Second Place in NH Democratic Primary Goes to...Ron Paul?!

Posted: 01/18/2012 11:01 am

We all know that President Obama won his party's primary in New Hampshire. What you may not know is that Obama only won 79.5% of the vote. Second place in the New Hampshire Democratic primary went to Ron Paul, with 3.7%, Mitt Romney was third with 2.9% of the vote, and Jon Huntsman was fourth with 2.0%. Yes, you heard me right, Ron Paul came in second in the New Hampshire Democratic primary.

And in case you are wondering, Barack Obama received 0.1% of the vote in the Republican primary.

How can this happen? New Hampshire allows registered independents to choose which party's primary they want to vote in. The catch is that when they select a party primary to vote in, they change their registration to that party. If they want to be an independent with the option of exercising a similar choice in future primary elections, they must change their party registration back to independent. Some people forget to change their registration back to independent, and when they show up to vote find that they must vote in the primary of the party they are registered with.

In 2008, quite a few independents chose to vote in the Democratic primary and apparently forgot to change their registration by 2012. Still wanting to express their preference in the only meaningful contest, these persons decided to cast a write-in vote for their preferred Republican candidate, even though their vote would not be counted towards the outcome.

Now, for the most part this is merely a fun oddity, but it actually matters to the ordering of the official fourth and fifth place finishers in the Republican primary. Newt Gingrich officially came in fourth with 23,421 votes and Rick Santorum came in fifth with 23,405 votes. However, Santorum received 303 votes in the Democratic primary and Gingrich received 276. When these uncounted votes are factored in, Santorum beat Gingrich by a nose, 23,708 to 23,697 votes.

Meaningful? Perhaps. The post-New Hampshire narrative might have been different if Santorum was perceived to have beaten Gingrich -- there might have been added pressure for Gingrich to drop out. In some ways, you have to feel sorry for Santorum. Not only did he really come in fourth in New Hampshire, he also likely beat Romney in Iowa due to a miscount of votes.

You missed the real meaning here. People talk about Ron Paul being "unelectable", but he's already stealing more votes from Obama than any other candidate.

I am assuming when Ron Paul graduated from Medical School He took the hypocritical oath , instead of the oath of Hippocrates. Not having health insurance is always by choice, but he would let them die. Not exactly who I want in the White House.

Actually, he used to treat people for free to low cost.

He never said that, some idiots in the crowd at a debate yelled that. It was also idiots in the crowd that booed him when he was referencing the Golden Rule, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I know it's just plain easier to go along with the crowd and accuse people of things, but truth is found by research and objective analysis, not mob mentality.

Please tell me, what war has Ron Paul ended? He supported the war we have going on now. What has he done other than talk about what he will do?
02:46 PM on 01/19/2012
What exactly is your point?? Nobody outside of the President has the ability to stop a war.

Point is that he's all talk. You don't know that he will end the last remaining war. Obama has ended IRAQ like he promised and I have no doubt that he will end afghan. I have doubt that Paul will.

That's not exactly true. Because war was not declared the President (Bush) could only use troops for 60 days with out the Congress approving the financial spending for more time. Bush got us into the first 60 days, but Congress has kept us in it for 9yrs for fear of voting against military spending and appearing to be unpatriotic. Re-election is every thing, while doing the right thing is a small piece of the job.

Ron Paul hasn't ended any wars because he is not in any position of power to do so. He voted for the authority to go after Bin Laden in Afghanistan. He did NOT vote for the Iraq war and aggressively argued that the claim that they had weapons of mass destruction was a lie and was simply war propaganda (which was revealed to be absolutely true). He does not support "the war" we have going on now. It's not even a war. It's nation building and policing of the world, and if he we were President, he would never go to war unless our national security was jeopardized or had a declaration from congress to do so. Bush and Obama did NEITHER of this, and this is exactly what Ron Paul opposes.

What has he done? He VOTES. He stands with his principles and spreads this message of non-interventionism. He is not isolationist. He is all for talk and trade, just against bombing them... He has tried to talk some sense into Washington by trying to warn them of the evils of the military industrial complex and the Federal Reserve. He singlehandedly has brought these two issues into the mainstream and that is an enormous accomplishment in itself.

