Herman Cain's (and the GOP's) Confusion About Black Voters

Posted: 10/ 4/2011 9:35 am

Herman Cain recently gave voice to a tired narrative Republicans offer to explain the Grand Old Party's pathetic performance with Black voters that is as absurd as the notion that he will win his party's presidential nomination. Mr. Cain stated in an interview on CNN's Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer that "many African Americans have been brainwashed into not being open-minded, not even considering a conservative point of view." This is a decades-old canard that does not hold up to scrutiny and, worse, shows that Republicans, including Mr. Cain, do not understand Black political behavior.

I interviewed dozens of Black Republican activists when researching my book Republicans and the Black Vote and a majority of them cited some form of the notion that Black people were "brainwashed," "forced," or otherwise "tricked" into not voting Republican. It goes something like this: Black liberals like Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, among others, have some mystical, magical mind-control over Black people. These untrustworthy leaders have used their powers for evil, convincing Black people that conservative public policy preferences would hurt Black interests. They, through their white liberal patrons, keep their thumbs on Black voters to keep them beholden to the Democrats.

This, of course, ignores decades of conservative political symbols and policies that have demonized African Americans, undermined Black progress, and repressed Black political participation. It ignores the hostility in some corners of today's Republican Party toward African Americans. From dismantling federal civil rights enforcement to opposing or vetoing civil rights legislation and from racist incarceration policies to "welfare queens" and from economic policies that encourage the movement overseas of blue collar jobs to opposing increases in the minimum wage, conservatives have almost always been on the other side of the street from Black people. This is not brainwashing. It is an honest assessment of an ideology, practiced by a political party, that is antithetical to the interests of most African Americans.

Black voters are were they have always been: center, center-left. They were with the Republicans when the GOP fought for their interests. They stayed where they were and watched the GOP move away from its long held policy positions. African Americans have been far from brainwashed about the Republicans and, more specifically, conservative ideology. If anything, Black voters have been remarkably consistent: As both parties have shifted positions, it is Black voters who have remained constant. If you give Black voters a reason to support you, Mr. Cain, then I am sure they will. Given where you stand now, however, I'm not optimistic you will get more than token support.

For too long, conservatives have blamed Black leaders for Republican failures with Black voters. Herman Cain's view suggests that looking inward is something the Republicans are unable, or unwilling, to do. As former U.S. Representative J.C. Watts told me, Republicans simply "don't get it" on race. And the notion of mind-control just doesn't wash.

Democrats always tell the black voter you are a victim of circumstances beyond your control. They placate the black voter with this "victim" mentality and if you vote for us - you can sit back and get the hand-outs you deserve for how unfairly you've been treated.
Anytime a black person says you need to work hard and make it on your own i.e. Herman Cain, Bill Cosby, etc...they are seen as "Uncle Toms" and "They just don't get it".
BLACK VOTERS...YOU HAVE BEEN GETTING PLAYED BY OBAMA! He has no interest in helping you. He became president so he can retire with a $400k per year pension, get courtside tickets to the Knicks for the rest of his life, sit on 8-10 executive boards for big companies paying him $250k apiece per year to do nothing, and write four more books for $8,000,000 per book. He'll care about you up until election night and then you're history.
If you want your kids to be proud of someone - read Herman Cain's life story and listen to his message...I dare you.

Independent analysis has shown that once background is taken into account as a control, private school children are not any more educated than public school children and private schools get to pick and choose. Face it, the time for "state's rights" and vouchers in education is over; those systems have failed. It's time to pursue a national policy built upon social mantling funding and stop this stupid notion of perpetuating inequality for its own sake. That isn't reality, it's a long time cultural human flaw that can be corrected without communism or any other such bogeyman.

Because Herman Cain is a Black American, he don't has to have the same views and opinion of other Black American leaders. Black Americans Have voted 85% Democrat for the last 70 years. Known we find our selve failing and all area in quality of life in American. Maybe it time to look at what the other side can offer. Majority of Black voters don't know political issues or voting records of the Democrats that they vote for, They are simply told to vote for the name next to the "D".

