How dare they?
How dare people who are careless enough to get cancer -- or Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, AIDS, leukemia, heart disease, multiple sclerosis or other illnesses that give them the excuse to stop working -- have the temerity to think they can burden us decent, law-abiding, God-fearing, tax-paying, gun-toting Americans with their petty problems?!
I mean get real.
The essence of our great country is that we are not a land of communism, socialism or other namby-pamby systems that inflict so-called "fairness" and "equality" on our nation. If God had intended America to be "fair" or "equal", then he would not have permitted slavery and segregation under our constitution. Just because a few liberal politicians and activist judges subsequently enacted some amendments to the original constitution that permitted these so-called "improvements" - doesn't make them or any other changes to the wisdom of our Founding Fathers correct.
So it is with all this foul nonsense about health-care.
Where in the constitution does it say anything about having to provide health-care to a bunch of unhealthy deadbeats? Nowhere!
God and Jesus Christ - who are both fine, upstanding All-American types last time I checked -- were very clear in what they wanted America to be. A CAPITALIST nation. Survival of the fittest. That's the American Way.
And we are also a nation of choice. If people choose to get ill and lounge around at home or in hospitals rather than going to work like decent people -- then that is their choice. But they cannot seriously expect honest tax-payers like us to subsidize their choice.
If you want health-care -- buy it! This isn't the Soviet Union or China where some heart-on-the-sleeve nanny is going to come along and help you because you didn't work hard enough or keep yourself healthy.
Don't like it? Tough cheese buddy! If you really don't like it -- move to Canada or Cuba where that kind of cry-baby stuff is doled out. But don't litter up America with your communistic whining!
Worst of all -- some people have the nerve to suggest that it is the responsibility of health insurance companies to cover everybody! And of drug companies to subsidize sickly citizens!
Last time I checked -- this was a proud capitalist country. Founded on the principles of the great Adam Smith. We are all about making money -- not nursing a bunch of malingerers and malcontents. Corporations don't exist to provide charity to the Great Unwashed!
Corporations have just one responsibility -- and that is to make absolutely the very largest profits possible for the shareholders. Nothing else remotely matters. This is an honorable creed fully endorsed by both Jesus Christ and God. It is even written in the bible. "And lo -- there shall come a great profit unto the land..."
See. Nothing there about wet-nursing the poor and lazy.
And when the noble President Richard Nixon very wisely ushered in the present-day health care system in the early 1970s -- he did it the American Way. He put decent, honest insurance companies and drug corporations in charge. It's a free-for-all. Not a Free For All!
And the evidence that he did the right thing is crystal clear. Those companies are making record profits! If it was the wrong thing to do -- then those companies would be failing and running at a loss.
But those companies prove that we Americans know how to keep things healthy.
Looking for health all you pinkoes? Start with FISCAL health. If all those cancer and heart patients would just pull their finger out and emulate the drug and insurance companies -- instead of whining all the time -- they'd be a lot better off!
So enough of this foolish talk about "public option" and "health-care reform"!
Let's keep health-care just as it is.
Anything else is clearly selfish and un-American...

Issues about which i have strong opinions: HEALTH CARE REFORM takes pride of place. It's too important a subject to dilute one's efforts on anything else I see it as the beginning of the REAL American dream, not the NIGHTMARE that it's become.
With financial health worries lifted. the very nature of people would change. Remember, Joshua marched the Israelites round the desert for 40 years to rid them of the vices and vicissitudes acquired as slaves.
My observations tells me people don't have much time to think, always under pressure, living lives of quiet desperation. But there's an innate desire for betterment.
FREEDOM? Americans will be freer when they can move aound, change jobs, travel. WITHOUT losing health benefits. DEMOCRACY? It works when people are well informed. ARE THEY? No country in Europe would tolerate the likes of GLEN BECK, RUSH LIMBAUGH, BILL O'REILLY AND ALL THOSE SCREAMING LUNATICS ON THE RADIO TRYING TO FORM PUBLIC OPINION.
