All hands are on deck in the progressive community working to surprise the pundits and stave off too many Republican victories on election day. And all the last minute work really does matter, as I will document in my next post about the closeness of margins in swing Congressional races even in years where one party or the other is making big gains. We all need to keep focused and keep our nose to the grindstone, because this election's fate is not yet decided. The president is out on the campaign trail working his butt off; the Democratic leadership in Congress is raising money and helping out in every way they can; the staffers for the Democratic National Committee, Organizing for America, and other party committees are out in the field working their hearts out in races all over the country. They are joined by activists from the netroots and every kind of progressive organization knocking on doors, making calls, coming to rallies, and doing everything in their power to turn the tide. It makes me proud that so many people are working so hard even when- in fact, especially when- the going has gotten so tough.

However, I just need to stop for a moment and quickly note, because it will become hugely more important in the weeks and months following the election, that not everyone in the administration is on the same team. All the passion so many people are showing makes it all the more galling to have certain as yet to be found out people in the Treasury department, people who owe their jobs to all of you who worked so hard to get President Obama elected in 2008, stabbing us all in the back in the very last days of this campaign. Check out Zach Carter's superb post this morning on the snakes in the Treasury Department who are working to undermine the president, his new appointee Elizabeth Warren, and all of us in the progressive world who are so excited about the potential of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau right before the election. Their petty leaks and nasty attacks are the worst kind of Washington BS. They made a rotten attack on Raj Date, who is a brilliant, progressive, and committed man who was a leader in making the financial reform bill stronger. As to the office paint job leak, it is just laughable: I was over at Elizabeth's very plain office in the standard government building where she is spending 95% of her time, and she hasn't even taken the time to put a picture on the wall. She is a frugal, modest Oklahoman who is so driven by the work that she probably wouldn't even notice if someone repainted her office. And the media hound charge is just funny: senior White House officials told me weeks ago that they wanted Elizabeth to be as visible as possible in the final days before the election because she is a strong voice for the middle class. Literally all the media bookings for her have come at the request of the White House communications shop.

I have always told people that working in the Clinton White House, I met some of the best people I have ever known and some of the worst. There are people who are in government for all the right reasons, because they want to make the country a better place and really help improve the lives of regular people. Elizabeth Warren is one of the very best of that group. And there are people who are in government because they are looking to brownnose the industries they are supposed to be regulating so they can get a really high paying lobbyist job after a few years in government. It is very clear that some of the people in Treasury, certainly the people doing these absurd attacks, are in the latter category. They don't care about screwing over the president and the Democratic Party in the days before the election, and they certainly don't care about helping consumers. What they care about is sucking up to the Wall Street bankers who they hope will give them a sweet job sometime soon.

I have a message for the leakers at Treasury, though: you are playing with fire. The two people closest to the president at the White House, Pete Rouse and Valerie Jarrett, are huge fans of Warren, and I know these leaks have caught their attention. I would love to see a serious investigation into these leaks once the election is over, and it just might happen. And whatever happens on the inside, the entire progressive community- bloggers, members of Congress, labor and consumer organizations- have Elizabeth Warren's back. Right now, unlike you leakers, we are focused on winning elections, but after the election, we will be gunning for you.

Well said, Mike Lux!...And those sniveling, cowardly, sneaking leakers at Treasury, who apparently spend their time conniving and plotting rather than doing the work of the people that they were hired to do, will soon be dragged into the harsh sunlight of public opinion where they will be exposed for the complete, spineless, worthless frauds that they are. These people don't belong on the public payroll, rather, if justice prevails, they'll find themselves in the unemployment lines.

Mike, Thanks so much for your perspectives here. Its so refreshing to hear voices from those who really know what's happening versus all the pontificating that often happens here by those who are simply painting in their projections. May the election and the internal struggle both end up with the people's interests (versus big corporations) victorious - and in this election, that means unapologetic Dems.

This is the true battle for the soul of our country. Power is where the money is. All you have to do is look at Charles Koch and his "secret" invitation to fellow billionaires to attend a meeting where they pool their endless resources in order to stay in control of policy making in the U.S. With Charles Koch worth 26.5 billion, his top 12 guests were easily worth 100 billion. And what are the goals of their political activism? Number one - continue to keep their wealth as free from taxes as possible, Number two - create a government powerless to regulate corporate abuse, Number three - privatize everything to keep the people's money funneled into Wall Street and their pockets, increasing their wealth and sending Americans to the poor house, Number four - create an authoritarian government to keep the people (and wages) under their control.

The simplicity of their goals and perseverance over the long haul with their money makes them a Goliath for sure. Add to that a Supreme Court helping their cause. The power of a united people boycotting their corporate world and electing officials determined to stand up to them is our only hope. Their money however, buys expert advice on how to keep the people divided and thinking this is about religion, gun control and white supremacy. A polarized people keeps the corporate world in control. Hang in there Elizabeth, it will be a bumpy ride.

The simplicity of their goals, perseverance in winning over the long haul, and the power of their money makes them a Goliath. Add to that a Supreme Court with enough members to vote in their favor and you have an battle that could only be won by a monumental united effort of the people. But corporate money buys unending advice from experts on how to bamboozle and polarize the people into thinking this is about religion, gun control and white supremacy. A divided people keeps corporations in control. Hang in there Elizabeth, it will be a bumpy ride.

Is Treasury complaining because Warren might actually get something done?

Geithner and Treasury need to understand their job is not to cozy up to the banks but to regulate them in the interests of protecting the American people.

This sounds like the dysfunctional attitude at Minerals Management Service where Bush-era holdovers were cozying up to BP rather than taking their regulatory responsibilities seriously.

Warren can take care of herself, but if Geithner doesn't turn around this attitude it sounds like the clock is ticking on him.

Where does it say Geithner had anything to do with this? Or anyone in particular for that matter. The article cannot provide one name. Gossip.

Strange - whenever the truth is exposed about the progressive agenda Americans reject it. The ideals have been packaged & rewrapped and repackaged - even now attempting to force feeding it... yet, America rejects the fundamental premise each & every time...

What part of this do progressives not get?

I would truly love to see a specific set of short questions & ideals to summarize the progressive agenda. Not the bs spewed about equality - global warming utopian bs - but REAL WORLD ideals...

I don't think the issues cause the contentions as much as the real-world mechanics of getting there... Sadly, the contention feeds the polarization - and the polarization is a key component for allowing the "elite" to control the pawns. Those elite are on both sides of the isle and they don't really care about the pawns. The pawns are only there to serve them. Guess who those pawns are...?

To the best of my knowedge, I was the first blogger to raise alarm about the strangeness and unprecedented deceit in selecting the culprits of banking interests to make public policy towards protecting the public interests. They sabotagued financial reform. Now the only possible reform of a consumer rights group is being undermined as it is being born. Where is the President? If he is where he appears to be, he must tread carefully or be impeached and removed from Office.
The banking fraud coverup is still alive and active. Geithner, Bernanke, Summers and a number of other lesser administration are subject to inquiry, indictment and imprisonment for their role in this obvious conspiracy.

Did you intentionally mention sexually intercourse and lieing about it as an impeachable offense? Selfishness and the thirst for naked power has replaced good government.

I wish more people would write stuff like this calling out the people who are working against the working people. The layers of beurocracy give alot of cover to backstabbers and agents of the corporations to hide in and undermine even the most well intentioned administration.
