A new study in the American Journal of Political Science reveals that people find the smell of others with similar political opinions to be attractive, suggesting that one of the reasons why so many spouses share similar political views is because they were initially and subconsciously attracted to each other's body odor.
What will it be like to be a 70, 80, 90, 100-year-old woman in the future? Let's imagine 'Nina' in decades ahead. Nina, whose husband died three years ago, lives in her own one-story home, in a pleasant intergenerational community, having made the decision to 'age in place.' Her house is close to the village center where she's on a first name basis with the merchants in all the shops.
When I was growing up, I was sent to bed by 9 or 10 p.m., after a couple of hours of primetime television. But had I missed my bedtime, I would have noticed that TV (which at the time had but three major networks and maybe one or two local channels) also went to bed early, generally around 1 or 2 a.m.
Everyone we know is going to give us advice and tell us what they think we should do, and what will be right for us. As tempting as it is to take the advice, it will likely completely screw us up. Dare to look the gift horses in the mouth: their well-intentioned sympathy may also mask their own fears that they are themselves only one step away from our scary situation.
We are often smart, accomplished, and in other areas of our lives, self-confident. So what is it that happens when we are face-to-face with a man with whom we feel a deep attraction? In many cases, we become someone we believe that man wants, rather than who we are. What is it that has us abandon ourselves and create something artificial?
There was a time when it was considered inappropriate to discuss sex and sexual anxieties. Certainly, what you got up to in the bedroom was nobody's business but your own. You would probably rather have all your teeth removed with no anaesthetic, than admit to a complete stranger that your sex life had dried up.
I frequently feel like I'm channeling Miss Clara. Bad manners abound. Men who won't allow a woman to exit an elevator first. Cars that honk after waiting less than a second at a light that just changed. People cracking their gum so loudly it sounds like a trip to the gun range. And don't get me started about talking in a movie theater.