Barak Obama has a complete mandate to institute health care reform. So why all this debate now? I'll tell you why, He's got REACTIONARIES running scared. They're using lies, deception, unbelievable scare tactics, helped by the rightwing media. He must be steadfast HE MUST PASS HARD AND FAST LAWS. No one fights harder to protect privilege than the privileged themselves. They'll use whatever means possible. They know from European experience that once tasted HEALTHCARE REFORM can never be repealed. Woe betide any European politicial party that campaigned against existing health services.
Is it just me (and probably I've just missed other, smarter folks observing this), but is it ironic that the people who dislike intensely Darwin & evolution have no problem with 'survival of the fittest'?
Funny...but sadly...I really think that is what THEY believe. I don't think they'll get the satire.
I have been waiting for Colbert to do this so thank you for finally saying what it is that seems to be on conning minds. Bravo.
Martin, well done. And all of your points have actually been written by Republican posters. Thanks for the compendium.
When you are tired and sick...
you allow people to look after you...
perhaps to your detriment...
allowing you to become tireder and sicker (I practiced it for you, apparently, last night to show what its like)
and APATHETIC...
which people, themselves, never are...
without help.
It can make you sicker...
and cause you to release your hold on life.
The satire comment reminded me of my new pen name
that just popped into my head this morning...
as I washed the basement floor
and thought about getting back to writing poetry and drawing political cartoons...
The IV League
(intravenous...we are all this side of cancer in the 20 hundreds, anyway...I was thinking yesterday about how many people I know who came out of college and used their actual degree for their job...I was one of the ONLY ones...and I'm not doing it anymore either...another odd fact of life we might want to explore...for the sake of our own children...or we could ignore it...and carry on...mindlessly)
(By the end of my ...what if scenario, last night...I was childless, homeless, jobless...and could no longer define where my back started or ended...or my backbone)
Jesus...healing the sick and lame...
separation of state
Chewel has a song about being Tangled...
The IV League is going to have songs about Untangling.
With slight modification to eliminate all signs of humor this post is headed for the right wing viral email circuit. I know a lot of folks that believe this crap.
I think I'll forward it, just as it is, to all the people who have forwarded me right wing-nut material. Then I'll just wait to see how many of them fail to get the humor and praise me. It should be a fun weekend.
Terrifying!
It is a long held Christian belief that pestilence is God's wrath upon sinners. Fire, brimstone, floods, the plagues were all sent by God because of man's sinfulness. America is "God's country". We, the faithful, really are the "chosen people". The faithful will prosper and the rest wont. Any real Republican will tell you so and as soon as the rest of the planet gets with the program the better off they will be. Till then, they just better be wary because with God on our side, we can do no wrong.
Yeah, God didn't send pestilence, disease, malnutrition, war, natural disasters down on mankind just so mankind could overcome these by doing the right things to mitigate and conquer them. We should all do nothing and let God's wrath kill us all off. Isn't that what you fundamentalists believe? If so, please stand in line first to die ahead of all of us who are trying to overcome these challenges no matter from where they come. And I for one am not a "sinner," don't believe in your vengefull God and don't accept your religious solutions to mankind's problems. Again, if you want to die go ahead but I for one will do all I can to combat and conquer these scourges on mankind. And one last thing, keep your f--king religious beliefs out of my gov't.
It is scary to write something intended to be completely over the top sarcasm and have it mistaken for something serious from a rightwing crackpot, but that is where America is. I am sorry to have given such a misconception. I absolutely condemn such nincompoopery as expressed in my previous post. It is terrifying to consider such idiocy is credible. Unfortunately, there are significant numbers of people who subscribe to such assininities.
P.S. I don't believe in magic or ghosts.
Um...ok...that was in the OLD TESTAMENT. Jesus' words are in the NEW TESTAMENT. Jesus'' (you know the basis of Christianity) said his father was benevolent. Just saying....
