Reading The Pictures: More Racist "Advice" From The McCain Campaign

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

Raines-Mccain-Video
Obama-Sex

Although I certainly don't believe that the McCain's campaign's setting up of an African-American in "Advice,"  the McCain campaign's latest attack video, is inherently racist, in this case -- because Mr. Raines has virtually no connection to Obama or his campaign -- he is distinguishable as subject matter primarily on the basis of his skin color.

What further strikes me is the McCain camp's political perseveration (or, almost pathological return to the same well).  In other words, consider the very close parallel between the smarmy way Obama was portrayed in Schmidt/McCain's Kindergarten/Sex Ed piece ten days ago and the portrayal of Frank Raines in this latest job. In their hateful desperation (Raines having virtually no connection to Obama or his campaign), Team McCain once again works the combination of the found photograph and the base stereotype of the black man's lust.

Given that avarice relates equally to greed or desire, it makes little difference here whether the Schmidt/McCain hook involves money or sex.

The deal is that the latest tack by the McCainites is to blame the financial mess on subprime in the inner city. They also are trying to tie Fannie and Freddie up as the culprits who gave out all the subprime loans to the inner city residents. Hogwash with lipstick. FHA loans are victims of the mess but neither Agency ever gave out subprime loans. Of course, Raines was CEO at one time and being black he makes a good target for these racists. Trying to tie him to Obama is even better. They are getting desperate so there are a lot more lies.

If you can stand it go to some of the more general sites and keep posting and point out liars. This election is being changed by the internet. Yes We Can and we will fight back./

I guess I'm one of the few who doesn't see the racism. All I see is a very desperate John McCain grasping at straws to bring Obama down. Assuming something is racist because they use two African American men in the ad may show your own bias and fears. Besides going down this road is something the Right love to whine about.

Freddie, you do not see the racism potential, undertones, and overtones of the two ads? You think it is merely an indication of desperation more so than an attempt at ethnic degradation and humiliation through imagery? You also think that if someone detects a racist intent behind the advertisement it is more an indication of latent fear and bias within them rather than a real grievance based on fact? You sum up with, there are those in the GOP who love to say that anytime you say something is racist you are playing the victim card? I hope I am properly discerning and depicting your meaning.

Now Freddie, can you imagine someone wanting to deal with the ugly and burdensome conversation of racism if they do not have to deal with it? Can you imagine desperation leading to a thought that within the American populace there are people with latent fear and bias in their psyche and hearts? Can you see such deliberation leading to advertising meant to stir up latent fears and bigotry such that people believe a lie and vote their fear and bias? Have you seen “Birth of a Nation”? Have you read stories about Emmet Till, and how he died? Have you ever met someone whose self-esteem is broken because the society they live in sends messages via the media that paint them as ugly, bestial, less than, unbecoming, or sub-standard?

Racism is alive and hungry, and the GOP is trying to feed it.

I am hoping that the Obama campaign will respond to this add forcibly. By this ad, McCain has given the Obama campaign an opening. Now is the time to expose McCain- a member of the Keating 5-who tried to forcefully interfere with the S&L regulators. His intervention, along with his other Senators who were culprits, ended up costing U.S. tax payers over one trillion dollars. McCain's lack of judgement-which borders on criminality-must be exposed to stress that he has no credibility when he poses as a reformer who will bring about changes in the economy.

It is the duty of the media to call out this bs wherever and whenever it raises its foul head. This is a chance for the media to redeem itself.

Did you say the media? The media is dead in this country. They are bunch of cowards who can even do their job right, mind you ask the tough questions.

I once joked that my local paper would one day run a story about firemen rescuing a cat up a tree. Ha Ha!! A month later . . . on the front page, no less . . . there it was. I have the morning paper in my hand right now and I am trying to compare the "news" to what I am reading in The Huffington Post (also the Washington Post, the Denver Post, etc.). Simply put: there is no resemblance. In the local paper, you would not know that the most important election of our time is entering its critical phase. Nothing about McCain's preposterous assaults on Obama. Nothing about his weird answers about Spain. Nothing about leaving health care to the 'free' market. Nothing about blaming Obama for the Wall St. melt down. So the elderly - you know, the ones who vote - who still rely on the daily newspaper for vital information are totally in the dark about this election. Every American must actually go hunting for critical election news on the Internet, unless they live in a major metro area where the last few remaining "real' newspapers still cover the election with some depth. I am a retired newspaper reporter of 32 years.

And that is the crux of the matter right there. No way this would be a close election if the traditional media was doing its job. Had they been doing their job everyone would know by now that John McCain is a doddering old man. That he has no clue. That he is no Foreign Affairs expert. He doesn't know where Spain is, he doesn't know that Czechoslovakia no longer exists, that Pakistan and Iraq do not a border share. He doesn't know about the dynamics between Persians and Arabs, the Sunnis and Shiites and others. That being able to see into Russia doesn't mean that you are an expert on Russian affairs. Obama would be out of the race by now if he made one tenth of the gaffes that this old man makes. It is simple astounding to me that people think he is more fit to be POTUS than Obama. The cool, calm, unruffled, knowledgeable, intellectual, elegant, handsome and technologically savvy Obama. If this old man were to beat Obama come November, this would say more about this country than about either men.

