I was watching TV at the gym... as usual, with the sound off ... when this outrageous CNN story suddenly appeared on the screen.
It wasn't just that "Is Obama The Antichrist?" was fronted for most of the 3:29 "report." It wasn't just that the piece kept replaying pieces of Team McCain's cheap and bizarre "The One" attack ad. It wasn't only the mainstream boost to the fringe fundamentalist paranoia surrounding the ad.
It was that CNN chose to splice-in snippets like the one above from the creepy Antichrist movie, "Left Behind," the sudden countenance of this African-American guy practically causing me to also scream (over the media's love for hysteria and fear-mongering).

The correct header should have been "McCain believes Obama is the Anti-Chris t".... then everyone would be clear about what the problem really is: McCane is a whacko. Any question on such a subject -if asked at all in a serious news setting - should have pointed towards the nut proposing the idea.
It is sick that CNN or any other "real news source" would put such a notion front and center.
Inane. Purely inane.
I truly wonder why no body has ever picked up on this, and stated matter of factly the chance that this would mean a lot more then this stupid ad ever could:
. .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... .......... ....6 Letters . .......... .......... .......... .......... . .......... .......... .......... .......... .. 6 letters
George....
Walker....
BushII ...(the second; states who he is and WHAT he is)...6 Letters
666
fall on your faces and worship him, you liberal scum!!
CNN is working hard to suppress peaceful revolution.
*sigh* the GOP wing is evil
While it is an unsavory thing for the "news" to cover, I don't understand how it could possibly actually affect anything. The two candidates are so diametrically opposed on practically every issue that I refuse to believe anyone not living in a cave is actually undecided, and I assume the cave hermits won't show up to vote.
I have lost respect for CNN. They don't even attempt to hide their bias.
MSNBC/CNN/FAUX all do the repeated many times attack ads during every show the host expect for Keith O does the ads then the "panel" then the ads and then one or two people then the ads again to makes ure every little itsy bitsy attack must be written on the brain then the next host does the same. Then the "news anchor" does the repeat of the ads and on and on. With the reporting like it is and the host of the shows making the imprint on my brain possible through repeated showings is it any wonder I like comedy central with Stewert and Colbert for news along with Countdown of course with Keith O. Why these cable channels do this for entertainment of themselves is beyond me as they could also report on real world news happening like the wars and the way the enviorment is such a problem. It would be so much better to watch quality insead of the repeater crap which is lies and misrepresentations anyway.
Interestingly enough, the guys that wrote the "Left Behind" series have said that Obama ISN'T the antichrist. Their reasoning is silly (as is the notion that he might be the antichrist, but it is silly season). They say that the reason he isn't, is because the antichrist isn't American.. ..
Exactly, by all their accounts "the AntiChrist" is a Middle Eastern leader who arises from the Middle East.
Well...has anyone noticed that the right is also attempting to "prove" that Obama wasn't actually born in hospital in Hawaii as his birth certificate indicates, but was actually born in some foreign land a few weeks or days before?
If his mother was a citizen when he was born, he's a citizen unless he gets to be 18 and declares citizenship for some other country. So, why is it so important where the birth took place?
It's not... unless it's not about native citizenship and eligibility for the Presidency at all but about something else entirely.
Like being the AntiChrist.
This is an old republican trick. I can remember when accusations about President Carter being the Anti-Christ were being spread by the religious right.. It did cost him votes, which is all that matters to these folks. There is no way to disprove an accusation like this, but there is also no reason for a "news" organization to even bring it up, unless they are in it for the ratings. CNN should be ashamed.
I guess the Obama's campaign could start rumors that McCain is the re-incarnation of Saladin, the muslim defender of Jerusalem during the Crusades, but the muslim vote is small in this country still, and they are not voting for McCain anyway.
It was a disturbing segment... but I think trivial in the grand scheme.
Do not even begin to believe it is trivial. This is enough for most of the religious right to excuse their bigotry. Not to mention, it is an entirely irresponsible act on the part of a "news" organization.
knighthowl is correct. Crazytalk, for sure, but not trivial in the least.
Several million very politically active American voters' entire worldviews are built around apocalyptic interpretations of the Book of Revelation, where one can find mention of the "Antichrist".
I won't call it the story of the Antichrist, because the cryptic writing style of this particular part of the Bible isn't very coherent. Of course, that hasn't stopped its exploitation by power and money-hungry televangelists, nor the politicos with whom they're in cahoots.
I've long been saying that an effective way to neutralize the political power of these several million core Republican voters would be to suggest that Bush and/or Cheney are the Antichrist. That would taint all associated with them, including the current Republican Presidential nominee, as servers of Satan.
Looks like they've beaten the Democrats to it.
Unfortunately, this is the most important issue of this election. Can Obama be “framed” as a threat to “our way of life?”
Everyone who saw those images, even working out at the gym with the sound off, was affected with a negative reaction. For most people, it was not even on the conscious level. They will just have this uncomfortable feeling about Obama. After months of media exposure and 2 auto-biographical books, people will “know” more about him from those images than from all of the commentary.
