I look forward to watching New Girl every Tuesday as part of my weekly dose of TV comedy. What douchey things will Schmidt say this week? How quirky and awkward can Jess be? Will Winston finally begin to find professional success outside of playing basketball (according to this week's episode, yes!) so that he can then achieve personal and romantic success as well? Or the age-old question (pun intended) of whether or not Nick is really just a very boyish looking 82-year old man.
While this may not seem like the most thrilling plot sequence for a television show, New Girl is quite cleverly written and pretty darn witty. I was very impressed with last season (especially because a lot of first seasons really blow), and while this season has definitely kept me guffawing regularly, so far it hasn't quite topped the previous. There's no doubt that this show is driven by the eccentricities of the characters. Even though Zooey Deschanel is supposedly the main character, this is definitely an ensemble show. None of the characters would work without the others there to react to their oddball habits.
Yet I find myself wondering if this is a downhill trend; charming can sometimes turn into predictable after a while. I mean it's a given that Schmidt will take off his shirt and/or try to inadvertently get back together with Cece in every episode. And is it quite possible that Jess's awkward hipster persona is on the road to becoming irritating and overdone? Will we get tired of her bursting into song at random, and often inappropriate, moments?
After watching this week's episode where Jess and Cece explore the possibility that they may soon be barren in only the third decade of their lives, my apprehensions were put at ease for now. When Jess cries out (spoiler alert!) that she is the "egg queen" in a Satchmo-esque voice while simultaneously moving her head in a rigid sideways spasm, it's pretty damn hilarious. I don't see monotony encroaching anytime soon.
I would also really like to hear more of Nick's Z is for Zombie novel, which I happen to think was incredibly insightful. I mean zoos are the best!
