Helpful Hints: Breastfeeding and the Environment

  • Fact: If moms in the US breastfeed for one year these resources would be saved:
  • 2.5 million pounds of paper
    2.5 million pounds of metal
27 million gallons of milk requiring 465 million pounds of dairy feed
6 million gallons of oil for production, transportation & refrigeration
135 million pounds of carbon dioxide produced by the use of those 6 million gallons of oil

  • Tip: Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeed infants for the first 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Benefit: Moms who breastfeed get more rest, there is no preparation or clean up.
  • Myth: Breastfeeding takes more time then bottle-feeding.
