Reboot Illinois Polls Offer Insights Into 2014 State Races

Democratic state Sen. Michael Frerichs is trailing behind Republican state Rep. Tom Cross in the Illinois treasurer's race by only 1 percentage point in a new Reboot Illinois/We Ask America poll. In three previous Reboot Illinois polls, Frerichs was behind Cross by 7, 11 and 6 percentage points.

About 40 percent of likely Illinois voter respondents said they would vote for Cross if the election were today, and about 39 percent said they would vote for Frerichs. Almost 6 percent said they would vote for Libertarian candidate Matthew Skopek and 15 percent said they were still undecided.

"The Treasurer's race has fluctuated a bit, though Republican Tom Cross has never trailed in our polls," said We Ask America Chief Operating Officer Gregg Durham. "But Democrat Michael Frerichs has closed the gap a bit, and this is anyone's race."

The Illinois U.S. Senate race is much less up in the air. Incumbent Democratic Sen. Dick Durbin had a 13-point lead over his Republican challenger state Sen. Jim Oberweis.

Oberweis, a Republican state senator from Sugar Grove, had a better showing among Chicago and Cook County voters than in a Reboot Illinois poll a month ago, but he also lost ground to Durbin among respondents in the five collar counties and downstate. Libertarian candidate Sharon Hansen was the choice of 4 percent of respondents, with 6 percent undecided.
