Chicken Nuggets and Family Values

Posted: 07/18/2012 6:57 pm

I have one fast food weakness -- an eight-pack of chicken nuggets in a white and red box. I could go years and never crave a fast food burger, but I'll admit I have a deep kinship with Chick-fil-A's version of fast food. As a kid growing up (Christian) in the south, Chick-fil-A has always been part of the good food I loved. They donated free sandwich coupons to our church fundraisers, and as a teenager I attended community prayer breakfasts that met at our local Chick-fil-A. True story: I've even dressed as a cow to get free food.

But today, we're parting ways. For the past few months, I have been following the news that Chick-fil-A donates money to groups such as Marriage & Family Foundation, Exodus International and the Family Research Council. These groups and others have contributed extensively to the religious hate speech that marginalizes lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. They have spoken out against civil rights for LGBT individuals and have even discouraged anti-bullying campaigns that seek to prevent LGBT teens from taking their own lives.

I'm not one to rush to a boycott. I recognize that many of the places I eat have unjust practices. Even when I cook in my own kitchen, I have little knowledge of whether or not those who grew, harvested and packed our food were paid a fair wage for their work. Beyond buying a label that says "organic," I have little information about whether the process of growing my food hurt or healed the earth.

But we are what we eat -- isn't that what they say? And as it turns out, I can't eat hate. Over our breakfast of fair-trade coffee and organic fruit this morning, my husband and I read Dan Cathy's latest anti-gay comments in The Huffington Post. In talking about the article, we both admitted we'd felt guilty every time we popped into Chick-fil-A for nuggets or that delicious cookies and cream shake. But we knew what we needed to do. As people who grew up in the churches that fueled this dehumanizing anti-gay rhetoric, we've stomached enough hate for a lifetime.

As I read where Dan Cathy talked about the "the biblical definition of the family unit," I couldn't help but think of the teenage girl in Louisville, Ky., who was beaten by a group of adults who shouted anti-gay slurs as they broke her jaw the day after his comments. Unfortunately, the "biblical definition of the family unit" that Cathy speaks of would not seek justice for this girl. After all, those who were considered an "abomination" could be stoned for their lack of conformity to the patriarchal norm. Did I mention that the place where this teenage girl was beaten was in front of two churches? Words have consequences, and the words that some churches have been speaking are still creating an atmosphere where violence can be justified. The consequences of our words are coming back to our doorsteps to call us to account.

As cited in HuffPost, when Dan Cathy was asked by Baptist Press about his company's support of the "traditional family," he replied, "Guilty as charged." Like Cathy, churches that speak hate through exclusion are "guilty as charged" for the violence we incite. By promoting (or simply ignoring) speech that marginalizes people -- any people -- we deny that we are all made in the image of God, deserving of human dignity and human rights -- no matter who we are (or aren't) having sex with.

As a kid, I not only loved Chick-fil-A's nuggets, but I also loved that Christian values shaped their business. I loved that they hung out a sign to say they were closed on Sundays. I still believe that, as people of faith, we are called to live out our faith in whatever work we are called to do. But hate is not a Christian value. Jesus, who never married, did not come to marginalize people but to proclaim justice. Perhaps Dan and his family will understand. I'm hanging out my sign. I won't eat at Chick-fil-A on any day of the week because I can no longer be part of these contributions that fund hate. Words have consequences. I don't want to be "guilty as charged."

I have a 1-year-old daughter who also loves her chicken nuggets. Unfortunately, if Chick-fil-A continues to donate money to groups who speak violence against LGBT individuals and their families, then she will not grow up with same love for this food that my husband and I had as children. A small sacrifice, I guess. I just hope she grows into a world where hate crimes become uncommon, where people are not beaten in a church's front yard for being different, for being queer.

Throughout the Christian church's history, food has always been a sacred space of sharing. The common religious ritual that forms both liberal and conservative churches is communion -- the act of taking part in the table of Christ. Willingness to participate in the life of Christ -- willingness to drink the cup and taste the bread -- has always been the signifier of our faith, not our sexuality. I teach ethics, and during a recent class the subject of homosexuality came up. When some students began to cite the biblical reasons against homosexuality, another student felt marginalized by the discussion. She said, "I'm glad to hear everyone's voice, I'm glad that as a church we can come to the table, but I can't come to the table if people are throwing food at me." The violence is not only at our doorsteps, but at our altars as well.

On my daily commute to work, the only Chick-fil-A in the city is 10 feet away from my subway stop. To leave the train and walk the one block to my office means I will pass Chick-fil-A each day. But now, instead of stopping in for a chicken biscuit and coffee, I'll keep walking and say a prayer for peace. I'll pray that love will conquer hate, that justice will roll down like waters and that I'll have the strength to keep on walking.

