Billy Graham's Anti-Gay Fundamentalism

Posted: 10/17/2012 11:05 am

It may seem unkind to criticize a beloved preacher who is about to turn 94 -- unless that preacher is an uncharitable Rev. Billy Graham spending his last years trying to defeat the movement for same-sex marriage.

Graham has a reputation as a diplomatic evangelist who has largely sought to avoid the scorched path of fundamentalists preaching fire and brimstone. But the evangelist's near-endorsement of Gov. Mitt Romney, which included an affirmation of "the biblical definition of marriage," should serve as a revelation that for all his moderate ways Graham is just another anti-gay fundamentalist who cannot tolerate the presence of gay and lesbian couples within Christianity.

Graham has long considered homosexual behavior to be a "sinister form of perversion," a lifestyle choice that will lead gays to personal ruin. When a young woman wrote him about her sexual love for another woman in 1974, the evangelist replied with a threat: homosexual perverts will not inherit the kingdom of heaven. "Your affection for another of your own sex is misdirected and will be judged by God's holy standards," he answered.

For the content of God's holy standards, the evangelist has typically turned to the Bible, concluding without reservation that the Word of God "praises the marriage of a man and a woman" but "speaks only negatively of homosexual behavior when it is mentioned."

Driving this conclusion is Graham's fundamentalist interpretation of Scripture, one that seeks to understand biblical passages just as they are, without subjecting them to the tools of criticism employed by credible biblical scholars.

As a biblical fundamentalist, Graham has refused to acknowledge what scholar Sherman Bailey argued way back in 1955: that because biblical authors knew nothing about homosexuality as "an inherited trait, or an inherent condition due to psychological or glandular causes," biblical words about homosexuality have limited value when we seek to apply them to what we now know about homosexuality.

This is not to say that Graham is unaware of arguments that homosexual inclinations may have some genetic roots. In fact, his current website makes the peculiar argument that "in a broken world, the discovery of a genetic link would not prove that such a condition was God's intent. It must be emphasized that even if a biological predisposition to homosexuality in some people exists, it would not change God's opposition to that behavior." (Of course, Graham himself did not write that; he has long employed ghostwriters for his website, advice column, books and, yes, even his sermons.)

Convinced by the Bible's fierce condemnation of homosexual acts, Graham has long counseled those who engage in gay sex to repent of their sin and return to he welcoming arms of Jesus Christ. "Such reformation is possible for you," Graham wrote his lesbian follower in 1974. "Seize it while there's still a chance."

Graham has also consistently maintained this latter position -- that gays and lesbians, with the transforming power of Jesus Christ, can liberate themselves from the perversion of homosexuality -- though more recently he has sounded more pastoral than he did toward the lesbian in 1974.

The evangelist now tends to offer the following counsel to those struggling with their homosexuality: Be assured that God loves you, seek forgiveness from Christ and rely on his healing power, separate from people and surroundings that encourage your same-sex feelings and get help from a Christian counselor who practices reparative therapy. For Graham, "any willing person can be liberated from homosexuality through the power of Jesus Christ."

Make no mistake about it: However warmly pastoral he sounds in his elderly years, however much he has played the role of healer and reconciler at various points in his lifetime, Rev. Billy Graham is yet another bigoted preacher spouting anti-gay theology grounded in outdated biblical interpretation -- a parochial preacher who cannot even begin to conceive of the possibility that a God of love would make a place for gay and lesbian lovers.

May God have mercy -- and heal Billy Graham.

Just as he is.

You do realize that calling Billy Graham "Just another bigoted preacher" is not the most effective way to win friends and influence people, right? I mean, I'm on your side of the debate and I feel like this was pushing a little harshly.
Right now I'm working on a documentary to help show evangelicals that same-sex-attracted people are more than just their orientation. This blog post reduces Billy Graham to his beliefs on one particular issue. In this article, you've practiced the same kind of simplistic reduction that makes me crazy when my LGBT brothers and sisters in Christ experience it.
Again, I agree with your position for the most part, but nobody is going to be convinced to join your side, and I doubt anyone will buy the notion that Billy Graham is an anti-gay fundamentalist.
Peace to you.

Consider too that it may be Billy Graham's name on these more recent actions, but lately whenever Billy speaks, if you look carefully, you'll see his son Franklin's lips moving ....

Billy is a relic of the past. Science has proven that mythologies of the past are nothing more than unfounded "beliefs". That's why beliefs are called beliefs, not facts.

Science is still discovering. How many times have you read over the decates..."Milk is bad for you...oops, scientist discovered it is good for you. Eggs are bad for you...oops...eggs are actually good for you...etc, etc, etc.

God said that homosexuality is a choice and obscene. Science is flaky in several areas. Give it time to catch up to prove God was right all along.

