To me, however, from the next generation, it seemed so sad that how appearances and their struggles with authority plagued them so much. Their high school years just seemed to be extended into their college years.
Self-consciousness can prevent people from being who they are, expressing what they are feeling, doing what they want to do, and all because they are afraid of what other people will think or say about them.
A case in point is my own ugly phase. I think back to my least favorite first day in class back in the 1950s and how it all turned out. It reads funny now, but I really felt the pain. Perhaps it will ease someone else's.
