The Truths Rove Told

While it's tempting to truth-squad the lies and smears that Karl Rove's been spreading during his infamy lap, let's focus instead on the truths.

Sure, it's natural to want to focus on the disinformation he's still retailing (like, Joe Wilson lied in his New York Times op-ed), but it's hardly surprising that the mother of all talking points realizes he can keep getting away with the Big Lie as long as journalists remain too musk-awed to follow up. Yes, it's seductive to speculate about the politics of his seven-point attack on Hillary Clinton's health care record (is it a typical Rovian assault on her strength in order to hurt her? a reverse psychology triple-Lutz to hurt Obama?), and perfectly understandable to want to psychoanalyze his referring to Sen. Clinton as "this woman." But instead of deconstructing his deceptions and psyching out his psy-ops, let's look at the truths he told.

On Meet the Press, Rove told David Gregory that Republicans lost control of the House in 2006 because of only 85,000 votes out of 82 million cast, and that they lost control of the Senate because of only 3,562 votes out of 60 million cast. (Rove could also have pointed out, but didn't, that Bush might have lost the White House in 2004 if 59,300 Ohioans had voted the other way, and he might have never had won the Electoral College in the first place if all of Florida's popular votes votes had actually been recounted.) This is, to be sure, The New Math; Rove's Old Math had Republicans holding Congress in 2006, but what's a little revisionism among pols.

Rove's keen awareness of the minuscule margins in recent elections is, of course, what led to his attempts to rig the voting pool, from demanding that US Attorneys file fraudulent indictments, to "caging" and then intimidating voters at the polls. But what does The Math mean to us? What does it mean for American democracy that something like one tenth of one percentage point of the electorate decides whether we sacrifice even more lives in a senseless war, or tolerate even further erosion of our civil liberties, or continue to entrust the Constitution to right-wing theocrats and delusional empire builders?

Yes, I know that the Democratic Congress elected in 2006 has too often failed the spine test, and I realize that even a filibuster- and veto-proof Democratic Congress, coupled with a Democratic White House, is no guarantee that the bond market, the blue dogs, the triangulators, the corporate lobbyists, the DLC, the Lieberman corner, and the "bipartisan" let-bygones-be-bygones commentariat caucus won't have their tentacles all over the inheritors of a decisive 2008 victory. Nor does it mean that the right-wing echo chamber will be any less ferocious in its attacks, nor that the old media will be any less supine in its admiration for propaganda techniques proven effective long ago by fascists. But short of a third party victory, which I don't think is in the cards, or violent revolution, which I hope is not on the horizon, the only way to change the country's direction is to decisively beat The Math in which half the country doesn't vote, and in which rural voters are disproportionately powerful.

So how to get a Murdoch- and McConnell-proof victory? My money is on turnout -- especially on efforts to register young people, like DeclareYourself.com. At the end of Rove's Meet the Press stint, Gregory showed a clip of young Karl leading the College Republicans for Nixon charge in 1972. "It was a fun time," Rove told Gregory, reflecting on the period others recall as Watergate and Vietnam. Rove's goal in 1972, as he said in the clip, was to get 18- to 21-year-old Americans to register. His strategy: train others in that same age group to convince their peers to get in the game. "You can't get a 35-year-old to get a young person to register," he said in 1972; "young people have got to reach other young people."

I'm guessing Rove was right then, and right now. But here's the problem: Young people are the least well-informed of all American cohorts. This year, when the Pew Center polled Americans about their basic knowledge of government, politics and current events, the group that scored worst -- the ones who flunked most egregiously -- were aged 18 to 29. It's comforting that a New York Times poll says that this same age group is decisively Democratic, but I can't help worrying that their underlying lack of civic knowledge makes them sitting ducks for whatever the Limbaugh-Coulter-Malkin machine throws at them in 2008.

You have to know what the Constitution says in order to realize that Rove is lying when he says, as he did this past weekend, that Congressional oversight of the Executive Branch is unconstitutional. You have to know that Iraq contains Sunnis and Shiia at war with one another in order to recognize that Rove's claim on Meet the Press that "9/11 changed everything" does not change the 15 centuries of intra-Islamic strife that created the shooting gallery into which Rove's President keeps sending Americans to die.

It's not enough to support, as 62 percent of young Americans do, a universal, government-sponsored national health care insurance program. They also need to care at least as much about voting for the next American President as about voting for the next American Idol. They need to know the difference between the characters Fred Thompson played in the movies and on TV, and the character he displayed as a Washington lobbyist. They need to know the difference between the 9/11 bullhorn bullshit of Bush and Giuliani, and the neocon counter-terrorism crusaders whose signal achievement has been uniting and inflaming the Muslim world against us.

Like Rove, I think young people can best convince other young people to register. Like Rove, I believe that a sliver of strategically-placed voters can make a huge difference in the outcome of the next election. And like Rove, I think the election can be "a fun time," too. Just not for him.

And don't get me started on Diebold.

Once before I die I would love to see a political party that was more interested in making our nation better rather than trying to defeat the opposition. I would like to see the return of a nation that responds to John Kennedy's words, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but rather what you can do for your country." I would like to see leaders who can make our nation whole again. I would like to see politicians who believe in the sovereignty of these great United States.

for a long while i thought everything that bush said was a lie. for god sakes - he ran for president as
"the uniter."

but through time and speculation i realize that was the only truth he uttered - i think it was a rove strategy to use those words. and in the end they have come to be true.
though, unintentionally.

he has (bush), united the world in hating america. he is: THE UNITER!

mostly, he has united america with the rest of the world in hating america and him. congratulations! way to go!

stupid and president can lead to a world of trouble. welcome to the world of trouble.

