Why I Hate Jeans (And All Pants For That Matter)

Just hear me out, OK?

I never understand when people say, "I'm just a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl." Like being this girl implies that they are low-maintenance and crave easy-to-wear, comfortable clothing. You know what's low maintenance? A dress. One piece of material. A single garment. No matching necessary. You know what's comfortable? An elastic waist.

Ever since I was little, I hated jeans. I owned one pair growing up (thanks to a salesgirl at The Gap who likened them to leggings), and I loathed them. My mother and I would have fights because I refused to wear them -- she would complain that she spent good money on them and that I was being unreasonable; I told her it felt like wearing a straightjacket on my legs. The battle continued until I eventually grew out of them.

My dislike for jeans really comes from my childhood (yes, Mom and Dad, this is your fault too). Since my parents sent me to a school with uniforms from the age of nine until I was 17, I had to wear a skirt and knee socks every day for nine years. Pants were foreign to me. Sure, on weekends I would wear the occasional pair of leggings or corduroys, but the majority of my youth was spent without much on my legs -- and everyone knows those are the formative years.

It may seem like jeans are the real target of my disdain here, but really it's just pants in general. When I get home from work, within 20 seconds of walking through the door, my pants are off. Although at first this left my roommate slightly perplexed, she has since adopted my no pants rule -- we always joke there should be a sign in our apartment that says "Drop your pants."

That said, I do own a few pairs of pants and more specifically, a few pairs of jeans. I have succumbed to societal pressures (and the reality of living in a place that has snow in November). But every morning before I put on pants (or, heaven forbid, jeans) I have to talk myself into it. It usually takes about ten minutes of me trying on every other option. But then I realize that Mother Nature is sending me a sign: It's hailing, raining or snowing and a pair of tights just isn't going to cut it.

I know what you're thinking -- why not try a pair of boyfriend jeans? In my opinion boyfriend jeans are for people who can't commit to sweatpants. How about those jeans with so much elastic they feel like leggings? They're an urban legend (unless we're talking about jeggings, but don't get me started on those).

Most girls swear by jeans. But take a moment to reminisce on the number of times you've eaten a big meal and popped open the button on your favorite pair of skinnies -- maybe you're not such a "jeans and T-shirt kind of girl" after all.