Rev Graham is sticking to what he has said for over 70 years.

That's disgusting; God is not like Hitler. There's no good reason to think homosexuality is bad. "Just because the Bible says so" is a terrible reason.

"Sticking to" whatever one has said in the past despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary is not a virtue.

God has said? Lol, that awkward moment when someone refers to what human beings wrote as "what God said." I believe that's known as bibliolatry, a form of idolatry and a sin which you and the rest of your bigoted fundie friends are most guilty of. There is no passage in the Bible that refers to a committed relationship between two adults of the same sex, so stop eisegeting by reading your own prejudices into the Bible.

Donald, and evolution is a theory, NOT a fact. Face it, what is being taught in schools about evolution is a complete lie. Since your statement about mythologies are vary general in nature and have nothing to do with Billy, your statement is very confusing. "Billy is a relic of the past" since when are people relics??? I believe he is still alive.

This issue is much more complex than just homophobia. Its a central idea of Christianity and especially Protestantism that we are living in a devil's world tainted by original sin, which are not only evil temptations but also corporal evils such as defecation, physical deformities, or the need to kill to eat. According to extreme Christian thinkers like Erasmus or Luther your life must be totally devoted to Christ so most people are damned anyways.
You can't answer to this worldview. Give them a scientific explanation for homosexuality and they'll just say, "so what?".

"Give them a scientific explanation for homosexuality and they'll just say, "so what?" Science has NOT proven that people are born into homosexuality. SEX by anybody with anybody is a CHOICE. Nobody is born having sex from birth! Sex has always been a choice between two people where both agree or disagree on having sex. Abstinence is also a choice. People that chose never to have sex in their entire life made that choice, they were not "born" into never having sex. People having sex before marriage is a sin, either with the opposite sex or the same sex. A sin is a sin! People, you can't repent of a SIN if you do not acknowledge your sins. Lust is not the same as love and is a sin. It is simply a desire of the flesh.

Why do you try to come across as a Christian post/writer if you know nothing about Christianity and are constantly name calling Christians that want to show you the TRUTH? " being gay is a SIN". Why can't you accept that fact? You are judging those that are trying to get you to see the truth and you call them names. Eternally speaking, I rather have someone tell me the "truth" even if it hurts, so I can look into it and make my own decision on matters. Jesus Christ wants ALL of you and wants you to repent. If you do not even acknowledge what a sin is, how can you repent? Every born again Christian had to leave their sins behind when accepting Christ. I left drugs, drinking, cussing, gambling, lying, stealing, and more for Jesus. My life is full of joy now and "free". Why do you think that you can keep a sin hidden from God? He is ALL knowing and there is no where in the universe that you can hide anything from God. That is why we continue to drive the point, its a SIN based on lust, get over it and move foreword or stay where you are. Its your choice, but stop calling Christians bigots because we are not. We are putting ourselves on the line for you and telling you what it is yet you persecute us. Love you my friend.

Being gay is not a sin, it's an innate and unchangeable sexual orientation that is and always has been part of the natural world. The following organizations agree that changing ("repenting?") one's sexual orientation is not only impossible but psychologically damaging: American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Counseling Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the National Association of School Psychologists, and the American Academy of Physician Assistants. Learn from the mistakes of the past. When you're using the Bible to oppress, you're using it wrong. And each oppression the Church has committed in the past has hinged on their unwillingness to accept diversity as part of God's creative intent, the same mistake you're making now.

The AMA. Ha. http://blogs.ajc.com/health-flock/2011/09/08/physicians-say-the-ama-no-longer-their-voice/

The organizations you've listed are advancing statements of belief based on faith in "facts". There is no evidence that has consensus in the scientific community concerning specifically homosexual genes (the only consensus you'll find is when your confirmation bias leads you to the "authority" of this homogenous group of institutions).

What you view as "oppression", an orthodox Christian views as "liberation". This is a conflict of visions in which yelling louder resolves little. History and science are loud enough; Christians or otherwise can do better than lazy generalizations.

This whole statement is false and misleading. Lets start with the first sentence "being gay is not a sin". "Sin" is a Spiritual term and it comes from God. What you are saying is that medical and social workers and others are authorities of "sin"??? Seriously? You sound like you have convinced yourself of it being OK with God because these so called "experts" say there's nothing wrong with it. Its kind of like saying that my plumber will advice the brain surgeons on how to proceed with their operations and do their jobs right. When you talk about "sin" we are talking about something that came FROM GOD, not man. You can convince yourself of believing anything, what I hope you will understand is that God is has given us an opportunity to change our ways and be right with Him in order to live our lives to the fullest and then after we die, we can spend eternity with Him. Obedience is key, understanding and repenting are other keys. Jesus is the who paid for the sins of the world and He requires ALL of hearts, not just part of it.