I do not support Herman Cain even though I am a registered republican. He is a NEOCON and will continue the wars and erosion of civil liberties
Obama ( Though I think the The Fed Reserve/MIC has threatened Obama in some way)
may not really be in control..consider WHY we voted for Obama
I voted for Obama, Because of Bush's unconstitutional and vile abuses of power and war

anyway READ this

“" This does not mean that I expect to get Ralph Nader or Cynthia McKinney to become libertarians, nor do they expect me to change my mind on the issues on which we disagree. In the meantime, why can’t we be friends, respectful of each other, and fight the corrupt process from which we suffer, and at the same time champion the four issues that we all agree upon which the two major candidates won’t address?

Many practical benefits can come from this unique alliance. Our cause is liberty — freedom is popular and is the banner that brings people together. Since authoritarianism divides, we always have the edge in an intellectual fight. Once it’s realized that the humanitarian goals of peace and prosperity are best achieved with our views, I’m convinced we win by working with others. Those who don’t want to collaborate are insecure with their own beliefs." - Ron Paul

John: What makes this statement soooooo idiotic...is the fact that the GOP is the "party of NO"...refusing to CONSIDER anything the Obama administration puts forth.

Marketing is the sole characteristic differentiating a Democrat from his Republican counterpart. Neither party cares about abortion, immigration, gay rights, etc. Their politicians simply play on your fears/emotions to win election. Once in office, they govern from the center and spend an ever-increasing portion of your income for their own political/financial benefit. That's what the two-party system is and always will be.

Herman Cain may have been mistaken but only in limiting his commentary to African Americans. In reality, anyone that supports the two-party system is brainwashed. Look no further than this site for evidence. It is littered with spoon-fed, DNC/RNC drivel, mindlessly regurgitated by loyal sheep, blind to their own hypocrisy.

Cannot beleive what you just said, It is littered with spoon-fed, DNC/RNC drivel. You had to been reading my mind. this comment is perfectly put. If you get rid of all that title nonsense, reality will set in.

Anger over the injustices of the past can only do harm to present and future generations. It can only perpetuate racism in the form of seething bitterness and suspicion in both directions. The answer as I see it is to let go of anger and suspicion. Love thy neighbor and follow the golden rule. That's my two cents. I have hope that each new generation will do a better job than the last. Without hope, you can't Have A Dream.

Caran: Anger over the injustices of the past

John: Whites continue to benefit from the injustices of the past....and today's injustices.
The cumulative economic wealth Whites --as a group-- have amassed from past injustices --and current ones-- is HUGE.
"The wealth gap between White and African-American families more than quadrupled from 1984 to 2007.
Financial assets, excluding home equity, among White families grew from a median value of $22,000 to $100,000, while African-Americans had a median wealth of $5,000 in 2007."

Whites have a huge advantage with nearly every economic, political, and social variable. There's even a "racial" disparity in the awarding of the death penalty, in that "Whites killing People of Color are most likely to receive only a life sentence white Defendants of Color murdering a White person are most likely to receive the death penalty.

They benefit from the "stereotype of Black inferiority"...which was created to legitimize slavery but is still pervasively believed today, impacting Blacks' chances of getting a job, feeds into White bankers' beliefs that 'Black applicants are likely to default on loans...and thus are steered to sub-prime loans, and many, many other acts of discrimination.

Two questions for you:

1. What do you know about Africa?
2. Why wouldn't a black African know about the term "soapbox"? (You didn't answer my question earlier.)

I'm a born and raised Texan, black too, and have experienced, in full measure, the Republicans' ignorance and image-sheltered conscious to bring diversity to the Republican Party. I agree, generally, with Author's overall point but the black man, in his natural self, is conservative! No doubt about that!

