Last year when my good friend Anna Wintour, editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine, with the help of Mayor Bloomberg and many others, thought up Fashion's Night Out, I thought it was such a fresh and brilliant idea.
We all know that the fashion industry has taken a huge hit with the down turn in the economy. Last year, Fashion's Night Out succeeded in becoming a unique event that celebrated fashion with a global initiative designed to both promote retail and restore consumer confidence. Fashion's Night Out 2009 took flight and we were all delighted with the level of participation and support that took place. The spirit and unity that radiated throughout the city that night was magnificent! New York City already has its doors open to all of us, but Fashion's Night Out opened them wider. Walking around last year, hearing the music blaring, seeing the ecstatic people pouring out of the stores and lining the streets demonstrated that the message of Fashion's Night Out was ringing loud and clear to hundreds of thousands. It was a sad year for the fashion world as many stores were forced to close and the sudden death of one of the most influential designers of all time, my friend Alexander McQueen, but, like the phoenix from the ashes, the fashion industry, as always, continues to move forward, reinventing creativity, and surviving the times.
Now tonight, we can happily and confidently celebrate the 2010 edition of Fashion's Night Out! This evening promises to be even more epic, splurge inspiring and full of stylish surprises! For me, one of these exciting surprises is that this year I was given the opportunity to participate! I can't wait! It is an honor to be joining forces with QVC and several of my friends all over the world, all of whom are working to make this night happen. Together we are able to showcase the world of fashion in a fun and innovative way. This night is truly about carefree shopping, where you can "shop for something good".
