Among the typical news stories this morning (the Duchess of Cambridge's first speech, Chanel's new ads, swimsuit model gets busted for meth ring -- you know, regular stuff), this headline popped out at us: "Elle Macpherson is a socialist."

Fox News, among others, highlighted a recent interview given by the veteran model to jockey Howard Stern. In the course of their chat, which aired last week, Stern asked the Australian-born, UK-dwelling Macpherson for her thoughts on President Obama:

Howard: Who should be the next President of the United States, Elle MacPherson? Go ahead.

Elle: I think Obama's going to do it.

Howard: You like Obama?

Elle: Yeah, I'm living in London and I'm socialist. What do you expect?

Howard: And you're living in London and you sense what other foreigners feel. Do they like him?

Elle: I think foreigners like him. He's very popular.

Howard: And don't we look good having a black president and everything? Makes us kind of cool?

Elle: I think it's more about his policy. But you know there are I understand that there are a lot of people who don't, you know, don't want change. "We want change. We want change." And he says, "I'll implement change," and you go, "Oh, actually, I don't really feel like I want change. It's too difficult."

While voicing support for Obama is nothing new for a fashion-type like Elle, the frank "I'm socialist" isn't something you hear every day.

But her candid political opinions place her in a growing category of fashion professionals -- models, designers and editors -- who have thrown their support behind political candidates and causes. Below, see our roundup of the well-known (Anna Wintour) and the lesser-known (Christie Brinkley) style stars who have thrown their chic hats into the political conversation.

And, if you're into listening to Howard Stern practically drool on his mike talking to Elle, click on the video below to hear the interview (discussion of Obama at 4:40).

On Tuesday night, the highly anticipated show 'Fashion Star' aired on NBC. Nicole Richie, John Varvatos and a now-very pregnant Jessica Simpson serve as "mentors" on the Elle Macpherson-hosted show to fourteen designer wannabes who compete to have their clothing available for purchase the following day at Macy's, H&M or Saks Fifth Avenue.

An unlikely, yet charming group of mentors, each offers the contestants a wide range of support. "I think the combination of all of us, because we’re all so different, it was a great time," Richie, whose House of Harlow and Winter Kate lines have been successes (even Courtney Love owns one of her dresses), said at the show's premiere party at Macy's Herald Square location. "I think that especially for people that are presenting their collections for the first time in these big stores, it is important to get as many opinions and views as possible in order to get them to the best versions of themselves."

Here are three more things we learned last night:

1. Nicole channels her dad Lionel Richie on the show.
Richie was full of wise advice, "My father has always encouraged me to stay true to myself and not really focus on the outside world when you’re creating," she said. "And I think that’s a great piece of advice and that’s something that I have been talking to the designers about when you’re being creative to just be creative and when you’re meeting with buyers to kind of put that aside and switch gears and listen to the buyers. It’s an interesting balance, but it’s necessary if you’re going to last in this industry."

2. John Varvatos has a few fashion crushes on the show.
Although Nicole Richie wouldn't discuss Jessica Simpson's baby shower or plans for motherhood, John Varvatos was much more candid, revealing, "I opened up the door and there was a NY Post laying on the ground and it was Jessica with the pictures from Elle and she looked amazing, right? I picked it up and immediately I emailed her, 'I just woke up to the most gorgeous sight - you, naked on the cover of the NY Post.'"

Simpson wasn't Varvatos' only crush on the show; lingerie-designing host Elle Macpherson caught his eye as well. "I would sit there on stage," Varvatos recalled, "and Nicole would punch me and I'd be like, 'that's why they call her a supermodel."