In fact, liberalism ruins the black man in unimaginable ways and in some cases, beyond rehabilitation. That welfare mentality has done a serious number on blacks; effectively taking away our ability to use brain-power to "create" for our own and be an economic force. The antidote to that is: conservatism.

You look at the Democrat Party, and the media never reports on this, the black base is the only sane, traditional American values and consistent with Christianity principles. We are that base the Republican Party strive to be. Today, the Democrat Party is made up of gay/lesbians, illegal aliens and far-left ideology.

That's not who blacks are as a people and culture ingrained in America. If the Democrat Party lose us as the most loyal base, I feel sorry for them. They "think" the illegal aliens can replace us and illegals are citizens nor do America want them as citizens. The Republican have a golden opportunity to adjust their attitudes, invest and merge policies that helps and strength the Republican Party. We're the eldest sons and daughters of the Republican Party, not the racist midgets currently infecting the Party.

No one forced them onto welfare. No one denied you the right to use brain-power to create for your own. What liberal policies did was give African Americans an open door to use your brain power, where before African Americans were considered incapable of such things by white, racist America. Look at WWII, were African Americans given the chance to use their brain power? NO!, They were the cooks, the laundry people, the laborers that loaded ships. It wasn't until a Democratic President fully integrated the services, that people like Colin Powell and other African American service members were allowed to reach their full potential. Liberals simply believe that EVERYONE should be allowed to reach their full potential, regardless of race, creed, color or sexual orientation. Many of the programs Republicans rail against were put into place to help even the playing field for minorities, especially African Americans, who had been discriminated against, held back, and forced to live in poverty. I don't think the intent was that these programs should become a "lifestyle". Did some abuse it? Do some continue to abuse it? Yes. The Republican party will never adjust. They know their base. It is scared, poor, middle class, white people who see opportunities for minorities as an assault on them and their way of life. They also realize that in 20 or so years white people may well be a minority in this country and this scares the Hell out of them.

"They also realize that in 20 or so years white people may well be a minority in this country and this scares the Hell out of them". Yet, out of fear, they work to hinder - rather than embrace, eventho the inevitable is staring them in their faces.

Herman Cain has a point. The African American community continues to vote Democratic against their best interests. The Democrats continuously browbeat them that they are not good enough to succeed on their own, that they need government to watch over them and provide for them since they cannot do so on their own. Where the Republican party says join us, you have as much potential to make a success of your like as any one else in this country. I guess some people would just rather sit back and be taken care of than work to be a success.

Name one Democrat who has said any such thing! They have the best example to all African Americans as the leader of their party, Barak Obama! An African American man from a single parent family, that rose above his humble beginnings to go on to graduate from Harvard Law school, and become President of the United States.
05:55 PM on 10/04/2011
They wouldn't come out and say it, Just look at their policies. Most geared towards keeping them dependent on government. Those that reject that idea that government needs to look after them succeed. Those that wake up and decide that their life is their own and they are not dependent on government usually end up succeeding. As far as President Obama. Great example. Here is a man that made something of himself. He became educated, lived in several different states and countries, and oh wait he was raised by his white mother and white grandmother, so maybe he was spared some of the "Oh woe is me" mentality.

Cain's remarks (parroted from such right wing thought gurus as Rush Limbaugh) should be called out for what they are - propaganda designed not to garner black support or black votes for republicans, but to cause dismay and discouragement in black voters, and depress black voter turnout. It's no different than "don't vote" campaigns aimed at latino voters in the southwest, or robo calls to minority districts telling folks that election day has been moved to wednesday.

The comment regarding "welfare queens" speaks volumes about racism. The majority of "welfare queens" are WHITE. But simply assuming it refers to blacks shows the knee-jerk reaction of those looking for the racism in EVERYTHING. As a mixed-race person myself, I still carry scars from the beatings I took during the civil rights struggle in the 60's. But the angriest I have ever been at anyone was an incident when I was called a racist by a black man who was too young to even remember the 60s. The struggle by people of color will never end until they themselves rid themselves of the tendency to see racism in everyone but themselves. Physician, heal thyself.

