Karl Rove Will Be Your Graduation Speaker

Imagine you're a high school senior, or the parent of one. Imagine that the principal of your school -- or the headmaster, if it's a prep school, a renowned century-old elite New England boarding school, say, that sends its graduates to all the best colleges -- announces that the commencement speaker this June is going to be "somebody who has dedicated a significant portion of his life to service, and has been an extremely influential person," someone who "played a vital role in the major policy decisions made during the Bush Presidency." Somebody named Karl Rove.

Imagine how you'd feel.

I suppose you're supposed to feel grateful that Jack Abramoff isn't available.

Scooter Libby, Alberto Gonzales, Donald Rumsfeld, Harriet Miers and Paul Wolfowitz also fit Choate Headmaster Ed Shanahan's description of Karl Rove's credentials for inspiring the class of '08, but I guess Rove, what with his Newsweek column and all, is a bigger get.

The job of a commencement speaker, explained Choate's head to his community, is "someone [who] comes in with a message for graduating students about the world that they are about to engage in." In Rove's case, you don't have to wait until June to figure out his message about the world; all you have to do is tote up the principles that have long guided his career:

No rule of law. No checks and balances. No transparency. No civil liberties. No fair elections. No oversight. No accountability. No common ground. No prisoners. No retreat. No surrender.

With an inspirational yet practical message like that, Choate's graduates will doubtless have a huge advantage, should they choose to pursue a career in Washington, or perhaps the private sector.

What Headmaster Shanahan didn't count on, though, was the courage of the editorial board of Choate's student newspaper. In an editorial about the Rove selection, they pointed out that at Choate's commencement two years ago, Mr. Shanahan himself

"lamented how 'responsibility to others and for oneself has been all but forgotten in certain circles.' Mr. Shanahan alluded to various public figures who have been exposed for scandalous activities, noting that in spite of their lack of ethics and sense of responsibility they were all found to be 'not guilty.' At that Commencement Mr. Shanahan posed a very important and pressing question: 'How can so many moral, ethical and legal laws be broken and still no one is guilty, no one assumes public responsibility for having chosen to do wrong?'"

You've been nailed, dude.

A man who blew the cover of a CIA secret agent and gamed the First Amendment in order to punish a patriotic whistleblower who revealed a lie in the president's State of the Union address, a lie moreover that was being used as a principal basis for launching a preemptive war: a public servant with those values might well be the perfect choice to send off into the real world the graduating class at the Vladimir Putin Institute for Leadership or the Ken Lay School of Management, but at a high school whose motto is Fidelitas et Integritas? Not so much.

This ain't about PC. The Choate News editorial had no problem with Rove coming to campus to give a special address; the more freedom of speech, the better. But the task of a graduation speaker, as they pointed out, is to "bring the community together," not to split it into anguished and angry factions. Karl Rove was the principal architect of George W. Bush's demonization of gays and of Iraq war dissenters, and he was the framer of its Orwellian branding: "A Uniter, Not a Divider." It's sad that Choate will offer its reputation and podium as a laundry for Karl Rove's legacy. But in an age when cable news networks scramble to sign up as "analysts" boldfaced names like Tom DeLay, G. Gordon Liddy, Ralph Reed, Bill Bennett and Dick Morris, I guess it shouldn't be surprising when marquee value trumps moral values. Maybe that's the real "message for graduating students about the world that they are about to engage in" that our sons and daughters are intended to learn from the man I have the high privilege and distinct honor to present to the graduates and families of the Class of '08 -- ladies and gentlemen, faculty and alumni, please join me in giving a warm welcome to a distinguished American public servant, Mr. Karl Christian Rove.

The message that people like Shanahan is sending is simple: War Criminals and amoral svengali's should be heralded, not derided. Rather than prosecute them, we should give them money to continue to spread their message of ugh-liness. How embarrassing for this faltering experiment in (little "d")emocracy. For anyone who wants to express their outrage, here's the email address for Choate: communications@choate.edu. I recommended that they rent "Bush's Brain," but you may have, er, better suggestions...

To deal with the likes of Rove, I suggest the students of Choat follow the lead of other elite instutions of learning. 1. Throw food 2. Shout him down 3. Create an atmosphere that causes security concerns for Mr. Rove's safety.

Living in CT, not too far from Choate, most around here think it's kind of strange to choose Rove as a speaker. CT being a blue state, most people just can't stand him. Weird choice. The students should silently protest by standing and putting their backs to him. Something that's done at colleges sometimes.

Tried to send the young ladies and gentz a supportive e-mail,but apparently the online student newspaper has no e-mail links.

Kinda in the hermtically-sealed upper class prep school tradition, sadly.

