On the eve of this groundbreaking election so many of us are still holding our breath and "waiting to exhale." It's been a drama filled many month race to the White House that has pitted people against one another within the same party, and between parties with far reaching implications for the future of this country and its society. Never before has there been such discontent among the American people. They are besieged by economic hardship and fear for the future long enduring a war that they do not support under the leadership of the most unpopular president elect, George W. Bush.

There is a groundswell of background noise coming from the right, the left, the conservatives, the liberals, the hawks, the peaceniks. How indeed does one find their way in the morass of information and the emotions that are welling up throughout this land? The quandary of the closing polls begins to make more sense if one looks at it through this perspective.

How does the American voting public make their way out of the darkness and into the potentially glorious sunshine of the future? How do they learn again to trust their political leaders and the media? Who do they listen to? Where do they go with their angst, frustration and even rage? Do they turn to things that are familiar, or do they leap into the untested future? These are the tough choices before the American voters who have been purposefully misled, misinformed and treated like serfs in a kingdom of the ruling class for eight years. Former founding Presidents must be spinning in their graves as the Constitution has been tested during this administration. Many are ashamed that they did not see behind the masks and believed the pabulum they were spoon-fed. The documentation and false reporting of weapons of mass destruction were an atrocity.

That may be why the Department of Justice has been called out to many counties and election polls to monitor Tuesday's events. Moreover, it is why local police have been put on alert, and perhaps even the National Guard for whatever results occur on that evening. Will people take to the streets regardless of the outcome? Never before have emotions run so high and been so close to surface of this week's election. This is our country's chance to regain our position in the world. This is our chance to regain our economic stability. This is our chance for Main Street to matter again.

We all want to believe that Obama will carry the day on Tuesday. We want to believe the pundit poll predictions. We want to believe in a landslide. Remarkably, it is not over for McCain. He is a scrapper and much more like the infamous "come back kid." He is going to the mat for this last election of his career. Sadly, it is the way that he and his campaign are doing it that is creating such discord, discontent and distrust. The dirty fighting is ripping our country apart during an unprecedented time of vulnerability, and feeding the emotions of fear and rage. Will the real John McCain please reappear, and fight a just and moral last battle? We knew him when, and are perplexed.

Remember Senator McCain and Senator Barack Obama -- it is not the 1960's any longer and there a fragility to our country and economy. Emotions are running high. Everything is at stake. So whoever wins on Tuesday evening will need to reach back across the abyss, and make peace for the good of this country. We want a return to economic stability, we want a return to good old American values, we want to stand tall in the world, we want to be welcomed, and we want a country that is united.

We know what is keeping us all up at night on the eve of this unprecedented election.