Just because I am too young to recall the 1960s first hand does not mean I am somehow unable to recognize racism when I see it. For example; the fact that most people on public assistance are White & and most "welfare queens" are White, yet the Right regularly characterizes them as not White is racist.

The fact that you feel Black people are to blame for that characterization is as well. Stop it.

"I am not a Number. I am a Free Man!"
04:14 PM on 10/04/2011
I am old enough, and you are correct.

Reagan's "welfare queen" was Purposely Miscast - not as the typical recipient = a rural white woman with lots of kids, trying to hang on.

Reagan portrayed her as a "Cadillac-Driving Welfare Queen," implying a black woman with lots of kids who is dishonestly bilking the system so much that she can afford black people's (at that time) most aspired-to car! A Cadillac!

Everyone, white, black or other knew Exactly what he meant - no "dog whistle" needed - and so began the demonization of AFDC (Aid to Families with Dependent Children). It was not until the late 1990's did the number of black families exceed the number of white welfare recipients. Those numbers may be changing soon with this economy.

The "Welfare Queen" is pure Scapegoating, for political gain.
Shameful, then and now.

01:57 PM on 10/04/2011
I had to laugh at a few of the comments below.....Bush the most 'pro-Hispanic' president in history when he did the most to RESTRICT immigration? Black votes not mattering, when if not, this issue (and subsequently, this article) wouldn't have arisen? Jews not identifying with a political party when BY FAR they are the most liberal subgroup of all? This is the reason why this country needs to fund and advocate education more vigorously; more and more every day I read something ignorant and incorrect that has been posted in complete honesty. This applies to Herman Cain as well. I know not from which law school he hails, but I'm sure they can't be proud of such a product. Did they decide to skip the part in the history text that implicitly explains that the Black vote belonged to the Republican party in gratitude to Abe Lincoln's freeing of the slaves? Dose he not realize that as a black man himself, many of the policies that hindered the advancement of his ancestors were the work of the 'conservative ideals' he worships today? Also, Cain clearly isn't well spoken or can't think quickly on his feet- the statement "many Blacks aren't OPEN-MINDED enough to consider CONSERVATIVE ideas' is a paradox. How could he possibly be president?
08:16 PM on 10/04/2011
I'm sure spending more money on education is the answer, it has worked so well up to this point.
01:36 PM on 10/04/2011
The GOP has done an awful job at reaching out to the black community, however, that is changing with groups like Apostle Klaver's Raging Elephants. In doing community outreach for the party blacks are shocked when they learn that the Republicans passed the Civil Rights Act in direct opposition the the Democrats. That Republicans repealed slavery and the Fugitive Slave Act. They are even more surprised when they learn that Rev. Martin Luther King was a Republican. We are making tremendous progress with our outreach efforts to blacks and Latinos because when they learn what the GOP actually stands for, they identify with our values and not the oppressive policies of the DNC.

With that logic, Wilson, FDR, and Truman would now be republicans. You can't get away from the fact that it was the democratic party who propagated slavery, passed the Jim Crow Laws, voted overwhelmingly against the CRA, and legalized abortion to cleanse the population of black babies (Hillary's favorite progressive-Margaret Sanger. Look her up). Now the black power brokers enslave the poor inner city blacks from within the only party that would allow that dominence, and call the republicans the racists.
03:18 PM on 10/04/2011
I disagree. The Republican party has always been about limited government and personal liberty. Those ideals have not changed and black Republican leaders like Apostle Klaver and former NAACP Exec. Frantz Kebreau are doing brilliant work in spreading our small government, pro-family, Christian values.

A century ago liberal meant conservative but the progressive socialist movement hijacked it. One good thing about President Obama being elected is that he woke up a whole new segment of America. The GOP is now organizing almost as well as the left. You have a major head start on us but we're catching up quickly. The 2012 election will be the biggest landslide in American history.