But nevertheless, good for them, and I hope they get enough support to can blubberbutt from the graduation.

All of these rethugs are criminals and should be in Prison. unless We hold them accountable for their crimes, it will only get worse.

Kaplan..you're totally off base. "Revealing a CIA secret agent"? #1--I believe he had nothing to do with it as proven in a court of law.#2--Plame was not "secret" or "covert" and her husband was blabbing about at cocktail parties. #3--His yellow cake info was wrong intentionally because he was anti Bush. How can you say the Rove and Bush are demonizing Gays? Where? What proff? Because they don't believe in Gay marriges? That is demonizing? Commentary like yours that is twisted and not factual is what feeds the anti-American attitudes around the world. Outsiders read such commentary as this and have nothing else to weigh against due to the fact the liberal media is also anti-Bush. Irresponsible.

How sad for these students to see the institution they are graduating from is guided by a headmaster with such a broken moral compass. Parents and students alike should protest this invitation to Mr. Rove. It's not a free speech issue- he has plenty of forums to air his views- why should students wishing to celebrate their graduation with their peers be forced to do so as a captive audience to this sociopath, and in doing so give him the appearance of legitimacy by being a civil and attentive assemblage? They should find a more suitable speaker, and then allow Mr.Rove to give his address in a designated "free speech zone" a mile off campus.

A very effective response to having Karl Rove as the guest speaker would be TOTAL SILENCE. Every student assembled should sit bolt upright, facing forward in silence for the entire speech.
No applause.
No dutiful chuckles at his lame attempts at humour.
And certainly no applause at the conclusion.
There would be no catcalls, no whistles of derision.
There would be only..................crickets.

Rove's latest book:

"How to Trash an Empire in 7 Quick Years"

He turned the agencies of government Americans pay to protect their interests (including the Justice Department) into fundraising centers for and Weapons of the Republican Party.

In January of 2001 he announced the Republican strategy for taking over our government for quote: "The next 100 years" by fighting the War on "Terra" against nation states. This was days before Mr. Bush rolled out his "Axis of Evil" and then went after the first 1 on the list. What would you do in the mean time if you were on such a list.

He stole the elections of the College Republicans shorty after his mentally ill mother killed herself.

Sounds like a very bad seed.

Ed Shanahan was at my university as dean/advisor. He was hated by the student body and the faculty alike. He was a sanctimonious pig then. And he is now. Period.

A round of applause for the youngsters who wrote that editorial. Its good to see them standing by principles, and for taking their Headmaster to task for saying one thing and doing another.

I hope some of this year's graduates boycott the graduation ceremony, or better yet, attend and then moon Karl Rove after they get their diplomas. Or maybe heckle and boo him, interrupting his speech. I know, this sounds very rude, and in most cases I would agree, but this detestable, plug ugly human greasespot deserves no respect or even common courtesy. Then again, it wouldn't be fair to the graduates or thier parents to make graduation too much of a fiasco.

That is exactly what we did when Imelda Marcos was picked to speak to our graduating class. I missed my graduation.

TLV (See profile | I'm a fan of TLV)
Seriously? That's weird!

Since a lot of people boycotted the graduation ceremonies, they filled up the place with army people. Those who protested during her introduction or even snickered were picked up, sent to jail for a couple of days and made to take out weeds in the park or street dividers.

I hope he speaks and people throw tomatoes at him, and boo and hiss him. The students need to let him know how history will really depict him. Unlike his usual crowd full of toadies and shills, some of the students in this audience, actually know how to use their brains.

Gee, I don't know, Marty.

For a chronic chubster it really is quite a cutie, this blossom of the fabled Turd plant.

Maybe Choate asked Karl (he who dropped out of college) Rove to speak because Bill O'Reilly was unavailable?

Excellent post!
And, why do Americans tolerate "analysts" on the msm like Reed, DeLay, Bennett, et al?
Because Americans are lazy, stupid and shallow.

I interviewed for an admissions job at Choate in the 80s. The director's office was chock full of "Etruscan artifacts" (real or fake? Now I have to wonder), and he derided my experiences in a much less prestigious private school: "Choate isn't the X school, you know." Not long after that "60 Minutes" revealed that the minority students that Choate in its magnaminity had accepted to their ivied halls were being used as drug runners by the students who PAID their transportation to Columbia to buy their drugs. The poor minority students, of course, were the ones to get sent to jail. Choate and Karl Rove deserve each other in my opinion.

Rotten eggs, absolutely!

When is this commencement and how can I get there?

Hopefully, the obstruction of justice charges will be served before this graduation.

In my opinion, in choosing Rove as a graduation speaker, Choate has lost its moral compass. Rove engineered Bush/Cheney stealing two elections.