Please tell me what the correlation is between "the biblical definition of the family unit" and the teenage girl in Louisville, Ky., who was beaten by a group of adults who shouted anti-gay slurs as they broke her jaw the day. The article is filled with unrelated nonsense like this.

Note to self, don't ever encourage my philosophy students to attend graduate school at Loyola University's Institute of Pastoral Studies. If the reasoning skills in this article are representative of the faculty there, the students are better off somewhere else (and this article was written by the Graduate Program Director no less!). Melissa, do yourself and your students a favour--go to your local community college and take a basic class in logic (or critical thinking if you can't handle that).

Ms Brown, thanks for a very good article, I hope your sacrifice to won't be in vain. Maybe one day Mr Cathy will have a change of heart. I'm still hoping my jehovah witness parents will come around and accept their gay son. I've been waiting 30 years, but I still have hope, LOL
05:45 PM on 08/06/2012
Are you also waiting for Jehovah God to to come around and change his stance on homosexuality that is clearly outlined in the Bible.
Is it reasonable for us to expect our creator to change what he deems right and wrong to satisfy the desires of his creation?
Do we as parents change the rules in our household because our children tell us what they think is right? Of course not.
It seems very logical to me... but it might not seem logical to someone that is living in opposition to God's requirements. I can see how the arrogance of that person may feel that they know more than God.

By "Biblical definition" ALL Christians are called to defend others, to seek justice, and to love all people... even if the people are Christian or not, straight or gay, male or female, and to forgive those who aren't worthy of forgiveness (which is basically all of us). Any Christian who did not rush to the defense of this girl has no idea what it means to be a Christian. What ever happened to the directive to love your enemies and do good to those who hate you? Hard words to grasp, even harder to live.

The only anger Jesus ever exhibited was toward the religious hypocrites of his day. Are not all these who insult and injure homosexuals guilty of the same hypocrisy? Why are Christians not outraged when those who claim the name of Christ act in the very ways that Christ came to change?

no one is going to change anyones mind, in here. bigotry is big in America. Jesus is used as an excuse. No one should bow down to anyone. not that you are, in here, it's bowing down. Why? They think they own this page, as if Jesus was with them. If Jesus was here now, some folks would get slapped or whipped like he did do the hypocrites of his day, the powerful religious leaders. Yes, he showed violence, according to the gossip of the day was, he whipped those men silly. They were made angry, so they ploted to kill him. So, the gossip of the day was. Karma is better than 2 wives

I am not going to say that I know all that there is to know about this situation, Chik-Fil-A and what they support, or what incidences have occurred due to the comments made by Dan Cathy. All I know is what I have heard from friends who are reliable resources and what I have seen in a couple articles like this.

What I do know is that, as a Christian minister and Bible-is-the-Truth believer, we are COMMANDED to hold fast to the Scripture and speak "Truth" to everyone with correction and rebuke with compassion (2 Timothy 4:2). As for Dan Cathy's statements, they may have been "without compassion" towards anyone who is in a situation other than the "Scriptural" view of marriage, but he WAS right in "speaking the Truth" about what the Bible says about what marriage and family SHOULD be. The fact is, we should boldly proclaim that a sin "IS A SIN", but also say that we AND GOD love them just as they are (LOVE the sinner, HATE the sin). That is how God views it, READ THE BIBLE. He is constantly HATING sin and LOVING the sinners (ALL of us).

My family and I don't cherish any memories of fast food. But we do cherish memories of Grandma's baked macaroni and Dad's oyster dressing and roast beef po-boys.

For us to boycott Chick-Fil-A means we'd have to start going there in the first place, then stop.

To me, all of this is a distraction from Romney not releasing his TAX RETURNS!!!
03:09 PM on 07/30/2012
I hope Romney has made gazillions of dollars and got every legal tax break he could. It is a non issue for most of us. I don't make a lot of money. I don't think he is cheating me out of anything. NOPE. Why do you people try to make it a story? I believe it is people like you that try to distract from what a horrible president we have.

I want a successful businessman in office, not a community organizer who is a crooked Chicago politician.

Obama cannot even come close to what he promised in his campaign. He is not transparent, he is not a healing force for our nation, he DOES NOT UNITE....HE DIVIDES. It is so obvious too....He does not evoke hope and change........It's deception and more of the same dirty politics.

To Romney....."do NOT release your returns. Please don't. The liberal leftie media will just play political hot potato with them so they can DISTRACT the masses from what really matters....the economy."

And for this Chik-Fil_A stuff.......Free Speech is for EVERYONE not just politically correct ones....