I think that the Independents need to rally up and form a 3rd independent party that can provide representation for other points of view than those advanced by the DNC/GOP mafia. Yes, mafia, because, at the end of the day, it's all a 'family' of sorts, that will not do anything like reform federal spending, provide better public transparency, or even do anything remotely like thinking out of the proverbial box in other than the most superficial fashion.

Which party is honestly for balancing the budget? Ending welfare? Really cleaning up the tax code? Bona-fide national energy independence? Scandals, side-shows, but not a lot of hard-core progress, the Iraq war has been a HUGE money-maker for em, democrat AND republican, and for that matter, that label's pretty easily changed, doesn't really mean a whole lot.

Rove's a joke, good riddance there, the Iraq war needs to be ended, and public oversight and accountability needs to be reinstituted.

Tired of Republican lies about Iraq. Go to the Aug. 19 issue of NYT, an article in the op-ed section titled "The War as We Saw It."
Written by 7 soldiers of the 82nd Airborne, sounds like it could have come out of Vietnam. Basically, they say that we are wasting our soldiers blood in Iraq, because it is the Iraqi army and police that are killing our soldiers. Waiting for them to step up to the plate? Forget it, it'll never happen.

You've got it just right, Mr. Kaplan, and I just clicked your name to "add to favorite blogger list" (in fact, the first time I've done so -- and that was *before* I read your bio). I am wondering, have you read Larry Flynt's book about why he keeps outing hypocritical GOP pols who go out of their way to push family values and trounce on pro-choice and pro-gay people even as they sneak off to brothels and engage in extramarital affairs? Say what you wish about Flynt, but his book is much in line with what you write, and he's the first person to call to my attention the fact that so many people around Dubya are old Nixon cronies. Remember, the guy who said, "I am not a crook"? Well, when Rummy says he had no knowledge of the cover up of a football star's death by friendly fire, how can anyone in their right mind actually believe him? All of these louts are liars and crooks.

Just because someone wants something to be true doesn't mean it will become true. Also, just because someone wants something to be a lie doesn't mean it's false. The Catholic Church wanted the earth to be at the center of the universe and burned people at the stake for supporting the truth. They couldn't make the earth what they thought it was. Neville Chamberlain wanted to believe there would be peace in our time because Hitler agreed to it. The paper he waved around couldn't prevent WW II and the millions of deaths. Evidence must support what a person believes because believing lies can't create evidence to support the lies. That only happens with propaganda which I call lies that people want to believe.

It astonishes me that seemingly no one is interested in pushing for voter rights. Is too difficult to imagine that it can be accomplished? Is it such a remote possibility that it could become issue in the coming election?

Looking for the truth nuggets under the volume of his lies, from Karl Rove, would be equivalent to finding an undigested kernal of corn in a pile of pig sh*t.

Not only isn't the corn kernal worth the effort, you smell of pig sh*t just looking for it.

Rove has the rest of his life to realize he mistimed his retirement, a wise man would have left while he was still a winner, Rove waited too long, and therefore he's destined to be remembered as a loser.

Can't agree more. I think the MSM really fell asleep at the switch on all things Rove here, and this weekend, from what I saw, here they again, were letting this lying S.O.S. AGAIN pull the wool over their eyes. No THANKS. We cannot have this man and his idiot W. outta the Oval office FAST enough.

Been a 'fan' of Rove ever since he played with the press in the vandalism / damage to the White House by Clinton's staff after the 2000 election.
Worked the American press for the saps they are and remain. That is why Karl smirks; he knows the press has helped him every step of the way.
And now with his exit and all the hype the press has taken their collective eye off the ball again: US soldiers die everyday in Iraq for oil and to help the Bush/Chaney administration avoid a recession, which the next president will inherit.
Good job Karl, what a slimy American you are

Its not over until the fat lady sings!!!

So, who's the fat lady????

Why is it that his view on people is so negative and one sided? He is a con artist of con artist!

I can only hope that with new information has come to light about him regarding the financing of the GOP using tax dollars puts him in jail!

Why not start on Diebold, Marty? I realize that that tag line wasn't to be taken seriously, but the problem with Diebold is a major part of the problem with getting people out to vote. I sat here in Ohio and watched the election get stolen. The difference between tallies for Bush and Kerry was a lot more than 59,000-odd votes. The discrepancy in some counties---lost votes, miscounted votes, disputed votes---was almost that much. The election was rigged, pure and simple. It wasn't just coincidence that Diebold's CEO at the time (in North Canton, Ohio) vowed to deliver as many votes as he could to Bush. So why would our young people be chomping at the bit to go out and vote, when it's clear that their votes may be stolen or erased? When the evidence shows that the machines can easily be hacked, and a vote for Kerry changed to a vote for Bush? It won't matter how many people come out to vote, if the results can be manipulated.

Harry Truman's Civil Rights record was NOT "moderate." Truman integrated the Armed Services by executive order in 1949. He proposed an FEEC - Federal Equal Employment Commission. Harry also proposed a universal health plan, and a health plan for seniors.
When LBJ got Medicare passed, he went to Independence, MO so Harry could participate in the signing! Unlike the present day puny Imposter, Harry Truman was a true "Giant." Read some history, please.

Rove issued more propaganda units in a couple of hours on a Sunday than a month of the old Soviet Pravda and Tass News Agency combined.

That explains his receiving American Fascist Mind Magazine's Man of the Year.

Totalitarianism in it's purest form.

Check this out. It's going to be great when this democratic debate nonsense is over and the REAL debates start. Hillary will have to answer for her illegal activities of the last 20 years. That will be fun to watch!!
