I wasn't surprised that Fatih won the title because I believe in the democratic system that exists in the US. What I found to be appalling are some of things that have been said since she won the title last week.
Arab attitudes one year after Cairo are both cautious and mature. They are neither unrealistically hopeful nor excessively deflated. They are still waiting for needed change and open to recognize it when it comes.
It wouldn't occur to Malkin to question an expression of pride on someone else's part in seeing someone of their own heritage accomplish some notable thing, unless that someone happens to be a black or even the stray Arab.
