Todd Akin Exposes the True Agenda of the Republican Party

Posted: 08/21/2012 5:20 pm

Over the weekend, U.S. Senate candidate, Rep. Todd Akin (R-Mo.), shared his belief that women rarely get pregnant from "legitimate" rape.

His outrageous comments went viral immediately. Although the Republican Party scrambled to distance themselves from his position, these offensive statements reflect an anti-choice agenda that has, and will continue to rob women of their reproductive rights if we do not pay close attention today and on November 6.

Tonight, the Republican Platform Committee is meeting to vote on their objectives for the next four years, including their position on abortion.

The Republican Party Platform is expected to include its usual support for a Human Life Amendment that would effectively ban abortion nationwide, in almost all circumstances, without exception for rape and incest. What every American needs to know right now is that this dangerous platform has been repeatedly endorsed by Mitt Romney (R- Mass.), and reflects the position of his running mate Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.).

Just last year, Rep. Ryan teamed up with Rep. Akin to co-sponsor an extreme anti-choice bill, H.R. 3, which would essentially redefine "rape" and prevent certain survivors of rape from accessing abortion services.

In fact, when given the chance to apologize for his outrageous comment, Rep. Akin explained that when he said "legitimate" rape, he really meant "forcible" rape -- the new definition put forward in the bill he cosponsored with Rep. Ryan.

And what's worse, Ryan has cast 59 votes on reproductive rights legislation, all of them anti-choice. Rep. Ryan also co-sponsored a couple of "personhood" bills, such as the "Sanctity of Human Life Act" that, if passed and enacted into law, would end legal abortion in almost all circumstances with no exception for rape or incest.

Make no mistake, the reprehensible views voiced by Rep. Todd Akin echo the true positions of the Romney-Ryan ticket.

These men and the Republican Platform Committee have pandered to the extreme positions of a small percentage of American voters, and tonight, they will do it again.

American women and their families must be aware that if Romney and Ryan are campaigning toward November 6 on this platform, they have every intention of a continued War on Women.

Christianity Republican Style

The ten commandments

1. You shall have no other gods before me… EXCEPT for Ronald Reagan
2. You shall not make for yourself any carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them…….. EXCEPT for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
3. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain…… EXCEPT when you use me and my name to gain REPUBLICAN votes
4. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy…. GO to Church and pretend to be filled with love ( but only on this day……for on all other days we must hate all who are not white and Christian)
5. Honor your father and your mother….BUT if you have to sell them out for profit it is OK
6. You shall not murder…..unless you support the NRA
7. You shall not commit adultery……. Unless you can without it getting TWEETED out for the world to see
8. You shall not steal…..from the rich, only from the poor by cutting much needed social programs
9. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor…..unless it will further your own agenda
10. You shall not covet your neighbor’s house…..you should just support the banks in foreclosing on it.

“A woman's body is not a political toy.....it is not a prop for vote gathering......it is not public property.

A woman's body is her own personal piece of real estate that she Owns and has the right to control and do with what she wants. No one person. One political party. One government. Or one country has the right to dominate it.

We better wake up America. Look at how few women's rights there are in other countries........this is a dangerous path”

Todd Akin is a dinosaur. He is everything that is wrong with the political atmosphere in Washington.Holding him up as the poster boy for anything but ignorance is just wrong. The republicants are doing just fine with letting the people know exactly where they stand. Why try to make Akin the poster boy?Romney is far worse for so many reasons.Let him hang himself, along with everyone that hated him till he was their only shot.He isn't any better now than he was when everyone said he was the worst of a bad lot.He still is.

Any woman who would vote for a Republican, given the extreme positions the GOP has in their War Against Women's rights...

...clearly is completely ignorant of current events, was raised in a household of browbeating into one narrow right wing mindset, or must vote as her "man" demands she do to be considered a "legitimate" mate to him and therefore lives in a constant state of fear and brow-beating in the relationship.

The fact that Romney/Ryan both condemned the comments of Atkins doesn't mean that they have a more lenient view on abortion. They both adhere to a total outright ban on all abortions now. That is going to be the republican platform for 2012. It really doesn't matter that some republicans didn't like his language on the definition of an actual rape. What matters is their agenda and actions with respect to this issue. So, if a woman gets pregnant, (by whatever means), and finds that she must terminate the pregnancy for her own health, or because she may be carrying a fetus with serious medical conditions it will no longer be her choice if these guys manage to get in.