BTW...your post was a joke right?
It's getting so, I can't tell anymore.
Being somewhat to the left of liberal, I sometimes write what, I think, is dripping with sarcasm. These days, more and more often, others can't tell and mistake me for being a serious crackpot from the right. I am a long time supporter of a great big government run socialized medical system since I grew up in one courtesy of the United States Department Of Defense.
The baby Jeebus weeps at the mere thought of a public option!
Indeed. Jesus sneered at the thought of healing the sick and lame. For "free," no less! Like some leper could just go somewhere and get cured or something, and not have to pay his fair share for the service!
Jesus wasn't no commie!
Now that we have that settled, let's talk about social security... Jesus clearly believed that distributing free bread and wine (and seafood, fergawdssake!) to poor people was creeping socialism.
Yes, and Jesus celebrated the well-to-do among us snatching our coins back from the collection box at the last second as we wondered if our donations would go to someone who didn't "deserve" it.
And always remember to carry a questionnaire with you. To run through, with the person who is about to pull you out of the river. Just to ensure they are not someone prepared to do something, without a guarantee of reward.
Martin you are an ignorant TWIT with no idea about sickness or needs.
Ummmm......ever heard of satire?
Apparently we were meant to eat our kids.
In balanceo's defense....it IS getting hard to tell who is joking and who is serious these days.
I mean I thought this one is obvious....but there are so many who say these things who are serious.
For some reason "Keep your government hands off my medicare"...comes to mind.
After hearing that....I too, get confused!
The sad thing is, you have simply repeated what I read and hear from the right, word for word. It's brilliant yet sad, because one hears exactly, I mean exactly, the same language, quite literally, down to the Bible stuff.
I often like to counter with words about the bit in The Wealth of Nations that talks about a well functioning welfare state being essential to capitalism--the bit the "Adam Smith Institute" et al. choose to ignore. Oh, and his other book, The Theory of Moral Sentiments, which is an ethics based on, gasp, empathy! And it's one of President Obama's favorites!
Very true..i have heard this almost word for word from more than a few people before...it took me a while to realize they were being serious...i thought it was satire..and was actually laughing along!...that's why when i read this i kept thinking...maybe he's being serious?
Well said! Those who rant incessantly about people who cannot afford health care and therefore should not have it because they are obviously less worthy, may one day have themselves or one of their family members befallen by one of the critical illnesses you mentioned. Glass towers will topple and lightening may strike. Beware those stones which are thrown, you mighty warriors.
Great post. I, too, am very concerned about the top twenty drug and health insurance executives who earned $285 million in 2008.
PER HOUR PAY FOR DRUG AND HEALTH INSURANCE EXECUTIVES: (short list)
Miles White - Abbott - $17,395
Fred Hassan - Schering-Plough - $15,677
Bill Weldon - Johnson & Johnson - $13,022
Ron Williams - Aetna - $12,656
H. Edward Hanway - CIGNA - $6,373
Angela Braly - WellPoint - $5,127
Oh those poor people. Imagining trying to live on that pittance!
Obviously, they are living as God and Jesus and the American Founders with their slaves intended, and they have been rewarded for their ... their ... what do you call it?
Rapaciousness?
As much as no one wants to, and no one willl admit this, I've heard just as much of this kind of talk from Progressives as I have from Conservatives, all of whom are absolutely convinced that no one ever does or ever will be diagnosed with a critical or chronic disease as the ones you list.
And if they DID believe they are succeptable to those diseases, and they are, they just deny it, then more people would be concerned with care at any cost, instead of simply lowering the cost of the 3rd tier Health Care that we are receiving
You speak the truth.
Am I the only one who is shocked and, frankly, ashamed that NO ONE has mentioned the $5B that Obama has given in grants to the NIH for medical research?
Finally someone somewhere is listening to me and it goes unmentioned
