In just the last year, 22 courts have overturned state bans on marriage equality. And with numerous upcoming hearings, that number is likely to climb into the 30s within a few weeks.

That's particularly significant because deadlines for petitioning the U.S. Supreme Court are rapidly approaching. The court's next session begins in October.

Last week a Kentucky judge ruled that the state's ban was unconstitutional, with decisions in other states expected to come this month. Rulings are due in Florida, Virginia and Oklahoma.

In addition, eight other states will have hearings before appellate courts. Those include Michigan, Nevada, Idaho, Hawaii and more. If the courts rule swiftly enough, those cases could all arrive at the Supreme Court in time for its next session.
