Gunning for the Nuns

Posted: 04/23/2012 1:34 pm

I was not at all surprised to read about the Vatican's fresh attempt to clamp down on nuns in the United States. When the class bully strikes out with the tough guys in the schoolyard, what, in his desperation, does he do? He moves on to the girls. A "Get the nuns!" strategy makes perfect sense at this point in time.

The Vatican is losing the war of public opinion in the pews. Prominent practicing Catholic politicians are refusing to budge on equal marriage rights and medical insurance coverage of contraception. The sexual abuse stories keep coming -- I think they are getting
uglier. In the United States, the Vatican has failed to muster adequate support in the pews for its (secular) political agenda. The Holy See's efforts to strong-arm American politicians have failed and are likely to backfire. Some of the Vatican's own bishops are refusing to campaign against equal marriage rights in their dioceses. The hierarchy itself is sharply divided. In the U.S., the Vatican has struck out with the president and its long-shot dream of an Opus Dei in the Executive Office has gone the way of ripples on a pond.

The Vatican needs to flex its muscles. More urgent, still, is its need to push tales of Vatican corruption, child molestation and news of its colossal failure to convince Catholics to vote in accordance with the Magisterium off of what we once called "the front pages." The Vatican needs to create fresh fear.

One Catholic fringe group has nothing at all to say about this week's reports of a Philadelphia bishop who covered up for a priest who stripped children naked, draped them in loincloths and whipped them in the service of recreating the Passion of Our Lord, but has its knickers in a twist about a "Three Stooges" film that casts a bikini-clad beauty and a Jewish, male comedian as Catholic nuns. (It's safe to assume our women religious would be more offended by the priest who whipped naked children in Christ's name than by Larry David's portrayal of one of their own.) But one need look no further than the Vatican's recent decision to stick it to the Leadership Conference of Women Religious in order to behold a truly obscene display of disrespect for women religious.

I admit I didn't like l nuns so very much during my days as a gum-snapping New York City Irish American schoolgirl in Catholic pleats -- and the feeling was mutual. As a young woman working as a teacher in Catholic schools, however, I had the opportunity to see nuns up close, and to note how much good they do. As a middle-aged woman active in parish life I have come to believe that it is in communities of religious women where one finds the most exemplary models of Roman Catholic faith and Christ-like conduct.

Nuns relinquish the opportunity to be wives and mothers and take vows of poverty in order to serve Christ without the pomp, perks and payoffs of priesthood. Many nuns are quite poor, have little vacation or recreation time. Most work very hard for low pay. Many nuns are quite well-educated, but unlike priests, who have always been exhorted to study, nuns have had to fight for education. In the context of medical issues and education of children, it is Roman Catholic nuns, not priests, who work in hospitals as health care professionals and and teach in schools. For very good reasons, the expertise of its women religious scares the Vatican.

Nuns are best and brightest of Roman Catholic religious.

One of the reasons Ratzinger is targeting nuns is that he knows that some convents are indeed Women's Ordination Movement think tanks. But there's more to it. There's the larger, pervasive misogyny of the hierarchy always seeking to ensure that women don't gain too much power; and there's the knowledge that nuns, not priests, drive catechesis in parishes. The Vatican needs women (nuns and lay women) to continue to prepare people for the sacraments, especially as it contends with the growing reluctance of even traditional Catholics to leave their children in the care of (male) priests. The Vatican is between a rock and a hard place in this. It lacks a male workforce adequate to run parishes and educate Catholic children, but if it can not arrest the erosion of doctrine brought about by what the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith sees as a facet of the "radical feminism" among women religious, the Vatican stands to lose a lot of doctrinal ground.

On the other hand, if the Vatican can create enough fear, it might retard women's ordination activism and thwart the trickle-down effect which results when "radical feminist" nuns are charged with indoctrination of the young. If nuns teach children preparing for confirmation that love between two Catholics of the same sex can be holy, for example, Catholic children might grow up thinking that being gay and married is not sinful. If nuns teach children that not every woman who terminates a pregnancy is a murderer, children might grow up having a more open view of abortion.

When it comes to the immediate future of the church in the U.S., nuns hold the cards. The Vatican has stacked the deck -- but nuns have found the workaround. The Vatican can not win without resorting to intimidation. Hence the need for Apostolic Visitations ("Inquisitions" technically) of 2009 and the current crackdown on nuns in the U.S.

Do women become nuns because they can't become priests? Yes and no. Many nuns, like men who those called to become deacons and brothers, do not feel called to the priesthood. The two vocations differ greatly. But many nuns who have felt called to the priesthood report having answered the call by becoming sisters. As women assume more and more leadership in the Church, many of these women are coming forward to teach, preach and minister in ways nuns have not traditionally undertaken. Women in charge of educating Catholics are finding greater opportunity to steer the church in the direction of women's ordination. It is easy to see why an 85-year-old pontiff might be vexed by the notion of nuns going rogue without concern for obtaining his imprimatur.

