update of her life on the road on the tour she's dubbed the No Place Like Home Tour.
