I haven't had many good laughs during the past few weeks. Since April 20th, I've been working alongside Sierra Club volunteers across the country to make sure that BP is held accountable for the catastrophic disaster in the Gulf. But I had to pause today for a good long laugh when I heard that Rush Limbaugh suggested that the Sierra Club should pay the bill for BP's "leak."
According to Rush, the Sierra Club and other "greeniacs" forced BP to drill far offshore. Well, let me just say to all you dittoheads out there: If you believe that, then I've got a Bridge to Nowhere to sell you.
Sure, I understand that supporters of "Drill, Baby Drill" are now in the uncomfortable position of watching this disaster make a mockery of their mantra. And I know from years of working to protect the environment that Big Oil and its allies will try every conceivable tactic to keep our country addicted to oil. But no one can deny the consequences of our dependence on fossil fuels. And no one can deny who's responsible for the recklessness that led to this disaster.
We can't let Rush Limbaugh or anyone else distract us from the truth. BP is to blame for the disaster playing out before us, and BP must pay.
But Rush is right about one thing: The Sierra Club needs to do its part. We're working hard to support the communities in the Gulf. We're working hard to keep BP accountable. And we're working hard to move this country to a clean energy future. Want to help us, Rush? You can make a donation here.

to get America moving by foot, bike, or sharing actually sharing their own vehicles and carpooling
when will you get real and do something instead of watching yourself on television
On the other hand, only complete idiots forget that Limbaugh is anything other than the single highest paid entertainer on earth. Sadly, there seems to be more than enough of these fools so that he continues to be vastly overpaid all of the way until the absolute sunset of his career.
If it comes to pass, let's hope the Sierra Club will accelerate validation and development of revolutionary technologies that are just beginning to emerge.
Hard to Believe Alternatives and The Brooklyn Project at; http://www.aesopinstitute.org discuss a few of the possibilities.
There are new ideas and technologies moving forward in several countries.
The science is new and difficult to accept.
But, independent labs are increasingly involved and practical applications are en-route. The National Labs have begun to pay attention.
As we can see by the catastrophe in the Gulf, fossil fuels threaten to sharply impact life on earth much more quickly than is generally realized. See Worst Case Scenario on the Aesop website.
Another hit will be oil prices, which could exceed $100 per barrel in a matter of months. That can abort economic recovery.
One barrel of ordinary water can replace 200 barrels of oil. A gallon or two might power a hybrid car 1,000 miles.
The oil cataclysm is an alarm clock!
Time to accelerate the development of breakthrough alternatives as rapidly as is humanly possible!
A 24/7 development program is ready to be born. It does not take much to sharply accelerate the birth!
Algae has been researched in US universities for over 35 years. It's time to move it out of the lab and go into commercial-scale production. Algaepreneurs are starting to build commercial-scale plants throughout the US using all off-the-shelf existing technologies. More algae production plants are coming online. Algae is one solution to get the US off of foreign oil and create new jobs right here in the US. The algae industry is being built today by Americans who all want to get off foreign oil.
To learn more about the fast-track commercialization of the industry, you may want to check out the National Algae Association.
After Pearl Harbor was attacked, within months FORD's Willow Run plant completed a bomber every 59 minutes. What is needed now is much simpler, but effective action is needed, without delay!
Now that the oil may enter the Atlantic, a scientist suggests: "constructing a long, floating boom between Key West and Cuba, in an eastward-pointing, V-shaped weir, the natural current flow can be enlisted to funnel the petroleum to a central collection point where it can be captured, loaded aboard tankers, and shipped to the nearest refinery.
Once the efficacy of this technique is established, other booms can be constructed to direct petroleum farther out in the Gulf toward the Straits of Florida for collection. The booms can be maintained by a flotilla of fishing craft and pleasure craft. The weir should be made collapsible so that it can be taken in and redeployed as hurricanes move through the area. Naturally, the Straits of Florida will need to be closed to shipping."
We are facing national and planetary emergencies that need to be addressed by very strong leadership, as in wartime. The lives of millions appear to be at stake!
incorrect. you have heard of algae blooms? it causes many dead areas in lakes and oceans.
