Unprecedented! 54 House Dems Call on Israel to End Siege of Gaza

What's Your Reaction:
Read More: Blockade , Ellison , Gaza , World News

This is unprecedented.

Fifty-four House members are defying AIPAC and calling on President Obama to lift the deadly blockade of Gaza. Specifically, the House Members ask that Obama pressure Israel to permit:

* Movement of people, especially students, the ill, aid workers, journalists, and those with family concerns, into and out of Gaza;

* Access to clean water, including water infrastructure materials,

* Access to plentiful and varied food and agricultural materials;

* Access to medicine and health care products and suppliers;

* Access to sanitation supplies, including sanitation infrastructure materials;

* Access to construction materials for repairs and rebuilding;

* Access to fuel;

* Access to spare parts;

* Prompt passage into and out of Gaza for commercial and agricultural goods; and

* Publication and review of the list of items prohibited to the people of Gaza.

In short, the courageous 54 want the blockade lifted.

Please take a look at the list of these legislators who will, no doubt, catch hell from powerful AIPAC types in their districts and, more significantly, among their donor base.

Also note this. The fact that your favorite liberal is not among the 54 does not mean he or she disagrees with their braver colleagues. It only means that they are not ready to stand up and be counted.

The 54 deserve our thanks as does J Street and Americans for Peace Now, which supported the House effort that was led by three Minnesotans: Keith Ellison, James Oberstar, and Betty McCollum.

Interestingly there is no mention of the fact that Egypt also blockades Gaza whom they share a 20 km border with.

These 54 Congressmen are anti-Israel and most likely hate Jewish people. Keith Ellison was with the Nation of Islam. I rest my case.

We will start a movement to get them out of office. Wait and see. Also I am sure if you look at their voting records it will show them for what they are.

Israel protects herself from suicide bombings, and rocket attacks and these 64 want Israel to let its guard down. The Palestinians are Arabs who were kicked out of Jordan. With all of the $ the Arabs have from oil they could easily build a country for them, but the main goal is to destroy Israel.

Remember several years ago some Palestinians found a large sea turtle that was washed up on the beach. They tortured this turtle for hours, and then slit its throat to drink the blood thinking it will give them better potency. And these are the people who want to live "peacefully" with the Israelis? They will do the same thing to them.

for those who want to thanks the house rmembers who initiate this letter, Keith Ellison, Betty Mc collum and Jim Oberstar , all the three are from Minnesota.
this blockade must end, is it possible that in 2010, people can be put in big jail for more than 3years with no where to go, there is no reason, tou cannot explain this, like terrorism, shoah, these kind of acts cannot be justified.
How rockets launched into the desert can be the reason to put more than a million of innocent people in starvation, I sincerely tried to understund but never succed .
and for the people who are justifing this I want to say that the resistance to occupation is a right that the UN and international law garante, even if there is no israeli soldier in Gaza, this part of palestine is a part of nation (the west bank) so resistance is a right until the end of occupation of west bank.

I'll be spending some time sending letters to thank these 54 reps. Its about time!!!! The siege on Gaza must be lifted and the occupation must end.
06:15 AM on 01/27/2010
Great stuff, gang of 54!
01:09 AM on 01/27/2010
MJ Rosenberg,
Thank you for publishing the word about the very brave, the 54! All professional organizations should be ashamed of themselves for advocating anything less than what is laid out so beautifully in this letter about the unbearable siege imposed by the IDF upon the Palestinian people, their elders & children in Gaza. President Obama, are you up to the challenge of pressuring the Israeli govt. to lift this cruel siege that is doing no credit to the ideals or practices of the American people.

GOD BLESS THE 54. I hope their numbers grow to be 100!!!!!!

You're probably thinking of the Senate, which has 100 Senators. The House of Representatives has 435 voting Representatives. You might want to learn the difference, though: it's pretty important.

Hallelujah! dare I say the beginning of the end?

What is scary is that there are 54 members of the House who are for this thing! They don't deserve our thanks but our foot in their butts as we vote them out of office.
11:41 PM on 01/26/2010
What's really scary is that it means there's still about 400 House members too cowardly to stand up to AIPAC
11:47 PM on 01/26/2010
You mean 400 House members who refuse to pressure Israel into allowing more weapons into Gaza to be shot at the civilians of southern Israel?
12:52 AM on 01/27/2010
Israel can do no wrong huh?
10:05 PM on 01/26/2010
Well, looks like whoever runs against John Tierney next election gets my vote.
11:33 PM on 01/26/2010
I bet John's just shaking in his boots
09:22 PM on 01/26/2010

why should they demand anything from the Palestinians to ask Israel to stop doing something that is inhumane? How does not allowing food and medicine in to innocent palestinian civilians who have nothing to do with "rockets" and just want to live their lives making Israel any safer? Don't the Palestinians have a right to be safe?
11:49 PM on 01/26/2010
When did shooting rockets at civilians become "humane?" That's what the Palestinians have been doing for years.

Israel does allow food and medicine into Gaza. Did you know that Gazan terrorists attack the crossings in order to prevent humanitarian aid from getting into the Gaza Strip? Pretty interesting behavior for an allegedly starving people.

What Palestian mother fears that her child will be blown up on a bus on the way to school? Or what Palestinian parent fears their child will blown up while dancing at a nightclub? Well, maybe the parents who fire rockets from their children's schoolyard, I guess. Perhaps if the Palestinians had not destroyed the infrastructure left when the settlers were forceably removed, they would have hospitals and greenhouses. But instead they chose to destroy them and buy more bombs.

I suppose you aren't satisfied with the other gazillion and one pro-Israeli postures that have originated from the Congress and Senate.
07:51 PM on 01/26/2010
Could it be that people are finally starting to realize how inhumane Israel has become? This is encouraging because without showing some semblence of fairness from the united states there will never be peace in the middle east.