Yup, that we all stand as individuals and forget about race, stop playing the race card and stop allowing race to divide us by realizing we're all American? I'm proud to say that yes, yes I do share Dr. Paul's view on race. It shouldn't matter... all people are created equal and we should start acting like it. Plus, I've read Dr. Paul's work in context, something the sound bite queens & kings can't be bothered with. Try it, you'll take something entirely new out of it.

Obama will end two wars, ended DADT, created the CFPA, got $20b from BP in the face of strong opposition, saved Detroit, signed New START, and enacted universal healthcare – the defining goal of the liberal movement.

Oh, he made the courageous call to nail Bin Laden!

Right which is we are all equal and guaranteed equal rights under the US Constitution. The newsletters have been proven to be written by another person. Get over it. Ron Paul is the only candidate whom fights for minority equality

LOL! What's his record of this? I know Obama's record. I see what he has implemented. Obama believes that healthcare is a right. Paul believes that people have a right to deny others that right.

He clearly believes the rights of states and private enterprise trumphs the rights of minorities because he doesnt agree with the civil rights act imposition of telling private companies who make public accomodations that they must not discriminate by sex or race. The first step of fighting for "minority equality" is not making a space for companies to limit services based on the color of someones skin or sex.

Ron Paul could get nominated tomorrow and lead a ticket with ballot status in all 50 states if he wanted to but he refuses to run as the Libertarian candidate instead preferring to whine that he doesn't get equal time and is crowded out of the Republican field.

OK, so maybe Paul would never win as the Libertarian candidate in the general. But as a legitimate third party candidate in what everyone says will be a close election he could leverage his third party status in a way he never could as a perennial gadfly in the republican quadrennial beauty contest.

"he could leverage his third party status"

No he couldn't. He'd be completely marginalized by the media and the Dems and Reps.

His ONLY chance to get the message of peace out is to run as a Rep against the warmonger Obama.

Many young voters who do not support the pro-war policies of the Obama administration and have been turning to Ron Paul in order to express their opposition to the overseas empire because he is the only anti-war candidate in either party. The democratic party thinks that the anti-war vote will have to go with them because they aren't quite as bad as the republicans but they are wrong because there will be independent candidates against the wars such as Gary Johnson. Obama should not take these people for granted but his administration is too wedded to war to change and he has no serious opposition from the sheep in his own party.

Today's news has it that a "top" U.S.official is off to Israel to persuade them not to attack Iran. What do we care? Let the Mideast crazies go at one another, and may the best god win (looks like a toss-up between Jehovah and Allah). Let's keep out of this madhouse brawl ... enough of our brave troops and our treasure have been sunk into that swamp with lies and nothing has been created except hatred for our nation. Vote for Ron Paul -- the only candidate who has the guts to tell it as it is, and cannot be bought or dictated to by either corporate propaganda or neocon money.

The candidates ignore Ron Paul at their own peril. It is amazing how the political spinmeisters continue to advise the candidates to ignore the issues and focus on he mundane. Americans want jobs, they want health care, and they want debt relief. As long as they ignore this, the people will continue to support men like Ron Paul. One might think that they are brilliantly stupid.
10:05 AM on 01/19/2012
Sir, in my state of AZ Democrats are so rare that often they don't field a candidate for the general election and so I've voted Green often as the alternative.

But you are wrong if you think the likes of Ron Paul can create jobs, reduce the debt and provide health care to those without it.

Well, he can effectively reduce the debt.

NOBODY can save the economy, but Paul can offer a softer landing.

and the entire MSM establishment. Think US elections are fair ?
Try to support Ron Paul...

I don't know why they consider this news. The fix was in when obama was elected and the fix is already in for the next election. The GOP is putting on a show so they don't look totally controlled unlike the DNC which openly likes being told what to do.

So, 43% of the Independent vote, and 20% of the democratic vote. That guy's just so unelectable.

43% of the independent vote, and a paltry total of the Republican vote.

20% of the Democratic comprised of independents who densely forgot to switch affiliation into an election that meant something.

So he's electable if he doesn't have to get nominated and if people are really dense.

If there's one thing Ron Paul supporters do well, it's reading for content.

It seems as if people labeled democrats are still capable of thinking for themselves and observing that obama and romney's campaign money flows from the special interests they serve(namely wall street or the money powers) while ron paul derives his funds from the working class/active duty military.

Or, alternately, that a sizable percentage of the people labeled Democrat were too dense to switch back to Republican and vote for Paul in a way that would help him win the nomination. Your call.