The Vatican (CDF) document devotes several syllables to the matter of hunting down "radical feminists." While I am encouraged that this term even appears in the creepy Vatican warrant, I find that it doesn't exactly describe the nuns I have encountered at masses celebrated by a woman priest. Although their bravery is astounding (they stand to lose everything if they are caught), these quiet, unassuming and humble ladies -- some of whom took their final vows long before the Second Vatican Council -- hardly come off as rabid radical feminists. They teach children in parishes, and work with the aged and indigent. They're the regular nuns all Catholics know; they merely happen to concur with the many Roman Catholic bishops, priests, nuns, theologians and millions of Catholics in the pews who believe that the Church has both the authority and the obligation to ordain women as priests.

When the class bully strikes out with the tough guys in the schoolyard, what, in his desperation, does he do? He moves on to the girls. But the fellows in the Vatican have their work cut out for them. It will take a lot more than a few raging bullies in miters to take these flying angel nuns down!

Although the Vatican struggles to keep nuns subjugated, it may have already forfeited this fight. Nuns are at the forefront of catechesis; they wield great power. Furthermore, their power is relatively untainted by the Vatican's fiscal improprieties, complicity in widespread child abuse, rape, homophobia and misogyny. They actually have credibility.

The Vatican fears women religious because they possess the moral authority the Vatican lacks.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. -- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7

You may not trust the bishops. You may seek power for women. You may hold a grudge over past abuses. But not everyone lives their lives with scales in their eyes weighing the evil their follow humans do.

The purpose of religious orders are not to seek social power. They are intended to provide a structure where it is easier to live a holy life. So the question isn't how much power they get for surrendering their sexual passions, but how much closer to God do they get.

Some fail in this. Perhaps most, for the life of a Christian is hard. Yet our failures are covered by Christ's sacrifice so we can lift ourselves from sin to achieve holiness.

The pope is right to question the willingness of nuns to continue the holy lives they started. Certainly the nuns are free to ignore him in this, but they need to understand such a dismissal is also a rejection of the Catholic lifestyle, for we trust our Christian brothers (especially the pope) even knowing they will fail. Love demands it.

I guess my long departed gay catholic-convert uncle had it about right. When VII didn't endorse contraception he knew how huge it was. Took down the crosses off the walls for two years. Then he put them back up again. Maybe he also knew that it would have to happen eventually. Behemoths move slowly. My uncle was one of the most gracious, kind, thoughtful people I'll ever know.

The catholic hierarchy are kind of like a bunch of drug addicts, except it's dogma not heroine. It has to get really bad before they hit bottom and the brains get that it's a matter of survival. Agreements can be changed.

I got two perspectives about nuns; they taught me most of my education to the 8th grade and used the ruler to do a lot of it too so I still live in fear of them. Then this crap starts, women are women and they should have the same rights as men no matter if they follow a mythological ideology that is used to further the christian ideal and destroy Native spirit throughout history across the US and elsewhere, it is their choice. Its like the school yard bully, he finds out he can't pick on his favorite anymore because his favorite found his courage to stand up to the bully so the bully finds someone else even weaker.

The headline should read "Catholic church hold women in low esteem. Women mysteriously surprised".

I'm sorry, but for the life of me I cannot understand why ANY woman would ever WANT to be a member of such totally misogynistic he-man women haters club. Their sick, twisted and hate filled views of human - and especially female - sexuality and biology made me run as fast from them as I could. The Bishops are an abomination to humanity - EVERY SINGLE ONE of them was responsible for covering up decades of child sexual abuse - each had the official vatican policy written down and secured in their safes for decades - and THESE are the people who the vatican considers the "True arbiters of holiness" (or some such phrase - bottom line is, they set the rules about holiness, the nuns should just meekly say "yessir!")

The RC Church has become an obscenity.
05:54 PM on 04/24/2012
Sorry, Ladies - I am sure that most of you are very good people, but for the life of me I cannot understand WHY you would ever join such a total he-man-woman-haters-club like the RC Church. Their brand and blending of such misogynistic and sick, twisted views on human - and especially female - sexuality and biology make me think that you all are either completely brainwashed from birth, or have no capacity for logical, sensible reasoning.

A woman worshiping in a RC Church is like a chicken worshiping in a Kentucky Fried Chicken.

I knew Ratzinger would be so conservative that he would drive wedges within the RCC. The US Bishops are following his lead. I'm not a Catholic, but this whole thing would have been averted if the Cardinals hadn't gone along to get along and made Ratzinger the Pope. Maybe they should have stayed in meditation and prayer much, much longer.

Keep up the bullying. But, remember, God made women as a companion to man and it looks like a lot of them (not the majority) are not happy with that. And, FYI, the Pope is God's closest representative on earth and throwing rocks at him is not very smart. Look around you. What has the masculinization of women gotten you? Yes, population control, sexual liberty, and all that goes with it is certainly a great part of this society, but to what ultimate purpose? A better standard of living? Where is it? We have gone from a basically moral society to the most perverse in the world. I say perverse because we have the ability spread our brand of immorality across the world. I know this will not get posted, but I feel better.

The Vatican plan is very simple and has worked in the distant past. The attack on LCWR represents an effort to silence and discredit the group. If the sisters form another group outside canon law, the new group will not be "official" and the Vatican can hope to split the sisters.