Of course Barack Obama has only the slightest, most insignificant connection to Frank Raines. He said so.

Obama never even met Nadhmi Auchi. It doesn’t count that Obama attended a party in Auchi’s honour and proposed a toast to Auchi. Obama says he doesn’t remember, and his word is good as gold.

Obama didn’t know Rezko owned low-income housing units were in terrible repair, and that people in Obama’ own district were living in misery. If Obama had known, he most certainly wouldn’t have written those letters of recommendation to help Rezko get even more Federal monies, and Obama certainly wouldn’t have accepted Rezko’s campaign contributions or Rezko’s help to buy a mansion.

Obama barely knew Ayers, and all those years they worked together were, you know, not to be considered. They just happened to live in the same neighbourhood, that’s all.

Obama was not ever present in the pews when the Rev Jeremiah Wright went on one of his racist, anti-American tirades.

Obama didn’t even know the Rev James Meeks was a homophobic bigot.

Obama is Pure. He’s The One. And anyone who says different is a RACIST! So there! Hmmf! That’ll learn ya.

In the thirty years of business management and community service I have been fortunate enough to have enjoyed I have most certainly met and even done business with some pretty dodgy characters. During that time I believe that I have maintained an ethical and respectable personal and business philosophy and practice. No one, as far as I know, judges me by the people I have come into contact with, nor would they be acting fairly and honestly if they did. I understand the most on this forum chose not to even reply to your dribble however why should you get a free pass? If your intention is to defend a clearly racist attack by McCain then the least you could do is provide some objective evidence, analysis, observations or authorities to support you case. My first year Lincoln Douglas high school debate students could defeat your case with one half of their brains turned off.

Even if all of your statements were true, which they are not, their only significance would be in revealing your ignorance and bias. You might find some sympathy for your post amongst your fellow yobs but don't expect the members of this forum to take you seriously.

It is an act of desperation! I recommend to all a piece by Elizabeth Drew in Politico, September 17/08. Ms. Drew, who previously wrote a complimentary book about Sen. McCain (Citizen McCain, Simon & Schuster, 2002), now makes a stinging indictment of him. She writes, among others: “McCain’s recent conduct of his campaign—his willingness to lie repeatedly (including his acceptance speech) and to play Russian roulette with the vice-presidency, in order to fulfill his long-held ambition—has transformed earlier and growing sense that John McCain is not a principled man. In fact, it is not clear who he is.” On McCain’s surge politics, she writes: “In making a big issue of having backed the surge (and simplifying the reasons for its apparent success), he preempts debate on the very idea of the war. He has talked (and sung) loosely about attacking Iran. More recently, he oversimplified this summer’s events in Georgia and made intemperate remarks about Russia, about which he’s been more belligerent than the administration for some time. (He has his own set of neocons.).” Furthermore, She writes that there is “a disturbingly erratic side of McCain’s nature. There’s a certain lack of seriousness in him. And he does not appear to be a reflective man, or very interested in domestic issues. One cannot imagine him ruminating late into the night about, say, how to educate and train Americans for the new global and technological challenges.”

According to the Washington Post Raines has claimed to be advising Obama. It seems the claims of racism are getting tenuous. It seems now that if Obama is pictured with another prominant Black person there will be a claim of racism.

You probably think the Horton ads were ok too, huh.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:11 AM on 09/20/2008

The claims or racism do not hinge upon whether Raines worked for Obama, works for Obama or will ever work for Obama. They are clearly implicit in the imagery, context and message conveyed in the ad.

After all, the Rethug slime machine turned Kerry into a traitor who gained purple hearts while serving in Viet Nam, while GWBush went AWOL in the Nat'l Guard, what else do you expect?? The ads are racist and LIES , but the Rethigs dont mind....they want to WIN ...Truth be damned!

I'm a 56 college educated black man who has voted in every presidential election since Nixon's last term. I keep trying to vote for a republican, but it seems counter-productive. That would be like me sending my Amex # to the head of the Aryan Brotherhood for a trip to their annual convention. It just ain't gonna work out well for me.

While I do believe the McCain campaign knows what they're doing, I think what they want most is angry response from the "left" - one that they can blame on the Obama campaign. They're DYING for another distraction because when the campaign is about actual issues - they drop like a rock.

The best thing we can do about these sorts of ads is ignore the racial overtones and concentrate on the substance, that is, once again, John McCain is LYING. The racist smear will never stick and will hurt Obama. The LIAR monicker is already starting to stick to McCain - so throw it hard and often.

McCain has been pushing the "predator" fears for a while now. In the addition to the the two ads shown above, he approved the ad featuring Obama with Brittany and Paris, two youg blonde women with "reputations."

We all got the message.
