Friday Talking Points

Friday Talking Points -- Helium Brains

Chris Weigant | Posted 06.26.2013 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Congress just voted overwhelmingly to continue the national helium reserve in the panhandle of Texas. This is a holdover from World War I. Which Congress has never, ever been able to get rid of, for the obvious reason that it is not necessary in the slightest anymore.

Friday Talking Points -- Don Young Shows GOP How Not To Reach Out To Minorities

Chris Weigant | Posted 05.29.2013 | Politics
Chris Weigant

While it certainly was (quoting the Flintstones theme) a "gay old time" in Washington this week, I have already spent the whole week on the subject, so I'm really only going to mention it in passing.

Friday Talking Points -- Filibusted

Chris Weigant | Posted 04.17.2013 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Our Most Impressive Democrat Of The Week was Representative Zoe Lofgren, who (with a Republican co-sponsor) this week introduced legislation to regulate the use of drones for domestic police work.

Talking to Our Children About Tragedy: Fostering Safety, Not Fear

Tamar Chansky | Posted 02.16.2013 | Parents
Tamar Chansky

When talking with our children about tragedy, we can choose to emphasize grief and healing rather than fear and danger. Our purpose is to help our children recover and be resilient, not to be frightened of their lives.

Friday Talking Points -- Merry Cliffmas!

Chris Weigant | Posted 02.14.2013 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Here is our 238th installment of valiantly attempting to get Democrats to occasionally speak with one voice, and not get lost in the weeds of rhetoric.

Friday Talking Points -- The Can-Kicking Congress

Chris Weigant | Posted 01.16.2013 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Every member of Congress began this year knowing what was going to happen at the end of 2012. They have now had over ten months to work on the impending crisis. And what have they done about it? Nothing.

Friday Talking Points -- Wake Me When It's Over

Chris Weigant | Posted 01.23.2014 | Politics
Chris Weigant

I would support making it illegal to complain about politics -- any politics, from any viewpoint or party, including criticizing any politician -- unless you can prove you voted in the last election.

Friday Talking Points -- Smile, Mitt, You're on Candid Camera!

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.21.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

When Mitt is releasing tax returns to change the subject, you just know he's in a bad place politically. It may still be way too early to confidently predict the outcome of the election, but it isn't too early to call Romney's campaign (so far) an unmitigated disaster.

Friday Talking Points -- Convention Talking Points

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.14.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Defending free speech is easy when everyone agrees with the speech -- it's defending odious and reprehensible speech that is always the harder path. More on this subject next week.

Friday Talking Points -- Talking Back

Chris Weigant | Posted 10.31.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

The facts are squarely on the Democrats' side. But we need bumpersticker answers. Slogans. Not an in-depth discussion of why the other side's position is horsefeathers, but a snappy putdown to showcase the wrongness of the Republican position.

Friday Talking Points -- Scary Medicine

Chris Weigant | Posted 10.17.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Mitt Romney opened up several new lines of attack on his taxes this week -- such as labeling him "Mister Thirteen Percent" for his admitted tax rate. Even juicier is attacking what Mitt Romney would pay under Paul Ryan's budget plan.

Friday Talking Points -- 'A Tax' On Romney?

Chris Weigant | Posted 10.03.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Because of Mitt's refusal to release his tax returns, Democrats (and the media) are free to speculate all they wish on what Mitt is hiding. Harry Reid's was merely the most notable of such speculation, to date.

Friday Talking Points -- Another Sad Day

Chris Weigant | Posted 09.19.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

We're not going to have our normal partisan talking points today. We're going to follow the lead set by Barack Obama and Mitt Romney, and we're just not going to go there today.

Friday Talking Points -- A Look Back

Chris Weigant | Posted 05.02.2012 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Welcome to the 200th Friday Talking Points! Because of this occasion, we are going to take a look backwards at our history. So, if you're looking for an update on what is going on in the political world, you'll have to wait until next week. Sorry.

Friday Talking Points -- Foreign Policy Issues Reappear

Chris Weigant | Posted 12.21.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

It has been a big week on the foreign policy front, with the death of Libya's dictator and President Obama's announcement today that all U.S. troops would be out of Iraq by the end of this year.

Friday Talking Points -- I Am A 99 Percenter

Chris Weigant | Posted 12.14.2011 | Politics

The Occupy Wall Street protest continues. So far, its staying power has surprised and enthused a large swath of America, and surprised and bemused mu...

Friday Talking Points -- Long Live Steve Jobs

Friday Talking Points -- What I'd Call "Class Warfare"

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.30.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Welcome back, everyone, to this week's edition of So You Think You Can President?!? Just to remind everyone, this year we've got the Republican field of candidates for the party's nomination.

Friday Talking Points -- Class Warfare? Hardly.

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.23.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

As was entirely predictable, once Obama stood up for taxing the rich folk a wee bit more, the Republicans fired back with what they think is the biggest weapon in their arsenal: screaming "Class warfare!"

Friday Talking Points -- Ads Obama Should Run

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.16.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

Obama should run a few ads right now which do not even mention the election. Instead of saying "vote for me!" these ads should say "pass my jobs bill" in as many creative ways as possible.

Friday Talking Points -- Give 'Em Hell, Barry!

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.09.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

President Barack Obama opened his re-election campaign last night with a wowzer of a speech to a joint session of Congress.

Friday Talking Points -- Labor Daze

Chris Weigant | Posted 11.02.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

It surpasses all irony and actually enters into the realm of bitter humor that we're about to celebrate Labor Day when the unemployment rate remains at the sky-high level of 9.1 percent.

Friday Talking Points -- Phony Vacation Outrage

Chris Weigant | Posted 10.19.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

President Obama is on vacation. This fact is being subject to ridicule from Republicans, and their enablers in the media. Which has prompted me to -- in the fashion of Bill Maher -- come up with a New Rule.

Friday Talking Points -- Corporations Are People, Mitt?

Chris Weigant | Posted 10.12.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: the Iowa straw poll is meaningless. The Republican debate last night in Iowa wasn't as meaningless, but will also soon be forgotten.

Friday Talking Points -- More Tea, Anyone?

Chris Weigant | Posted 10.05.2011 | Politics
Chris Weigant

With the conclusion of the debt ceiling "crisis," the media pivoted swiftly to their standard larger questions (to them, at any rate) about any politi...
