Helping End Bullying with the Kardashians, Demi Lovato and Extreme Makeover: Home Edition

Posted: 12/01/11 12:49 AM ET

On Dec. 2, Extreme Makeover: Home Edition will air our anti-bullying episode that shares the tragic story of 11-year-old Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover and his family. Carl took his own life this year because of the constant bullying at school, stemming from something so simple as sexual orientation. The taunting became too much to live with, and on April 6, 2009 he ended his life at home. The Walker home became a living memory of this horrific event, as the third floor is where their sweet boy took his own life. The EM:HE team of designers were able to take part and rebuild the Walker home, creating a new safe haven that met their needs and honored Carl in a positive way.

It was a particularly special show to be a part of for me. It's a message I can help tell. As an active member of the LGBT community, it's truly heart-wrenching to hear about Carl. This episode was one of the hardest and most emotional shows I have done in my nine-year run on the series. There is a scene where I hold up his clothes, which are so tiny -- it's so unfortunate to think about how much more this 11-year-old-boy had to give in life.

Our goal at EM:HE is to make a difference, and it's a blessing for me to help shed light on causes I believe in. We surprised the Walker family and took them on a dream vacation to Hollywood, where they were greeted by the Kardashians. The ladies hosted an anti-bullying rally in support of the family with other celebrities, including Demi Lovato. The family was so grateful, and I was so thankful to give my heartfelt support. When the family returned to Massachusetts, they had a wonderful new home with which to honor Carl and create new memories.

Watch Carl's sister Dominique receive a special Kardashian surprise:

Extreme Makeover: Home Edition airs Fridays at 8/7c on ABC.

I just watched that episode on the DVR, and cried throughout the whole time.... BTW, I didn't know you were gay... It obviously doesn't matter as far as your skills as a decorator, so why would I know, but still.

Bullying is wrong period and needs to stop! This message needs to get out there by any means necessary, it shouldn't matter who puts it out there as long as the message is clear. As for the Kardashians and what people think of them or their motives and like to call them names, just remember that at the end of the day they are people to and do have feelings. If they want to speak out against bullying that is their right!

Suddenly charitaable acts after bad press for the Kardashians is pure BS and public damage control !

Why? Why God? Why are the Kardashians even in this episode?

Geed, people will do anything for money. what could they possibly teach the world on bullying. our society is so messed up that they look upon this family as positive rolls models or anyone that i would even take advice from. they should practice what they preach and educate themselves about the real world. Listen carefully when they speak, they only speak air.

Because the people who were having their house madeover are fans. And yes, the Kardashians did it because they wanted the attention, but they're doing that EVERYWHERE!

Such a heartbreaking (and sadly all too common) story that needs to be shared.

Heartbreaking story but important to share!

I applaud yhou Michael for helping this family. I am so tired of my own cynicism however. I actually resent the K family being the "celebs" that helped deliver a message of anti-bullying. I, chagrined, admit to seeing a few episodes and Khloe, in particular, bullies everyone. I know it's family but it is still the caustic attitude of "I can say anything I want". She even yelled at judges when her brother was in DWTS. I will BET money that if JPH (How I met your mother) had been asked to head the rally, he'd have stepped up, or Ellen and Portia. Maybe the K are attempting to come back from the bad press..nope..all this happened before the divorce. I will remain proud of YOU and hope for a time when LGBT of all ages can just "be".

really? you and your friends are good role models? You just are jumping on the band wagon and trying to get ratings like every other fake reality star. You are the true bullies who have turned our sons and daughters into insecure children trying to emulate a bunch of phonies.

While I respect the work that EM:HE does and think that this is a very important topic, the choice of anti-bullying ambassadors makes me question how well this was thought out. How someone presents themselves, how they portray their own self worth as an example needs to be as important as the actual work of helping people rebuild their lives. The team on EM:HE have always shown the best of the people they work with.

Demi Lovato has struggled and has made her way back from adversity. She seems like a young woman who will continue to grow through her struggles.

However, I think the choice of the Kardashians wasn't well planned. I don't see much wisdom, or self-respect in their life choices. I also don't see much mutual respect for each other. So, in this case, where respect, and understanding need to be emphasized they are the last group of people I would ever choose to sponsor an anti-bullying rally.

Just when I write the Kardashians off they go and do something like this. Damn.
Nice job Home Makeover and Demi and The Kardashians. You have done a very good thing, thank you.

I feel it's important in this issue to identify the real reason for Carls harassment. It wasn't about sexual orientation. He was 11 and had no sexuality. It was about gender non conformity. This is the real issue in this and other cases and is the issue behind homophobia.

He was seen as not conforming to his gender role. As being effeminate. This society has an absolute terror of people who do not conform to their gender role. It's a national phobia that evokes near terror in many people. It is the source of much nervous humor. Until we confront this gender phobia there will be harassment of non gender conformist people such as gay people. Feminine men and masculine women are beautiful and need to stand up to hate and threats and insults about them that we see in the media all day everyday. Until strict gender conformity is no longer seen as the greatest thing you can ever do, and insulting gender non conformist people is no longer acceptable, this hate will continue.

Amen! My daughter actually had the "head-mistress" of her school plop down beside her at lunch and say, "Why don't you wear your hair like the other girls'?" This happened several times and made her shut down to others and left her with trust issues that she's still dealing with in middle school. It's NOT just the kids, you are right, it's the adults setting the stage. We are trying to raise individuals and not sheeple but we are swimming upstream.

When I wes 12 my home ec teacher calld me aside and said "you are such a pretty girl, why don't you dress more like a girl". It wrecked me for a loong time, even till College when I came out. She did not intend to be mean, I think she acted out of a genuine (albeit misguieed) concern.
I think halping your daughter work through this will help her to overcome it in less than 7 years it took for me to get over it. Your daughter is very lucky to have you as her mother.
Respect. And Fanned

l'm sure its no different from we went to school...this is the society we are born into...everyone copies someone, whether it's clothes,hairdo,makeup...look in the mirror..you copied someone, so did l....we adults were children at one time,so were your parents, and their parents an so on, ..the fact that her head-mistress talk to her shouln't blow her mind,..and what does 'trust' have to do with it?...l don't like my grandkids sagging pants but that doesn;t stop them from wearing them that way...everyone is going to do what they want to do...stop taking it so serious
