Canada's negotiators are working hard to sidestep the issue of the country's growing greenhouse gas emissions from the oil and gas sector while simultaneously keeping quiet about the oilsands as nations come up with their "intended nationally determined contributions" in the global climate agreement.
If businesses adopt a circular paradigm that tracks the environmental impacts of their products throughout their entire lifecycles, we can help alleviate climate change and ensure we have enough natural resources to use in perpetuity.
Rather than placing a tax on health needs -- as income-based drug plans do -- Ontario should consider a more positive road to universal pharmacare. Specifically, it should consider tax financing a universal drug benefit program that would give non-seniors the same coverage elderly residents enjoy today.
So thank you Canada. No one elected me to speak for the Americans, but I decided to do it anyway. Thanks for being such a good neighbor! I am talking about the less public things for which we owe you thanks. You have a big heart. And you are generous. We and the world keep eating at your house. You really are so nice. Thanks for that!
The Pirate Bay is a popular website for the BitTorrent downloading of music, movies, games, software and much more. Swedish police raided the site by seizing its servers in Stockholm, allegedly in connection with violation of copyright law. The Pirate Bay shutdown isn't the first and likely won't be the last of its kind. Law enforcement agencies have been raiding the Pirate Bay service since 2006. The key challenge to pursuing consumers who share and download content in violation of copyrights is identifying them. Proposed solutions to this challenge pose serious privacy law concerns.
I am watching negotiators from impacted countries like the Philippines working earnestly on a new agreement to reduce global climate pollution. At the same time, I am reading stories back home about Prime Minister Stephen Harper telling the House of Commons yesterday that regulating greenhouse gas emissions from Canada's oil and gas sector would be "crazy." Let's be clear who is crazy here.
Twenty per cent of older adults live with a mental health issue. In Calgary alone, that equates to over 21,000 older adults, with between 1,000 and 2,000 living with severe and persistent psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia and delusional disorder. These figures do not take into account individuals between 45 and 65 who have lived a higher-risk lifestyle and been intermittently homeless. Such individuals age more quickly than the general population, and often present as "functionally geriatric" well before the age of 65.

In recent years, Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper has come under fire for disallowing scientists working for the Canadian government to speak directly to the press.
The short term problem is that Alberta has expensive oil which will make it challenging for all governments to achieve their fiscal goals. Revenues are down. Already we are seeing the incredible shrinking surplus of the Harper government. Medium term the market will right itself and business will pick up.

Recently ISIS released a video featuring former Canadian, 23-year-old John Maguire, now known as Abu Anwar Al-Canadi, demanding Muslim Canadians carry out terrorist attacks on Canadian soil. Though interpretations of religion which fail to uphold universal human rights legitimize ISIS ideologies for men like Maguire, not all Canadian adherents of conservative interpretations of Islam wish to live in a violent dictatorship, bound by the most rigid shariah law. If you are a Canadian Muslim, considering joining ISIS, here are a list of sins you will commit if you do.
I stand in solidarity with the people of Ferguson, New York and all over the world who are experiencing police violence. I encourage those of us who are committed to dismantling structural violence against black people that as we chant the slogan "Black Lives Matter", we must also remember "Black Lives Matter Everywhere". Let us not limit our desire for structural changes to only the United States.
This week I got to take a mind-blowing journey to breathtaking British Columbia, Canada, without ever leaving where I live in New York City.
Béliveau was much admired for his fidelity -- to his team, to the church, and to his family.
Béliveau was that rare thing -- an athlete who could comfortably rub shoulders with the mucky mucks, the Desmarais' of Power Corporation, the Gillettes and Molsons who owned the team.