I think there are "different" rapes. If a teenage girl gets pregnant by her teenage boy-friend (and how many instances of that have we all heard) in many states the boy is guilty of statutory rape. Yet how many times is he prosecuted - particularly when the girl claims to loves the "offender"? The law and its subsequent interpretation of what constitutes rape is the issue.

Isn't it just amazing how the GOP jumped on the "separation of church and state" bandwagon when the new Healthcare program included requiring coverage of birth control for employees of church owned businesses BUT this same GOP thinks they have the right to legislate when personhood begins AND how a woman's body can keep from getting pregnant. If this incursion of government on a moral/ religious question is not state-mandated religious belief, I do not know what is!
Those who do not believe in abortion DO NOT HAVE TO HAVE ONE. While I will not share my personal beliefs here, I honor and recognize others' rights to their own opinions. The GOP does not.
Once again, the good old boys he-man-woman-haters definitely do show their true colors. When Akins said he misspoke ONE WORD. Bull. His whole statement was offensive, chauvinist, and downright vicious. His reference to "legitimate rape" means he again blames the woman. For getting raped. For getting pregnant.

America is about 51% women. I can't believe these guys don't just get destroyed at election time.

Ladies, I'm sorry but it's been almost a century of sufferage, why can't at least all of you plus at least a few of us get out and make sure that none of these cavemen are ever elected? I don't live in Missouri, but I bet about 50% of voters are women.
05:03 PM on 08/22/2012
The Republicans are freaking out not because this man misspoke or misused a single word in a single sentence, or whatever his original description was, but because he has put on view the real thinking behind their legislation and their real intentions AND their feelings about women. Regardless of your stance on abortion, it comes down to one question: who gets to make that decision...a woman or the government?

The unfortunate thing for the GOP is that Akin also exposes the real views of Paul Ryan, his legislative co-sponsor, and no amount of hiding behind Romney-Ryan vagueness changes that.

I don't understand why they are even freaking out about Atkins views. The republicans expressed those views loudly during their primaries, not to mention all their efforts to defund planned parenthood. I think they are upset because they wanted to focus only on the issue of the economy, and not have the focus on women's reproductive issues at this time. Remember, there is no war on women.

Belief in Romney and the GOP platform takes faith, lots of it. So, it's no wonder they cater to the religious right by doubling down against birth control and abortion, as well as promoting abstinence-only education and putting God back in schools to counter the pseudo-science of biology, evolution and global warming. Good luck with that. Thankfully, even some of the faithful are losing "trust" and starting to leave the party, including the Elderly, the Poor (and newly or almost poor), the Hispanics, and now Women. Get ready for a barrage of hateful, last-ditch attack ads, but don't believe.

The Republicans stand on a platform that officially cherishes the sanctity of life. That sanctity diminishes depending upon the social and economic circumstances of that life when it pops out of the womb. It completely disappears when that life reaches the age to be cannon fodder in their unnecessary wars.

I would go a step farther. That sanctity completely disappears while the fetus is still in-utero, so long as the woman whose uterus is being used has chosen not to have an abortion. You can tell this by the fact that they are not standing up for pregnant women to get the very very best prenatal care that money can buy!

Did it occur to you that their obsession with this issue is the result of their anger towards women who engage in recreational/premarital sex. It's like they want to punish them and make them suffer. You notice that they don't offer any help with medical bills for these children, nor do they offer any help with affordable daycare to enable the women to work. At the same time time they want to cut benefits. It's a punishment thing, and a control thing. If they truly believed in the sanctity of life, they would be in favor of universal affordable healthcare...but they are against it.