3. Elle Macpherson hasn't really aged- and here's how.
It's no surprise Varvatos was stunned by Macpherson's beauty, the Australian stunner, who attended the show's premiere at Macy's Herald Square in a black fringed mini-dress, hasn't aged a bit. What's her secret? "Age-defying makeup from Revlon. That’s what I use and I swear by it." Of course, the 47-year-old who has modeled for the brand, also recommends a healthy diet and exercise. "I’m not so interested in staying in shape," she explains, "I'm more about being well and healthy and having fun. I do sports, I’m a jock. I ski, I water ski, I paddle-board, and I do it because I love to be in nature, I love to be outdoors, I love my life. It’s not about agonizing in front of the mirror and going, 'How many pounds do I weigh? What does my silhouette look like? How do I look in those clothes?'"

What did you think of the first episode? Will you tune in for more of Richie, Varvatos, Simpson and Macpherson?

Start brainstorming your wooing plans, Australian gentlemen: super-hottie Elle Macpherson is back on the market.

Macpherson, 47, has called it quits with Jeff Soffer, her real-estate developer boyfriend of two years, the Australian Telegraph reports.

Macpherson and Soffer had been together for two years, but a source told the Daily Mail that the couple eventually shifted priorities:

"They were dating but it was rather on and off," a friend told MoS.

"She used to visit Jeff in Miami but they didn’t spend Christmas together - she went home to Australia instead. She was due to go to an art festival in December with him but cancelled."

Macpherson also has two sons with her former fiance Arpad Busson: Arpad Flynn, 14, and Aurelius Cy, 9. She was previously married to photographer Gilles Bensimon from 1986 to 1989.

But we doubt Elle will be taking too much time to wallow: along with hosting "Britain and Ireland's Top Model," Macpherson will be hosting the upcoming NBC show "Fashion Star."

Talk about an American takeover.

Whitney Port and Tyson Beckford will go from reality stars to reality judges, as they have just signed on to judge "Britain and Ireland's Next Top Model," replacing the outgoing Grace Woodward and Charley Speed.

The news broke earlier this week when Port blogged about her excitement for her new role:

"I'm so excited to finally be able to share some very exciting news with you. I will be joining Elle Macpherson, Julien Macdonald and Tyson Beckford as a judge on Britain & Ireland's Next Top Model! I'm thrilled about this new opportunity in my career and I am honored to have been asked to work alongside industry icons who I truly respect and admire."

For many, this comes as a surprise, as it was rumored "E!'s Fashion Police" member Kelly Osbourne would be the newest judge.

But host Elle Macpherson said Port and Beckford are a perfect match for the show, which will going into its 8th season this summer:

"We knew that Whitney and Tyson would brilliantly complement the show's aspirations and style. It was incredibly important for us, when choosing our new team members, that they shone with charisma and success and would mentor our girls with their personal experience and wisdom."

As you know, neither of these Americans are new to reality shows or fashion. Port became famous for her stints on "The Hills" and "The City" while working at Teen Vogue and Diane Von Furstenberg. Port also has her own fashion line Whitney EVE. And Beckford is best known for his work as a model and host of "Make Me A Supermodel." Beckford was also a guest judge on the show last season.

We're not sure what to make of this, but we can't wait to find out. What do you think of this American invasion?

When Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars in 2011, all eyes were on her dresses. With eight different outfit changes (each one chosen by Rachel Zoe), she had to hit a fashion high note again and again.

Some were hits -- nearly all viewers approved of the stunning maroon Versace number and no one could argue with the adorable Lanvin tuxedo.

But most everyone took issue with Anne's gray, high-necked Tom Ford gown, which viewers thought of as underwhelming, unflattering or simply unattractive.

So it was quite brave of Elle Macpherson to try the much-maligned dress on Wednesday night. The Aussie model attended the National Television Awards 2012 in London wearing the gray Tom Ford frock, accenting the bejeweled look with a dramatic braid-meets-ponytail hairstyle.

The dress didn't great reviews the first time -- how does it fare the second time around? And, of course: who wore it better?

