What's Funny About Occupy Wall Street?

This year I was on a national comedy tour with my crew Laughter Against the Machine. We set out to be like Doctors Without Borders with jokes. While we were on tour, Occupy Wall Street started. I'm not saying we caused it, just that no one will ever know. Maybe we were the vector that carried the virus, or like the butterfly flapping its wings in Indonesia can cause a tornado in Kansas. Just like that.

In the course of my travels, I've visited Occupy Wall Street sites in seven cities, and participated in numerous marches and mobilizations. The question I get asked most often is, "What's funny about Occupy Wall Street? Can the occupiers take a joke?"

The answer, without a doubt, is yes. While the posters and music of occupy are so vital and familiar in the movement, the rising of the 99% is inspiring comedy too. Here are some examples, wherein I examine the movement's big questions about unity, accessibility, violence, and of course, poop.

Hey Nato! Your set was awesome! You gotta vet those businesses to see if they're brick-worthy. Haha. Comedy can be an awesome activist tool.
