7 Not-So-Overrated Things (PHOTOS)

Posted: 08/23/11 02:41 AM ET

It's been over a year since "Overrated: The 50 Most Overhyped Things in History" was published by Perigee in New York, and even longer since the Australian edition. Since then, I've been churning out extra lists of overrated and overhyped things and people for "The Huffington Post" - and many people have disagreed with some of my selection. As open-mindedness is not overrated, here are some things that, after due consideration, deserve second thoughts. (And no, "Sergeant Pepper" is not on this list - so if you think it should be, too bad!) Also, check out my newly relaunched site, http://overrated.markjuddery.com/!

"Titanic"
1 of 8
This one became outdated almost as soon as the book was printed. With all this talk about it being "the all time box-office champion," I named it the most overrated modern movie. But it no longer "owns" that dubious box-office record. James Cameron outdid himself with his next film, "Avatar," which overtook "Titanic" as... the most overhyped film in history. For the record, when adjusted for inflation (and let's not pretend that there is any fairer way to judge box-office), "Titanic" is at #6 (having narrowly overtaken "Jaws") and "Avatar" is way, way, way, way down in #14. So "Titanic" is still overrated, just as overrated as it used to be. In fact, it's not even the most overrated James Cameron movie! Of course, with reports that Cameron is making a 3D print for the centenary of the sinking next year, "Titanic" might yet move a few more notches up the list...

Sgt. Pepper is NOT over-rated. I still disagree heartily with that, and the fact that many, many people agree with me, means that he is probably very wrong. He might not like it, but that doesn't make it over-rated.

Ulysses is a great story. I really don't like Blazes Boylan, but I not supposed to.

Spinach is not overrated. It was invented to annoy children and has succeeded brilliantly in that role.

"Titanic" is tops on the over-rated list for sure, but leave my spinach alone!! I would think only walabis would view a kangaroo as over-rated.

Always eat a can of leaf spinach and a steak before giving blood. Sends that iron test right through the roof.

I like spinach, both in salad and cooked. As to conspiracy theories, they almost all require that you use a null hypothesis to prove them wrong.

I really like Titanic. And spinach. And kangaroos are just too cute. And who doesn't love Google.com? I would probably spell most things wrong without it. I also happen to be quite a skeptical person nowadays because when I was younger, I quite the gullible person. I completely agree about the Oscars, though I do like to know the winners. I guess I am just an overrated person.

Overrated Thing #8: Mark Juddery

Keeps flogging a stillborn horse about how certain things are "overrated" (such as a TV show that didn't become popular until it was successfully canceled and syndicated).

Regarding Titanic, I'd say what prevented that movie from being FAR less successful was the soundtrack/music. It came on cable once, and I watched it with no sound for a bit. You notice some of the mediocrity at that point. The most powerful scenes are, not coincidentally, with plenty music in the background. The other thing that helped was simply the subject matter. Had it been a completely fictional tale and not loosely based on fact, it would not have been as marketable.

It missed the mark historically. Remember when one of them flipped a Roosevelt dime? And how could the paintings by up and coming artists have been famous if they went down with the ship? I knew it would be bad when DiCaprio's character said "loogy".

Spinach, skepticism and kangaroos are not appreciated enough. And I never thought I'd talk mention all three in the same sentence, ever.

Sometimes, when you lose something (like an Oscar) you learn to truly appreciate kangaroos. - my motivational message