How to Break 10 New Year's Resolutions Immediately Solely by Watching TV

Hulu.com   |   January 12, 2012    3:25 PM ET

The New Year's resolution might be society's most useless invention since the appearance of those tiny chairs for your cell phone to sit on. They're made to be broken. They've become a joke. In 2011, TIME Magazine compiled an illuminating list entitled "Top Commonly Broken New Year's Resolutions." Unsurprisingly, this list would be exactly the same if it was called "Top New Year's Resolutions." People all over the world are already hitting snooze on their commitments.

So consider swapping your resolution this year to something that you know that you can stick to, something that you are hard-wired as a person living in the 21st century to be great at doing. This spring, watch a whole lot of TV. Here's a guide to replacing TIME's most commonly broken resolutions with a TV show that will happily fill the time you were going to spend waiting in line for the treadmill or half-heartedly learning Spanish. A few of these shows might even inadvertently inch you closer to your goal. Others may cure you of the desire to better yourself in the first place -- problem solved.

Commonly Broken Resolution #1 -- Lose Weight and Get Fit

Luckily for you and your favorite pair of sweatpants, NBC's The Biggest Loser is back with Season 13. This time there's a twist, and it doesn't involve screams, threats, or treadmills made of chocolate cake. The season premiere saw the contestants arrive in familial teams of two, eager to change their lives together and deliver sentimental speeches that make viewers everywhere take their hands out of Cheetos bags to wipe away tears. But the contestants soon discover that they will be forced to compete against their loved ones for the prize. Clearly, somebody at NBC has been watching The Bachelor Pad.

If watching this earnest, adorable bunch struggle for their lives against all odds doesn't get you to scoot down slightly on your couch and attempt some crunches, we give up on you.

Commonly Broken Resolution #2 -- Quit Smoking

You should actually try to quit, if only because it will probably soon be legal for people to pepper spray you in the face for smoking next to their children. In the meantime, try smoking vicariously. Mad Men returns to AMC in March with as many cigarettes as the inside of an Air France flight in the 1970s, and reminding us once again why our grandparents hated each other. In Mad Men, the lighting of a cigarette is always symbolic -- usually of lust, dissatisfaction or intimidation. For you, it could symbolize the necessity to leave chain smoking to the days when men made all their important decisions while drunk and women had to quietly suffer the shocking, pervasive, constant oppression of shoulder pads.

Commonly Broken Resolution #3 -- Learn Something New

If the networks have anything to do with it, we'll all be sewing cocktail dresses out of garbage bags and quoting ageing supermodels by the summer. There will be so many fashion reality shows on air this year that you would have to try really hard to make it to 2013 without learning how to properly accessorize a safari-inspired pantsuit. Bravo was up first on January 2nd with The Rachel Zoe Project spin-off It's a Brad, Brad World, followed quickly by Lifetime's Project Runway All Stars. Lifetime is also introducing 24 Hour Catwalk, and you'll have to wait until March for NBC's Fashion Star, featuring Elle Macpherson. If reality rubs you the wrong way, check out ABC's Jane by Design, a teen comedy taking its cue from Ugly Betty and The Devil Wears Prada. The show also ushers Andie MacDowell out of our fond memories of the '90s and back into the spotlight.

Commonly Broken Resolution #4 -- Eat Healthier and Diet

Try to stuff your face with cookies while watching a shirtless man slice into a freeze-dried Chihuahua while the decapitated head of a grizzly bear observes. Just try. Animal Planet's American Stuffers, a new reality show about a rural taxidermy shop, is sure to erase any hunger pangs you might have. If even doggie dissection doesn't cure your munchies, Fear Factor is finally back on NBC. On this infamously icky show, scantily clad, attractive people put the most repulsive things you can think of into their mouths.

Gear up your gag reflex for a long, stomach-churning season.