Very well said. Faved. I wonder too, what they would say if one of the babies they defended ended up back in the hospital after they were born, and what if that child had no health insurance? When the republican debates were going on, many were clear that they cared little about the uninsured. But quite honestly, these babies they want to save today, they don't care a dime about tomorrow. When they cheered "let them die" during the debates, how did they know it wasn't a two week old baby who was the patient?
12:53 PM on 08/22/2012
Nancy Keenan: Don't be such a fool to believe anything you wrote. Keep trying to distract voters from the real issues; that is the economy and jobs; which this administration has been such a dismal failure. We all know you want to talk about anything but the economy and jobs. What kind of fool are you?
What's wrong with wanting babies to live and enjoy their life, liberty, and their pursuit of happiness?
The fact is our constitution does not guarantee reproductive rights for anyone.
No doubt that Akin had a 'foot in mouth' moment and should bow out. He does not represent the majority of GOP'ers. He spoke his opinion, and, if he stays in the race; he handed poor old phoney blonde Claire her Senate seat. Her Senate voting record is more offensive than Akin's remarks, as bad as they are. Missourians deserve better from both parties.
05:06 PM on 08/22/2012
I don't think this subject is foolishness, particularly not when you consider the array of new laws and proposed laws that affect women in the deepest and most personal of ways. I, too, am concerned about the economy, but people can contemplate more than one issue at a time.

And Akin DOES represent the ideology force behind the Republican party, including the Tea Party folks who have asserted themselves in the House and set the platform for the GOP.

I'm sorry, but the election of senior policy makers who believe something as spectacularly ignorant as the idea that women's bodies don't get pregnant from 'legitimate' rape is a problem as important as any of those.

If our legislators can remain stubbornly ignorant to such obvious foolishness, how can they make a jobs plan or a responsible budget? No one that ignorance can be trusted in government. Or with children.
08:24 PM on 08/22/2012
LawTalkingGuy: I agree Akin should step aside. He just handed Claire the election on a silver platter. History shows that women don't always get pregnant when raped. Some do and some don't. But Akin should have stated his position better. He only stated an opinion. He did not break the law. He's just stupid, just like poor old phoney blonde Claire.
But my comment that, as offensive as Akin's comments were, Claire's voting record in the Senate is pathetic. Missourians should not be required to have either candidate represent them in the Senate.
Nor should we have government officials thinking there are 57 states. Nor should we have representatives breaking the law sending lewd pictures of themselves. How many lies did we hear; and how many days did it take to get rid of the creep? Akin has a few days to go, before he steps down, and he will eventually step down.

Faved. The man who knows how it feels to birth a baby, is the one I'll hear regarding birth control and pregnancy issues. Meaning, I don't listen to them at all on these subjects.
12:29 PM on 08/22/2012
Hey, they don't believe in contraception or abortion. But then once you have the child, they don't believe in welfare or any social safety net. And lets make sure that anyone suffering from drug addiction can never recieve any help of any kind. If we leave this country in their hands, they'd be happy having people starve in the streets. But if it's their kid, they will secretly fly them out to Europe or Canada for a procedure. Their coke addled children quietly get sent to treatment centers. They are truly unbelievable and heartless. They want this to be a "Christian" nation, but they ignore the most basic of Christian values, taking care of those who are less fortunate. I know alot of people who would vote for these guys if they would abandon the anti woman, anti immigrant, anti gay, anti poor, anti just about everything social conservative positions that they seem to be doubling down on. Hopefully they will be sent a strong message in Nov.

Stefano: Just how illogical, irresponsible, and stupid are you? How can someone with a liberal mentality know anything about what others are thinking or doing. You're all in a world of your own.
For your information, the most basic Christian value is to accept Jesus Christ as your personal Lord and Savior through repentance of sins. When that is accomplished we help individuals, one on one, not by government mandate. That is the way Jesus did it, one on one!
Why should Christians tolerate of sin? We should not, and we should repulse sin where ever possible. That's what Jesus did!
Stop trying to get Christians to accept sin. It will not work, and you will lose in the end!
02:47 PM on 08/22/2012
How Christian of you, calling people stupid from behind your computer.  What does accepting Jesus mean if you don't follow his example.  No one wants you to accept sin, nor would I try to change your mind on abortion.  From my upbringing, compassion and empathy were preached every Sunday, something many of us "in our own world" liberals find lacking on your side.  My point was that for conservatives to use God as their marketing tool and then to turn around and preach hate and intolerance is sin.  "Whatever you do to the least of my brothers..."