Since when is it a hate crime to support traditional marriage? And why do we act all surprised when a business that is Christian owned, and closed on Sunday, comes out against gay-marriage? Homosexuality is a sin. Why do we try to make God out to be tolerant? He is NOT a tolerant God, and Christians aren't called to be tolerant people. We are called to follow the Bible, just like Muslims are called to follow the Koran and Jew the Torah, etc. Why is Christianity the only religion people feel they have the right to "bend" or "change" to suit their own beliefs? If a Christian owns a business, he can run it in any way he sees fit, that's the American law. He isn't the only Christian business owner who feels this way, he just was the one who got reprimanded for speaking his beliefs.

Read a little deeper. What Christians are called to do is LOVE ONE ANOTHER. And supporting and encouraging violence against people who are homosexuals is NOT loving...in any way.
10:45 AM on 08/01/2012
Did I miss the WHOLE story? Where did violence come into the equation??

PLEASE EDUCATE ME.

Who is encouraging violence? People have the right to express their opiinions just as you have the right to hold opposing views and chik fil a. You read a little deeper, please.

I don't see where this business supports groups that encourage violence.

But this is the type of "journalism" one comes to expect on the internet; one attempting to push agenda with specious association, i.e. "Oh, you're family's half German? You must be a Nazi!!"

At the core of the issue is that people supporting the very "hateful" idea of marriage as a union of one man and one woman are the ones speaking truth in love. Others are simply pushing a distortion of reality.

Chik-Fil-A gives money to any number of hate groups, including one that wrote and pushed and supported Uganda's 'kill the gays' legislation.

I think you have a lot to learn about Christian love and compassion.
01:32 PM on 09/08/2012
Greg, is there some empirical proof to what you are implying? I will eagerly await some evidence of your slanderous claim. I think you have quite a bit to learn about the difference between "hate" and the historical Christian view on sex and community.

It sickens me that as a "woman of faith", you assume that since one supports the traditional meaning of marriage, that we are "haters".

The whole, if you're not for me you're against me, RDICULOUS mentality.

Ironically, you're showing Chik0fil-a/Dan Cathy the hate and discrimitination for HIS beliefs that you say he is giving to the homosexual community.

The picture of hypocrisy.

Isn't discrimination a form of hate? Sorry, but by denying someone their rights you are hating.
09:49 AM on 08/02/2012
"Isn't discrimination a form of hate?" No not really. There are many forms of discrimination. For a simple example, guys don't have the right to use the women's public restroom. It doesn't mean the government hates guys. They have the right to use the restroom, but there is a certain room they have to go to.
04:14 PM on 07/26/2012
The violence happened in front of two churches. Jeff McCarty, the Pastor of St. James Church said hearing about the beating makes him sad, "How sorry I am that this happened anywhere but, especially in front of our church family," he told WAVE 3 News.

I ate at Chick-fil-A yesterday. I may even eat there today after reading this article. I am also a supporter for the traditional family and family values. Does that make me a Gay hater? No. I really don't care what two consenting adults do. I believe that a child should be nutured by a mother and a father.... this coming from someone whose parents divorced when I was at a young age and whose parents knew nothing about family values. And, my own marriage ended in divorce. I knew I could not be both the mother and father, no one person can. And, I believe that children need the balance of a mother and a father. Unfortunately, I did not have this nor my children. That is what I believe. If you don't agree, I will not consider you a HATER just someone with a difference of opinion/belief.

Have you even bothered to take the time to learn about the organizations that Chick-fil-A sends millions of there income to?
12:30 PM on 07/30/2012
Have you bothered? You have little insight into who Chick-fil-a is and stands for. Chick-fil-a has helped thousands of homeless, disabled and needy children. They have sent a number of ambassadors of the "serve model" to countries such as China and Lebanon to mention two. They provide jobs and benefits to thousands nationwide and many of those employees are provided education benefits to further their education. You are one-sided and in the minority in America and it pisses you off, we get it. However, calling people liars and calling their actions hateful only serves to show and perpetuate your ignorance.
03:17 PM on 07/30/2012
Hey! I have never eaten there either...

But I will go try it now. Not because I am against gay people but as an American, I will go there in support of FREE SPEECH.

Don't ya just love when free speech is only for those that are politically correct!
06:32 PM on 08/04/2012
I'm also for free speech! He can speak all he wants! I can not give him money all I want!

This writer has used all the rhetoric intended to shut down discussion and stereotype Christians who respect God's Word as true and submit to its authority. Hate, judging, bullying. There are so many images used to paint Christians by one brush. Just because you stand for truth, does not mean that you are hating gays. It is a great tension to love our gay friends and neighbors without adding or subtracting to what God says in His Word. And we are called to do both, whether you choose to respect those who believe differently than you or not.

My question is have they ever turned away a qualified gay applicant simply because the person was or seemed to be gay? My guess is yes. If so, they should be prosecuted.
