Worse Than Watergate?

What's Your Reaction:

A couple of weeks back I suggested that the strong possibility that the Chamber and Rove's American Crossroads group were taking and using money from foreign companies for their scores of millions of dollars in attack ads was the biggest story of this election cycle. This money comes from undisclosed sources, and the secretive nature of these millions in contributions raises huge doubts about who these sources are, what their motives are, and what industries and countries they come from. We know the Chamber is taking a minimum of over $800,000 from foreign companies, and the total is likely many millions more -- the 800 is what researchers have been able to find from a smattering of public materials, but we know there is more the Chamber isn't telling us. The Chamber and Rove deny they are using foreign money for their ad campaign, but since they vehemently, adamantly refuse to disclose their donors, we can't know the truth. If it is not foreign money, fine: just tell us how much Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Bank of America, BP, Massey Mining, Prudential and all the rest of your corporate special interest friends are giving.

The White House and other Democrats have been right to jump all over this: this is as fundamental issue to our democracy as there is. Tim Kaine raised the stakes again today, suggesting that the potential scandal involved was as big a deal as Watergate. My only disagreement is that in many ways, this is worse. The slush fund money Dick Nixon's operation raised and spent was penny ante compared to the money being raised today.

Corporate special interests are trying to buy this election. Whenever another nasty attack ad comes on the tube paid for the Chamber, American Crossroads, or some groups with a mysterious name you have never heard, ask yourself:

  • Where did they get the money for that ad?

  • Why did the companies giving millions of dollars to run this ad want to help the Republican candidate they are helping?

  • What sweetheart deals will the candidates they are helping be doing for those big contributors?

  • Why should we believe anything we are seeing on this ad, given the people paying for it don't want you to know who is behind it?

If this sleazy, secretive strategy works for Rove and the Chamber, and if nothing is done to require disclosure of these fat cat donors, our democracy truly is in trouble for a long time to come. Let's hope the voters ask themselves those questions.

The Republican majority on the Supreme Court has the most direct responsibility for the horrendous damage being done to our democracy in this particular election cycle. They knew exactly what they were doing and we're seeing the inevitable results. But Karl Rove and the Chamber of Commerce couldn't succeed without the quiescence of the so-called mainstream media. Of course, the media stars themselves are swimming in mega-bucks, so what do they care? Rather than comforting the afflicted and afflicting the comfortable, most — from network talking heads to leading columnists — run in the opposite direction. They have abandoned their journalistic responsibility to tell the whole truth and nothing but. It is an egregious breach of duty but who is holding them accountable? The belated election year strategy of frightened Democrats is no substitute for widespread outrage among the electorate. Thomas Jefferson would shudder in disbelief.

The mainstream media has been very obtuse about this story i.e., Bob Sheiffer's comments about "is that the best you got" in reference to the Chamber of Commerce. This just shows you the value of blogs and lessor known independent media outlets.

Republicans are not interested in helping average Americans. They, along with their corporate masters, want to eliminate the Middle Class and put workers back on subsistence wages, you know, like back in the good ol' days before FDR and those pesky unions. Democrats, especially conservative and corporate Democrats, have not been doing enough for 'the little people' too often beholden to fat cat contributors to remember their base. The Democrats need to come home and we, the people, need to show them the way. The scandal Mr. Lux is trumpeting here is worthy of his clarion call, but this example of Republican perfidy won't surprise any Progressive/Liberal I know. If his trumpet can wake up independents on the fence or mobilize Democratic voters then it's well worth sounding. But it's not just voters who need to wake up, Democratic politicians need to wake up too. Republicans are never going to help someone like me or most Americans. And if Democrats are going to help us we have to make them do it. If you have a Democratic House Rep. or Senator call or write them. Tell them you need them to fight for you. Tell them to come home.

Pic in your mind a DNC/WH campaign meeting, mood is grim. Your side is down, and looking to turn things around. The pollster reports Health care? Nope. They hate your stand on that. The economy? Thumbs down. Foreign policy? Who cares. Campaign contributions by foreigners? Turns out most voters don't like them. They don't think it's an important issue, but, hey, nothing else works. So let's go with it.

Obama and Co. on the campaign trail and on Sunday interview programs are charging that outfits like the US CoC are smuggling foreign money into the campaign. Their evidence? Well, there isn't much, as even The NYT, The WaPo and factcheck.org agree. The smoking gun? The US CoC collects $100,000 in membership dues from foreigners out of a $200,000,000 operating budget and spends some of that budget on campaign ads. But Axelrod says it's up to the chamber to prove it's innocent. CBS said "this is peanuts", wonder why?

