A time comes when we have to put our energy into the basics, the simple things, and let go of excess. Life as we know it has become complex and we need to make the time to pull back and focus on what we know for sure, what do we really want? What do we know that we don't want? These are simple questions that will help answer bigger questions down the road.

The concept of living a simple life is not new. Early Christians advised followers to let go of what they didn't need and live a simple life devoted to others. Buddhists encouraged followers to let go of desire and seek nothing more than essentials to live. St. Francis of Assisi embodied simplicity and demonstrated by example that true joy isn't found in money or material goods, but in giving freely to others and living with less.

In modern times, the pursuit of the material over the simple has driven many to the edge of excess, living beyond their means, accumulating things they don't need, buying things they can't afford. It is no surprise then that so many on this lifestyle path end up feeling tired, empty and discontented. The incessant drive for happiness, status and self-worth via outside means is merely a reflection of the emptiness within. They are starving and yet do not know it. The very life they are trying to glorify is of no benefit to them. In fact, it's a liability.

Now let's be clear, a certain level of productivity, aspiration or even ambition is required. After all, many things wouldn't get done if everyone sat around smelling the roses. But by learning the art of simplicity and applying it into our lives, the happiness and peace we gain trumps all worldly achievements and accolades.

Being on such a journey, we slowly come to see which part of our life needs simplifying -- whether it's the clutter in your mind, your bedroom, or a messy relationship -- the process of elimination is freeing, empowering even. When you clean the space around you, eliminate things you no longer need mentally and emotionally, you bring the energy of balance and peace into all areas of your life. And it feels good.

The simple life may mean different things to different people, but its very essence is to live day to day with only the things you need and be content with what you have. Focusing on simplicity in your day to day life helps the complex parts take care of itself.