The next step is more diabolical. Anyone who joins the new group will be threatened and may suffer one of these: dispension of vows and firing them from their jobs, suppression of their orders and/or excommunication.

What will happen is hard to say. Cardinal McIntyre tried this in 1968 with the Immaculate Heart nuns. When the group would not agree to his demands which were in conflict with Vatican II, he had their vows dispensed and fired them. This amounted to 300 nuns or 90% of the order. This sisters formed another community for men and women. Law suits over who gets the property ensued. T

Right now I am sure the sisters are seeing lawyers to see who will control hospitals, schools, colleges and other holdings of the religious order. Much could depend on their unity and the willingness of pew Catholics to support the nuns.

the next two weeks could be very decisive in the history of the Catholic Church as we know it.

The way the bishops are going at the political scene, the election could be a referendum on the bishops themselves, especially in Catholic areas.

I know the idea has come up for years, but now, with the Vatican losing it's grip on the US faithful, it may be time to breakaway from Rome and finally establish an American Catholic Church. The Vatican can stay in the 14th century.

Ever hear of Savonarola? He lived about 500 years ago. Stood against the advancements of the Renaissance and for regressive ideas about life and religion. Was finally burned at the stake. Good riddance. Long live renaissances everywhere.

Just received a mag from USC about an alumna who was a nun, who just died at 95. The most interesting part of the story: in the 70's she and THREE HUNDRED NUNS asked to be relieved of their vows. The nun continued to work among the poor.

I say: LEAVE THE RCC AND START YOUR OWN CHURCH, LADIES!
04:13 PM on 04/24/2012
Your call to arms is the right one....if you don't like the orthodoxy of a particular faith...pack it up and start your own...a la Martin Luther, Henry VII, even Mohammed for Pete's sake but please, please, please stop with all the hysteria. This is the church; these are the rules; this is how it is and how it has always been and (God willing) how it will always be. I am not endorsing the failures of men in leadership postions to do the right thing but rather the objective and true legacy of Jesus Christ as believed by Roman Catholics. Stop saying you are a Roman Catholic if you do not beleive in the core tenets of the faith. This is not a subjective, take what you like and ignore the rest, sort of faith (efforts of many people to make it so notwithstanding). You do not have to practice our Roman Catholic faith, but leave us who wish to do so alone and go do your own thing. That includes these nuns and anyone else (clergy or not) who urges a progressive agenda. This is America; if L. Ron Hubbard can start a religion based on people from outer space I have little doubt that a group of energetic, well educated, "former" Caholics can do it too.
06:24 PM on 04/24/2012
I understand your point, but that position would result in no institution - church or otherwise - EVER changing to meet the times.

In fact, the RCC HAS changed since its inception, in major and minor ways: e.g. there was no requirement of clerical celibacy for centuries, the Inquisition (Ratsinger's specialty) no long tortures people, and no one has to eat fish on Fridays.

But frankly, I have a hard time understanding why anyone would want to be part of an organization that tells them they are inferior, have no rights, and to sit down and shut up. Ugh.

I agree. These nuns who refuse full communion with the Church and should formally recognize that fact.

They will still be our Christian sisters outside the church, but perhaps they could be happier. There really is little room in the RCC for those who seek power.

Christ's sacrifice covers even the sin of heresy.
05:58 PM on 04/29/2012
"There really is little room in the RCC for those who seek power."

Did you type that correctly??????????? As far as I can see, the Vatican at least is TOTALLY about power. It's about nothing BUT power!!!

"pervasive misogyny of the hierarchy always seeking to ensure that women don't gain too much power"
It isn't pervasive misogyny of the hierarchy. It is pervasive misogyny of the Bible. Misogyny is at the core of the Old Testament, but also of the New. Just think about Saint Paul. Jesus was a men. He elected 12 male apostles. The gospels were written by four men. What else? Why this interest in belonging to a club that clearly reject your values? Why this interest in making that club 'flexible'? If you don't like it, if the nuns don't like it, just form a different club, one not founded on the Bible.

Well, part of that has to be laid at the feet of Constatine, and the Council of Nicea...they cut out many references of women in powerful teaching positions (Mary Magdalen, Thecla, etc) and other gospels that did not mesh with the power structure/theology/book they were aiming for. Historically, the earliest beginnings of what is now the RC was fairly equitable...but with time, the balanced solution evaporated. I agree that the nuns should form their own church, or that America create its own RC, and split from Rome. Then the nuns, and the monks, and lay people can assist others with 21st century ideas/thoughts/etc.

I do not know where you got your information about the Council of Nicea, but you have been misinformed. The Church honors both Sts. Mary Magdalen and Thecla and has for centuries. The Orthodox Church honors Mary Magdalen as "equal to the apostles." There is a great deal of devotion to St. Thecla within the Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch. The view that the Church began as a kind of feminist paradise which was taken over by a bunch of sexist men who wanted to oppress women is a myth created by people who have not studied the history of the Church or who have been so warped by their ideology that they are unable to produced a scholarly and balanced interpretation of Christian history.