Commonly Broken Resolution #5 -- Get Out of Debt and Save Money

You're already on the right track here by choosing to stay home and watch TV instead of spending money making yourself a better person. Beef up on your money-making savvy by tuning into Showtime's House of Lies, a show about a group of management consultants who stop at nothing to get business deals done. Aside from learning how to be a cutthroat money maker, you'll also get to enjoy the stellar cast -- Don Cheadle, Kristen Bell and Ben Schwartz (known to you as Parks and Recreation's Jean-Ralphio) star. Pair this promising drama with CMT's Bayou Billionaires, a Beverly Hillbillies-esque reality show that follows a formerly poor family who just found out their home sits on the fourth largest deposit of natural gas in the country, causing them to promptly lose their minds and start buying everything they see. You might lose your taste for big spending when you see how silly it looks.

Commonly Broken Resolution # 6 -- Spend More Time With Family.

Look, if you have to artificially force yourself to hang out with your family, either they are pretty painful to be around, or you need to be reminded of their good qualities. Or you are a Kardashian. If you really can't stand them, we suggest spending more time with America's Modern Family instead, and joining the Dunphys in their adorable shenanigans. Phil and Claire may bicker, deceive, and feud every week, but unlike your actual family, they always come together for a warm-hearted, loving reconciliation at the end of each episode.

Or maybe you just need a little push to realize that your own family isn't all bad. If that's the case, tune into ABC's Celebrity Wife Swap, featuring everyone who didn't make it onto Dancing With The Stars. If watching Gary Busey's wife try to lead a bible study at Ted Haggard's home doesn't make you want to bear hug your whole family, we don't know what will.

Commonly Broken Resolution #7 -- Travel to New Places

Watching IFC's Portlandia, which is back with a second season this month, will eliminate your need to visit Portland, Oregon.

Seriously, check it off your list. Put a pin in the map.

We're calling this a comedy, but it may as well be an anthropological case study. As Portlandia exposes, things that would make you a pariah anywhere else make you cool in Portland. Unemployment is a badge of honor, thick glasses are sexy and wearing clothes and eating food out of the trash is preferable. Fred Armisen of Saturday Night Live and Carrie Brownstein of indie rock's Sleater-Kinney fame capture the understated, endearing insanity of Portland inhabitants by playing a wacky mélange of characters that encapsulate the little city's lazy, boozey, peculiar reputation. Carrie and Fred poke fun at Portlandians, but underneath it all there's a deep affection for Bridgetown's eco-crazed, caffeinated, tattooed natives. If you end up wanting to visit after all, pack your best flannel, grow out your chin beard, learn to ride a unicycle and brush up on what's cool with Portlandia's promising second season, which kicks off with an Allergy Pride Parade and a creepy Jeff Goldblum cameo.

Commonly Broken Resolution #8 -- Be Less Stressed

This one is easy. Laugh your stress away with HBO's new Australian comedy Angry Boys, featuring cult-favorite comedian Chris Lilley, who has been cracking up dorm rooms with his mockumentary series Summer Heights High since 2007. Lilley is once again playing multiple characters (this time doubling the number to six) including an American rapper, a manipulative Japanese mother, and a champion surfer. You'll be laughing so hard that you'll forget to obsessively reorganize your to-do list -- we promise.

Commonly Broken Resolution #9 -- Volunteer

You have the power, and you can use it for good. In 2012, make a real effort to swap the shows you feel like you need to hide from your spouse for quality shows with good writing, talented actors and no scenes featuring wealthy people ignoring their Pomeranians. These shows might demand that you follow more than one plotline and dust off your SAT words, but it will be worth it when you've contributed to the cause of keeping classy TV on the air. We're excited about HBO's Lucky, a drama featuring Dustin Hoffman and the shady business of horse racing, and Fox's Touch, where Kiefer Sutherland plays a widower raising a genius son with strange visionary abilities. Don't you feel better already? Test your new resolve by not clicking on this:

Commonly Broken Resolution #10 -- Drink Less

Those of you who waited until you were alone to guiltily cue up this season's premiere of The Bachelor might have noticed that producers turned up the crazy a few notches. Ben Flajnik, this season's floppy-haired Bachelor, is a Napa Valley winemaker, which might explain why the 25 heavily-made up hopefuls were chugging the stuff like it was their last sorority mixer. The booze undoubtedly helped make this one of the most eventful first cocktail parties in the show's history -- Monica, a dental consultant from Salt Lake City, spent most of the party hitting on another contestant, and Jenna, a high-strung blogger from New York, disintegrated into tears for most of the evening. But it was the tear-soaked preview of the rest of the season that made us want to pour our wine glasses into the sink.

From the looks of it, tuning into The Bachelor this season might cure you of the urge to ever make another tipsy, tearful confession.

So what are you waiting for? You now have permission to take all your good intentions for 2012, pack them away with your unopened Portuguese Rosetta Stone and barely-used running shoes, and pick up your shame remote.

Elle Macpherson has all sorts of explanations as to why she's still so gorgeous and fit after all these years.

The 47-year-old former model once told Elle UK that she aims to "eat organic, locally sourced food wherever possible. I don't like to have chemicals in my body at all, so I don't drink, smoke or take drugs, not even Aspirin."

It could also be the copious amounts of water she drinks: "I challenge any woman to drink 3 litres water everyday for a month and sleep for seven hours a night, that she won't lose weight, look better and feel better," said Macpherson. Sure, we'll try that.

But now we know the real secret: surfing. The Aussie native hit the waves at Byron Bay while on holiday with her family, including sons Arpad and Aurelius and her father, Peter.

But as conscientious as Elle is about healthy and body, she seemed to have missed the memo about tanning. While surfing, Macpherson's high-cut black bathing suit revealed some awkward tan lines at the tops of her thighs, clearly the result of some bikini tanning earlier in the day.

Hey Elle, maybe add some sunscreen to that extensive beauty routine?

Take a look at the Australian beauty.

LONDON — Elle Macpherson fired her business adviser for leaking secrets when journalists were actually getting juicy details about the supermodel by hacking into her phone, the former aide told a British inquiry into media ethics Tuesday.

In testimony that illuminated the human costs of the illegal practice, Mary-Ellen Field described how she lost both her job for Macpherson and one at an advisory firm because of the unfounded suspicions – a double-blow that was all the more serious because she was in poor health.

Supermodel Without Makeup!

Jessica Misener   |   November 18, 2011   11:52 AM ET

We're used to seeing supermodel Elle Macpherson all glammed up, but Elle recently hit the streets of London sans fards.

The gorgeous 47-year-old model and spokesperson was spotted fresh-faced in boots and a cardigan, rocking a more casual look than her latest -- and we think, questionable -- all-black fashion choices: a dress with crazy puffy sleeves, and a bell-bottomed suit.

We love that Elle is a fan of natural beauty; she usually keeps her makeup sparse, like when she wore those famous liquid leggings, and she previously posed for Louis Vuitton's photo gallery of its runway walkers with bare faces last fall.

Check out the photo of barefaced Elle below, and click through our slideshow of other celebs without makeup.

How big is too big... when it comes to bell bottoms?

Elle Macpherson begged the question when she stepped out today in London. The 47-year-old model (seriously -- 47!) was at Selfridges to fete the tenth anniversary of her bra and panty line, Elle Macpherson Intimates, and did so in a bold way.

Opting for a chic, trim black jacket in top, Elle was wearing some super-wide bell bottoms whose bottoms nearly swept the floor.

Although the Aussie model-mom has been playing with proportion lately, we were still surprised to see such oversized trousers from the woman who typically dons skintight PVC pants.

But if anyone can pull off such dramatic bottoms, it would be a a six foot tall woman with a 25-inch waist (yup, we Googled those dimensions).

On another note, can you believe that there is a celebrity clothing/lingerie/beauty line that has managed to last for ten whole years?