Two problems here. One is that the 2008 Obama campaign, by deliberately not using the address verification software most enterprises use to determine it's really your credit card, took in a lot more illegal foreign money than its rivals. Obama projecting he's own sins on he's opponents? Attack evil rich people and ignore the fact that Obama carried voters with incomes over $200,000 in 2008?

Well can't run on our record or the issues of import to the voters whats left? MUD! because if we did REPO SUPERMAJORITES!

How should we fill in the blanks? You can suggest anything. Truth is what we are missing.

Anything Rove is involved with is sleazy, and crooked. He knows no other way of doing "business" For a college dropout, he holds a lot of power, just like Palin. The big difference is that Palin is a puppet, Rove is in it for the $$$.

After he was elected to the United States Senate, Obama involved Rezko in a land deal that enabled the senator to buy his current home on Chicago's South Side. Rove never did anything as sleazy as this. Even Obama has since called his decision to involve Rezko "a bone-headed mistake

After being appointed President, Bush and his team facilitated the death of 3000 US citizens, and started an illegal war that killed another 69,000. He was just standing in the footsteps of his father, George H W "October Suprise" Bush. I don't think you want to play tit-for-tat here, the hole you're in is so deep you're looking up to the red guy with a pitchfork.

The President's plan-take away subsidies/tax loopholes for outsourcers by Multi-Natl Corp who outsource our jobs. By paying their fair share of taxes companies in Am wd see tax lower than 10% which wd make them competative with other nations, bring back jobs and make trade work for us.

The riis all about a 'right to privacy' that the right has been denying for years.
The fact is that foreign corporations and governments are buying the election for the subversive GOP to pursue an antiAmerican agenda and destroy the country.
Want China and Saudi Arabia to determine American policy? Vote Republican.
If you want America to determine its own policy, vote Democratic.

But of course they are all for what benefits them, and for nothing that benefits the American people whom they hate.

Lux why not do some real reporting. Tell everyone why according the FEC records show donations to Obama from Monir and Hossam Edwan for the amount of $33,000. Obama claims he returned the money but look at his own FEC report, there is no evidence that this money was ever returned. Al-Jazeera did a follow up with the brothers just recently in Gaza and they clearly stated they were never issued refunds. So why would the FEC report not show a refund and why was Obama accepting money from non US citizens for his campaign?

Here is the proof found deep in the FEC website... http://atlasshrugs2000.typepad.com/atlas_shrugs/2008/08/in-digging-deep.html

So you make up lie about th COC and its many hard working members such as myself but when your President violates the same laws and there is proof, you ignore it. Sort of convenient don't you think?

The issue isn't Obama, its the probable millions that the coc is using to subvert our democracy. If you want to pursue the Obama issue, by all means do so, just don't use that technique to try to divert this discussion.

Jmbo the issue is Obama that is why the COC is spending money on ads that on his policies. AtlasShrugs points how the hypocrisy of the DNC, Obama, Axelrod, Gov. Kain, Puffpost, and all the other liberals trying to prove a negative. It is the classic shell game using misdirection don't look at what we did on the left, only pay attention to the right. To me actions speak louder then words. So the case is the DNC have been convicted and found guilty, several fundraisers, and blunders for Bill & Hill, Al Gore, Kerry, and even Obama are sitting in jails in the US and overseas.

So how can Obama say the COC is breaking the law but offer no proof, nothing? That is nothing but slander and libel on a massive scale.

This is the most ridiculous line of attack and quite an act of desperation. This is the kind of "yellow" politicking that people should be ashamed of. Like the swift boat attacks against John Kerry, flailing attacks meant to distract rather than substantive debates on policy are exactly what infuriates many of us. In Maryland the Chamber is actually backing Frank Kratovil, a Democrat over his Rep opponent. Continued stupid attacks will only serve to prevent the Democrats from using their own entities

After the way the the DNC is demonizing the chamber, the chamber should pull all of the substantial sum it's giving to Dems, and all Dems getting chamber money should send it back.

Also, since the chamber is now officially the devil, the WH should cancel all the many events it holds with them all over the world. The next one is in Israel, and the Sec of Commerce and various diplomats are attending.

Actually, no. As long as the ads themselves don't go over the line, why should I care who said it. And to be honest, I think if most of it was going to democrats we would not be hearing about this argument.
