These gentrified zones that we tend to migrate to as an "escape" don't need us as much as they need the incomes associated with us. However, there are cities and neighborhoods across this country that are desperate for the presence of strong and successful men and women of color.
Neither public servants nor clergy nor holy books nor heroes are infallible. Battling obscurantism does not mean we are saints of any kind. It means we will not accept a tyrant's bogus paradise, and are free to form our own words and images and make up our own minds.
The idea behind the respectability politics of our day is that in order to not be oppressed, discriminated against, victimized or treated harshly by others, it is the responsibility of the oppressed group to "act good."
